Madonna is capable of pulling in some sales- as evidenced by reaching the top 10 at this stage. The Boss performed his new single at Super Bowl halftime a few years back, and only got to No. 95. :) Also- GMALY is light fare, but it doesn't sound like every other track on radio right now- and, to fit more in, she would have released a let's-party-all-night-type track rather than one that's so Madonna-centric, no? The second single, sonically, sounds more in line with what's going on at radio right now, but I have doubts that radio will give it much attention.
GMAYL essentially is a football/Super Bowl single. Hence, the cheers, video concept, etc. So, with the SB out of sight, it's not going to be a long-lasting hit. We'll see what the plan is for single No. 2.

Best case scenario is that this 'broke the ice' with U.S. radio programmers, and warmed them up an appetizer for a more memorable course ... a la "Mr Know It All" or "It's Like That"

I don't see how this is a valid excuse. How is fun being a new act helping its sales? Novelty. The novelty of people discovering something new is incredible. Imagine if the Gotye song was done by a familiar already-established act? No way would it be as big as it is. I'd say the same with this fun. track. Fair enough, but I don't see how being a new act no one's heard of is any guarantee of sales. There have been plenty of new acts who have struggled to have a hit single, or whose first single only performed so-so before they hit big later on. And of course being an established artist practically does actually guarantee sales if the material is top notch and connects with the public. My point which I didn't explicitly state was that from my perspective the sales had more to do with the quality of the songs, not whether the acts were established or not, meaning I still don't think fun being a new act is the reason for them beating Madonna in sales this week, nor do I think the theme of the songs make a huge difference. Plenty of "Give Me All Your Love" type songs do well enough.

^'We Are Young" is more universal than Madonna's track- that's definitely a key element in appealing to a mass number of people. How many songs out there have the singer stepping off her throne and telling the wanna-bes that they've got to step into her world? There are tracks out there light and frothy like GMAYL, but I think it's just that the latter may not be everyone's cup of tea, for that reason or another (that they just don't like it, period, whatever). Madonna's not going to have it easy at U.S. radio, no matter what she releases. br- didn't you hear Madonna say she's filming the "Girls Gone Wild" video soon? :o She announced it on Ryan Seacrest's show last week. jebsib- we shall see. I suspect the second single will be out in advance of the album's release. That would be the first time that's happened with a Madonna album. With the Super Bowl tie-in, I can't imagine she or Interscope saw GMAYL as a long-lasting hit- hence already having the plans to do the second video.

If the Gotye song were by an established and popular act, it would probably be all over Pop radio by now instead of being cautiously avoided... and probably be a Hot 100 #1 contender by now too.

Yes, I also noticed that a few weeks ago. 2010 R&B #1s are SO different from 2011's. It's surprising they are consecutive years. Yeah - for me the bigger story is how few big urban songs are crossing over to the top of the Hot 100. I recall when the tops of the Hot 100 and the r&b chart were very similar. This is a lot like the post disco early & mid 1980s when r&B rarely crossed over unless it was superstar product (Kool & Gang, MJ, Prince ... and now Jay-Z, Kanye, Drake) Very true. Similarly in 2010, only 2 "predominately Urban" (ie: by a lead R&B singer, non-rapper) songs went Top 10 on the Hot 100, and they were "Say Ahh" and "Bottoms Up," both by Trey Songz. In fact, its the first year where no R&B #1 went Top 10 on the Hot 100. Disclaimer: I'm not including Usher's "OMG" since...well, I don't classify it as R&B.

Is GMAYL smashing overseas? It's been a hit by default almost everywhere except in the UK where nobody cares (#37 will probably be its peak). Surprised by the lack of love from the UK then. I get why the US hates it but I was somehow expecting a Top 3 hit at least in the UK despite how dreadful the track is.

When songs start its descent the biggest of fans start with excuses. That superbowl excuse is laughable, you really thought people would buy that ? The song is not doing great business, it's cheap, the lyrics are awful, especially when you arrive at her age, I and many possibly would expect something a little less meaningless. She's a ver intelligent woman, so why not prove so. She used to create trends, no follow them, contrary to what you are saying her single fits perfectly with the current trend, ok it's not electro fulled, but anyway, it's simply isn't good, and that's why it's struggling. When I first heard she was working with William Orbit I really hoped for another mature, yet fun album, like "Ray of light". Had she come back with something as good, as unique, as refreshing, as "adult" as frozen, radio and people would have a less hader time embracing her new single. We'll have to see what's more to come, but if it is like the first single, madonna is setting herself for the biggest flop of her career which his unfortunate coz I think after that it will be really hard for her to make a come back at this stage if ever she waits another 4 years, which would bring her to 58. She's used to be ahead of the crowd, ahead of her time, now it's like she wants to fit in and she's not trying to be risky anymore which has payed way more divident for her in the past. I hope there is something better to come, what is the next planned single and has it leaked ?

Pop is dominating now, and this is her first big success since the radio shift has been complete, so about 2 to 3 years now. So it's not much of a surprise that it's able to peak higher than her past big hits which came into a total different time concerning radio plays. I am just wondering how high it can go now. Are Rythmic radios playing the song ?

Would she have incorporated cheers into the track, and done a football/cheer-themed video if she weren't performing at the SB? I think we can agree that, after almost 30 years into her career, most likely, not. :) Aside from the general quality and people not loving it, the Madonna-centricness of the track would be the thing is has against it, as well. Re the perceived quality- look at all the dreck that reigns supreme on the charts at times. I guess it's just that more people tolerate dreck from certain acts. Does the general public really expect more from other acts? I don't know; we'd have to conduct a mass survey, I guess. Pre-teens and teens in general, probably don't give a hoot about Madonna, so I don't know if it matters what she puts out.

Thanks for including Gotye. Half a million increase in a day. I'll take that for now. Amazing that Calvin Harris is getting airplay. Feels like a British invasion of pop music is going on right now. Calvin's initial reaction from radio is awesome. I can't wait to see how far he can ride the awesome updates.

I understand what you're saying about radio's resistance against females over 40 and I agree, that would certainly limit its shelf-life as a single. Then to think that Madonna has a strong core fan base, so how many of those 250k would have purchased it anyway? Plus the exposure from the ClearChannel campaign. Agreed. I hate that the hardcore Madonna fans are using the age excuse now, because if any non-fan or casual fan brought up Madonna's age prior to the song's release we were immediately called ageist and discredited. This song got more exposure from radio or elsewhere than any song I can think of in my 15 year memory of following the charts. If it was selling well and radio still wasn't playing it, then maybe the "radio only isn't playing it because of her age" argument would stand some ground. But the fact is the public has been exposed to this and presented with this on a silver platter and isn't buying into it. It's not a strong song. If she came with something that stood out more I'm sure sales would be telling a different story right now.

Def. agree that the Superbowl tie-in HELPS the song, not hurt it. We'll see how the second single does saleswise if the video and production are not Superbowl related. I agree that Madonna is not likely to get a big radio hit regardless of what she does, but why the reluctance to call a spade a spade? Madonna gave us a song that sounded like a Willow Smith track. Just because she's unlikely to get a hit is no excuse for poor quality. I think most people here are grown enough to discuss the difference between quality and chart success.

TotallyEnormous- I've always commented about Madonna's age and the issue at pop radio and the young crowd, so you wouldn't have heard any of that from me. ;) LifeIn- I don't know what expectations Interscope had for the single past the first couple of weeks. Madonna did say last week that she was going to film her next video already, so who knows. The last album only had two proper videos, and we just may get that many with this new album, as she's going to be rehearsing for the tour and all that. The SB exposure was huge- especially for Madonna, who does not run on every talk show and awards show to perform her latest singles. But, alas, Super Bowl is history, and, guess what? No additional planned promo for GMAYL. Perhaps she'll perform the next single on one of the American Idol results shows. Speaking of which, they really should have released GMAYL on Thursday, Feb. 2, so after the minute preview of the video on Idol's non-live show, anyone interested could have purchased it. Not that that has anything to do with the long-term chart fortunes, just sayin'.

Well both... pop radio took forever to spin this. When it was at its peak (which it maintained roughly for nearly two weeks), the digital sales hung around in the lower 30's. Now pop radio is dropping it... and for some bizarre reason, the digital sales have spiked to 17 on itunes for the past week.
I mean seriously... if it's not one thing, it's the other! First it was pop radio's fault for taking forever to add this... and then it did its job, but now the public waited too late to buy it now that radio's done with it.

I do think that age is something that prevents some would-be hits from getting Pop play, but this isn't one of those cases. I just think age can be used as an excuse for something that's resonating with the public but radio ignores anyway. It's almost the opposite in this case because the exposure is there but people just aren't feeling the song.

Holiday Guy is a stan...of course he's going to make excuses of why GMAYL is not taking off as well as alot of people predicted(after the SP promo and having Nicki & MIA on it)but we all do it. I do it with Beyonce, Kelly stans do it, Lady GaGa stans do it, ect...it's what makes as stans so give him a break :)
