It's crazy to see 7 million certified....3 singles deep. I love that Adele herself isn't the one really doing the promo, it's us the fans and other artists. Who else could disappear for months and still have a #1 selling album and #1 single. Not one piece of promo. Especially in this age it's hard to see those type of numbers. We may say "Oh Taylor did it, Carrie did it, Mariah did it, Kelly did it," etc. What they had to endear was work. Each released around 4-5 singles and did huge tours just to reach the 6-7 million sold mark. This woman did it on 3 singles within a year span and still selling like it was released the week before. Insanity.

I don't recall Norah's album having more than 2 singles.

Norah had 4-5 singles though only 2 did anything. Norah's success a decade ago reminds me of Adele, actually. Of course, some differences-Adele has better performing singles while Norah was closer to the boom in album sales. But, similar amazing sales that come from seemingly nowhere in a lot of ways compared to the amount of work others put into their albums.

@ pressed as hell right now. You always have a negative for a positive post. It took Norah Jones 3 years to get a diamond cert. She also released 4 singles.

In the past 24 hours I've seen Katy Perry referred to as LEGENDERRY and LEGENDPERRY just posts apart. I find it incredibly annoying the way people on here will call anything with a vagina a legend too, but if any current artist deserves that title it's Adele. THIS

What both have in common and what makes them both blockbuster albums is they appeal to the standard top 40 music buying audience as well as the non-standard. More people interested means more people will buy

Thank you for putting some perspective into some of Pulse's biggest fans making simply ridiculous statements regarding their favourite artists. I, too, have seen some of those references to Katy Perry and have to just shake my head.....

The perfromance of one album does not make a "legend" anyway
It is more along the lines of how artists are remembered over time.
Can't do that current releases

I think one major difference between Norah and Adele (apart from Adele's huge singles success) is that Norah was marketed almost exclusively to adults. Adele seems to bridge the generation gap.

'Don't Know Why' was a mainstream radio hit, surely drawing out younger people It peaked at #32 on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart. It crossed over and got some minor airplay at Pop because her album was selling so well. That's very different from Adele two Pop #1's and a Pop #2. Adele is even getting played at Rhythmic- the "party" format. Her marketing isn't targeting one group- it's targeting pretty much everyone. She didn't crossover to young audiences, she started with them and older audiences simultaneously.

So you agree someone younger listened to it
Singles are not always the only draw to younger audiences.

I also hadn't realized that apparently "Come Away With Me" didn't chart at all! I wish they'd promote more of her singles to HAC/CHR; I feel like some of her singles from last era ("Chasing Pirates," "It's Gonna Be") would have had the opportunity to get HAC play, at least. Anyway...completely floored by Adele's continued success...no way in the world did I expect these sales. :O

Where are you guys seeing projections of up to 600k? I've seen it brought up in a few posts but all I see in the original post is "easily blow past 399k."

No, I don't think Norah Jones ever had a re-release, and that was 2003?

2002. I was also trying to research which albums have sold as much as her worldwide. The most recent ones that did 20 million+ were from 2002-Norah Jones and Eminem. So, it has basically been a decade since someone has done those numbers in the US and worldwide. Did Eminem have a re-release?
Plus, WOW Norah. I had no idea that she pounded over 20 million worldwide cds. I knew she went diamond in the US, but didn't know she also sold over 12 million everywhere else.

So is Norah a legend? If not, then neither is Adele or Katy Perry or Rihanna.

Interesting question. Norah sold so, so, so much but it really feels like she fell off the map in every way possible. I don't really see anyone saying she is a legend or loving her on top 100 female lists or anything. I feel like Alanis even gets more attention still and she only had one huge album as well. BUt people argue against Alanis being a legend as well. It isn't just sales that makes a legend and I guess it really depends. If you look at the chosen people who are accepted as legends not all of them had one hugely successful cd. On the flip side, some people who did have hugely successful cds or one cd are pretty much forgotten now. I suppose if I had to put my money down on someone I would put it on Adele as a good possibility of becoming a legend and it isn't entirely just her sales that makes me feel that way.

Yet you still definitely hear Alanis's name. Very strange.
