During the last few years of the '00s, the top of this chart was filled with singers like Keyshia Cole, Maxwell, Melanie Fiona, etc.

For example:
In 2009, two of the #1 songs on the r&b chart were by rappers (Drake and then Jay-Z).
In 2010, No #1 songs were fronted by rappers.
However, in the last year, 43 out of the last 52 weeks have had #1 songs fronted by rappers. Only Miguel and Kelly Rowland's songs were 'rapper-less' #1s.

So, have there been significant changes to the composition of this chart? Like, they no longer mix in Adult R&B radio or something?

Or has r&b radio moved STRONGLY and QUICKLY back to Hip-Hop in the last year?

It's your latter point. In 2010, the majority of those ballads (as they were) reached #1 on Urban and were Top 3 on Urban AC. That was an exceptional year for more traditional R&B, but it was shortlived as...it hasn't happened since. But, the chart composition hasnt changed.

I'll be very curious to see digital sales this week.

If Monday was a much bigger day for the sales than the rest of the week, it's possible that Whitney could be right near the top.

It would be insanely amazing (although extremely unlikely) if she busted out a 15th week at #1.

Well at least Madonna got her Top 10 single. The album will still do well...she should have come back with something stronger even though I personally like the song. But if "Hung Up" couldn't get airplay then I don't think anything could have...

I don't even know if "Hung Up" would be a hit today. Disco is not a popular genre on radio.

The more I hear "Gimme All Your Lovin," the more I'm surprised it was even released. It's not that catchy and it's not well liked. Considering the extent of the promo she had and a song from a COMMERCIAL at the Superbowl outdid her big moment on the sales chart, it tells something right there. I'm surprised her label didn't do more test research and make sure they had a song that was undeniably catchy and instantaneous with people.

Yeah - for me the bigger story is how few big urban songs are crossing over to the top of the Hot 100. I recall when the tops of the Hot 100 and the r&b chart were very similar. This is a lot like the post disco early & mid 1980s when r&B rarely crossed over unless it was superstar product (Kool & Gang, MJ, Prince ... and now Jay-Z, Kanye, Drake)

How was Kelly Rowland's song featuring Lil Wayne a rapper-less #1 single. Kelly rode his coat tails to #1. If it was just Kelly, no one would've even given the song a second listen.

Clearly if Madonna had a better song out there, she'd be doing better and the charts would be reflecting that. The song isn't even mobilizing her fans to gobble it up at iTunes and at least have the song do well on the sales end of things. All the great promo, a Clear Channel deal, and a cool video have been wasted on a terrible track.

I don't see how this is a valid excuse. How is fun being a new act helping its sales?

Even though she's past her prime, Madonna is a name capable of pulling in sales. With all the promo the song received, the sales are disappointing, just as the song is disappointing. I'm not a huge Madonna fan, but it's sad to see a legend putting out such mediocre material that clearly tried to pander to what's hot at radio but didn't succeed, especially when we know she's capable of producing quality tracks. It does make me wonder what the quality of the rest of the album will be like if this was the song on which they decided to cash in their biggest promotional chips.

Novelty. The novelty of people discovering something new is incredible. Imagine if the Gotye song was done by a familiar already-established act? No way would it be as big as it is. I'd say the same with this fun. track.

The correct answer is: Hung Up wasn't played because it didn't reflect the trends on US radio at the time.

If HU was released in the *current* radio environment, I think it would have a much better chance at doing well at Top 40 in the US. If a half-baked turd like GMAYL can have a decent debut, a classic like HU would have been much more galvanizing for her casual fans.

And yes, obviously there would be some element of ageism at play that would somewhat limit the progress of any Madonna track. But I think HU, if released now, would have gone a lot further than GMAYL ultimately will.

I'm thinking there's going to be a steep drop-off within a week or so. Even Michael didn't keep up the huge airplay and sales boosts. People move on fairly quickly.

I think the poster was referring to songs where the lead artist wasn't a rapper. idk. However, I disagree with the bolded statement. He definitely contributed to the song's success, especially early on, but a Wayne feature alone would not propel a song that you basically imply would completely flop without his presence to the status of being the biggest urban song of 2011. Wayne features by more established artists have flopped. It's too strong to say that she rode his coattails. It was a mutualistic situation not a parasitic one.
