Just thinkin... Madonna's biggest problem is her amazing back catalogue. She has a huge fanbase but on the other hand, her past recordings are so strong that it's impossible for GAYL to meet the expections.
There will be millions of people who'll dislike the song just because it's hers and not as good as her best stuff

At least it's better than "4 Minutes"- for me, anyhow. But, yes- she has set such a bar that even pleasant, fun tracks may not compare to her most classic material. A top 10 entry would be nice.

So Madonna's song will appear on the chart tomorrow that is posted each morning.
And in Detroit it's been on the top of the hour...it's just starting now again at 1pm...:) Listening at work...shhhhhh!

"4 Minutes" is way better! Airplay-wise, I think this will end up inbetween Hung Up and 4M. I think the You Da One comparison is potentially apt, although I don't think airplay will be quite that big right out of the gate.

I doubt it will debut at No. 1. Almost certainly not with the built up anticipation and the SB exposure sales split between two weeks, which was my point and many others'. =P

I also prefer 4M to GAYL. I sort of like the latter too though.

Oh, no, br- we will have to disagree on that one. :) And I don't see this track necessarily faring great on year-end lists- just as "4 Minutes' didn't. ;) But, press reaction have been pretty positive on the whole thus far.
Yes, the track should appear in the updates for tomorrow.

If Madonna's song was a smash, she definitely had a shot at debuting at #1 with all the SB hype. BUT...I just heard it and I don't think Kelly Clarkson has anything to worry bout.

^What does individual personal opinion have to do with the charts? Not that I'm saying the track will be No. 1 (I don't think so)... but there are plenty of tracks that have hit No. 1 that I don't like much at all- yet I know that others do. Just sayin'.

Madonna's song is pretty generic IMO. I wouldn't be surprised if it dissapeared in a couple of weeks. She can do much better.

Probably so, imbondz- the William Orbit tracks, especially, I'd think. She said the album was light (Solveig, couple others) and "dark" (Orbit).
On a non-M note, look at "Love on Top" nearing 30m audience. Probably won't reach its initial No. 20 Hot 100 peak, but nice to see it racking up additional weeks and climbing back up.

Why do people not like 4 Minutes? I found that it was quite a good dance track.

If she had a full week of airplay and digital sales, I'd say it's within reach but I don't think she can top the Hot 100 with 5 days of airplay and 3 days of sales. If I recall correctly, BTW was #1 on iTunes at this point and its airplay was monstrous, even compared to the so-far-great-start of GMAYL.

^It really shouldn't be- after all, it's a new single from an act whose first single was released almost 30 years ago. :)

Why is everyone comparing this to BTW? ??? Both were played on radio early Friday morning. Both were released to iTunes shortly thereafter. Both are songs from artists who have not had new music in a while. Both have a play every hour deal for radio, although Madonna's is more of an optional thing than BTW's was. Very, very, very similar situations, and BTW debuted at #1, so the comparisons are warranted.

I have seen BTW referred to as a comeback for Gaga and now as a song that was from an "artist who had not had new music in a while." Gaga never went anywhere, she had an album and then a very quick 2nd album/re-release and then the wait for BTW was NOT long especially when you consider the kind of recurrent airplay she got.

I was only referring to BTW in terms of release schedule, not expectations.
I don't think we can compare actual sales/airplay numbers between the two, but BTW does set up a good comparison for how week 1 & 2 may relate to each other when an anticipated single is released on a Friday.

I know it wasn't very long, but everyone made it seem like it was a really long time. It had been a little over a year since TFM was released, so it was a while, but still not a huge time.

I'd be happy if Madonna made the top ten. How many artists can say they've gone top 10 in four successive decades?

I'm sorry but Madonna wishes she had a single that was as reductive as BTW er um I mean Express Yourself '11 this time around. She'll get #1 regardless.

It was actually released to radio in April so peaked over the summer. Still, not a huge time, but still haha

I'm revising my predix - Madge will debut around 30-35 and then sneak out a top ten week after the Super Bowl, but not top 5. I'm gonna say 32 debut, 7 next week. Its iTunes sales are not climbing rapidly enough.

I think it will debut around #32 next week and then climb to #4 after the Superbowl effect

Kelly might still have something to worry about. It's not a given that she gets #1 next week, Adele is still in the running.

Why do people not like 4 Minutes? I found that it was quite a good dance track. Timbaland was getting very tired by that point, the farty synths are grating after a while and the lyrics make absolutely no sense.

4 Minutes was and still is the bomb. It had this epic feeling; a sense of swagger and momentousness. Give Me All Ur Luv or however it's spelt...doesn't.

I agree. 4 Minutes sounded a smash during the first listen. GAYL just doesnt. It just sucks, it is even worse than Beyonce's lead single
