Am I in the Twilight Zone? People here ran "4 Minutes" through the trenches when it released, calling her a sell-out for following "Hung Up" with that single.
I guess after GMAYL is a hit, people will change their minds.

^Some may have selective memory, and then alter the past to make things convenient for the present. Happens all the time. Plus, it's been almost four years since "4 Minutes"- it's had time to sink in, grow on people. "Stronger" sure is looking- ahem, strong- to knock SFTTR (temporarily) out of the No. 1 slot.

I wouldn't call GMAYL a big hit just yet.
Relatively speaking, all her singles are hits just because of her fanbase.

I know people here were talking, it is a foregone conclusion that Madonna's lead single would shoot straight to #1 a week or so ago.
What are people's thoughts now?

Having never believed it would shoot in at No. 1, my thoughts remain the same. :)
Right on, spoilt- it will have three days of very nice airplay- but then we should see much lesser gains in the last four days of the seven-day cycle. And then who knows after that.
By the way- anyone know why All Access has not updated the Mediabase charts in a couple of days?

I, too, never expected a #1. But a nice top 10, and possible top 5, will be nice. :)

I will say this AirPlay start for M is WAAAAY better than I ever imagined. Sales, on the other hand, are lagging. Still not even top ten on iTunes.

I agree. 4 Minutes sounded a smash during the first listen. GAYL just doesnt. It just sucks, it is even worse than Beyonce's lead single Right, but whatever you think of that single at least it had an audacity and an identity. It may have been abrasive to some people but at least it was bold. It had a hardness and a swing behind its punch that even if not everybody liked, they remembered. Lovin' is just such a nothing. She's tried to please just about everybody and wound up pleasing nobody but the diehards. She's very luck she has the Super Bowl, or I'd actually guess that it wasn't going to make the iTunes top ten at all.

Keri Hilson could have easily sang "4 Minutes" as well. My disdain for that song knows no limits.

That's a very good start. Once again, I am amazed that it's the SALES component that is letting her down in the first 36 hours.

That's a very good start. Once again, I am amazed that it's the SALES component that is letting her down in the first 36 hours. I think that is due to the album. Many of the people rushing out to buy the single are going to want the album as well, and since the album just became available for pre-order, AND it comes with the single free to download now, the album sales are hurting the single sales quite badly. Bad planning on Interscope's part, for how well they planned things. They should have set the album pre-ordering for not the same time as now. Although I guess it will be there, #1 for post-Superbowl sales. So possibly good planning after all lol

^I'm pretty sure the single sales includes the pre-order GMAYL downloads.

^I'm pretty sure the single sales includes the pre-order GMAYL downloads. I think it might as well, since they charge for the single right away. But at the same time it doesn't count on the singles chart, which is affecting the stand-alone single's sales. It could have broken top 10 and maybe even gotten to #1.

Downloads from pre-oreder albums register on Soundscan charts as a single.
At the time the album is downloaded, the pre-order singles will be subtracted from the sales total and register as part of the album sale.

^I don't know if we know for sure that automatic downloads get applied to iTunes' Songs chart (though they do count toward Digital Songs). With the album pre-order No. 1, one would think that the ranking on the Songs chart would be higher than No. 12- unless absolutely no one is purchasing the single without pre-ordering (which is probably not likely, even if it isn't her best track).

So if 100,000 people pre-order the album, it will count as single sales + 100,000 for the single sales? For both Soundscan and the Hot 100 and its digital sales chart?
And then when the album comes out, the total will decrease by those 100,000? What about if I bought Poker Face 2 months ago, then complete the album now? It would lose that one single sale?
