And making sure everyone knows about it. ;) I actually don't hate Katy as a person, obviously--I don't know her at all. But, I do find her to be the most vapid, generic, here-for-fame-only pop star we've had in a while, and I'm not ashamed to admit the monstrous success of someone like that totally irks me. The whole idea of what her music has become feels cheap to me, but POM's success is probably the most legitimate she's had in a while--no remix, no slashed prices, no deals. Just great promo and a song people are, somehow, connecting to that's putting her in the lead in spite of some seriously huge competition. I find an Adele or Whitney Houston album to be nothing more than a boring, vapid & generic collection of assembly line ballads. All of their music sounds the same. Theres nothing different about it from one record to the next. Its recording the same song with the same few notes over and over again. Adele and Whitney are one dimensional artists. Theres nothing to it accept them doing the same thing over and over again. They don't have room to be experimental at all. If you've heard one song, you've heard them all. k.

Jesus, Billboard.. What happened while I was sleeping lol
Anyway, I think the rule change is good. It's been possible to re-enter the chart with re-releases and radio promotion so this is just the way forward. The times they are a-changing.

I think all this Katy Perry talk should be on next week's chart thread since that's the chart where it is in contention for #1 :)

Perhaps making people know about it would galvanize a larger crowd to buy it so more money could go to charity? :o Really? We never noticed. ;) Katy could give her heart to a dying child, and people would still accuse her of using it as promo. And danny, I totally respect your opinions on Katy, and everyone has the right to hate on whoever they don't like...but the constant attacking every time she releases something is so damn repititive(you don't do this...just saying in general). Between Katy's constant attacks and the huge amount of unwarranted hate on Beyonce, this board just isn't for me... Back on Topic: Very nice to see Madge, Nicki, and MIA in the top 10 :) Hope it goes higher.

This was the best decision. If an older song sells enough and has enough AirPlay to chart...it should be allowed to chart. These are supposed to be the most popular songs in the country and if the most popular song in the country is IWALY or AIWFCIY then they should be #1. It only makes sense.

You might want to forget about Mariah's Christmas song for now, that is a separate issue

Yes- no official word on whether holiday tracks will be eligible- right now, I'm thinking no. jback- it's unlikely that GMAYL will go higher. So just savor the top 10 placement. )

Holiday titles perform similarly each year- they're expected to perform a certain way- it's an annual thing. They already affect airplay for current tracks around the holidays and they would take up unnecessary space on the chart (even if it's just a handful of tracks).
Yes- that's another reason, 2m. Holiday titles weren't eligible for the Hot 100 for a number of years. That's why we didn't see tracks like "Merry Christmas Darling" or "Step Into Christmas" (which had commercial singles) chart on the Hot 100. Billboard had a Christmas Singles chart- and now it has a Holiday Hot 100.

Also, including christmas tracks would probably cause problems for decade end hot 100 charts.

We Belong Together or Vision of Love or other Mariah tracks have a better chance of recharting than All I Want For Christmas is You
For the simple reason that the latter is a Christmas song

Billboard Hot 100 "Give Me Everything" goes recurrent this week (from whatever defintion that word has now xD) after 45 weeks on the chart. Which wouldn't have happened without the new rules. But then again the song could come back next week, so it's not just a negative situation.

If there is "sufficient activity" to warrant a placement in the top 50
I doubt they would send a song to recurrent for falling to #51 and bring it back next week if it rises to #50

^Then it still isn't a "true top 50".

Anyone have that list of most weeks on the Hot 100? "Rolling In The Deep" is surely going to be in contention seeing as it will most likely be back in the top 10 in its 59th week on the chart.

Oof looks like I opened a can of worms with my "Katy Perry of all people" line.
I just want to clarify my comment -- whoever has the most points "deserves" the #1 and I don't think there's anything cheap about Katy's label's tactics here.
I just think that when the history books are written, it is going to look so odd that during the week Whitney Houston died and Adele swept the Grammys, they're both going to end up behind Katy Perry on the Hot 100. If you are a casual observer reading the music headlines, I don't think you'd ever guess that it would be Katy Perry to emerge at the top of the charts right now. I think even if you love Katy Perry you've got to admit she's not the big story this week.

She shouldn't have any problem getting into that top 3... 76 might be a challenge though.

Thanks for posting those here, ry4n. Note the tallies listed for "Like a Prayer" and "Vogue"- the digital-songs totals for them are 690K and 450K, respectively.

If you are a casual observer reading the music headlines, I don't think you'd ever guess that it would be Katy Perry to emerge at the top of the charts right now. But at the same time, when people are looking at the history charts that don't see "Billboard Publish Date 03/03/12" and say "oh that is reflecting the time after the Grammys on 02/12/12". They'll see "the grammys were on the 12th and the chart on Feb 11th has Set Fire To The Rain at #1, makes sense".

Katy Perry's new song and upcoming reissue is a big story too I think ...many magnitudes smaller than Adele/Whitney. This happens all the time though. Chart history is littered with moments where we look back and go, "really, that's what blocked ____ from #1?" I just always find it frustrating. I hold out the naive hope that the charts accurately reflect a moment in time, but sometimes they amplify or downplay things.

And I LOVE that! It's a sweet, sweet victory for her, Capitol, and all her fans. <3
