While this could be the case, plans frequently change. (For example, they announced RHI as single #3 and then changed that announcement within a few days to SFTTR.) If I was Adele's record label, and RHI hits #1 (or close to it), I would be doing whatever I could to convince her to give the OK to a fifth single.

A fifth single could keep this album in the top ten for the rest of the year. I would rather see this era reach its full potential and wait a little longer on a follow-up than to cut it short and see her rush back in the studio.

A fourth single will keep this album in the top 10 through the summer. It is a lock to repeat at #1 on the Billboard year end album chart already and is the leading candidate on the Soundscan calendar year chart
Maybe there is a new album in the works? or obviously they could decide on a 5th single later

I think she said after the Grammys that she was soon heading into the studio. I think the only question is whether her new album will be "23" or "24" -- depends if she writes/records before May. :)

I think she should wait a little while before releasing anything new. Give people a chance to miss her a little bit. Unless she has some GREAT material ready. Then I'm game. I guess I just don't want anything to be rushed.

I think the time between starting work on an album and releasing it is going to be more than a year, so I wouldn't be worried about being rushed.
She started writing "21" in April 2009 and it wasn't released till early 2011, for example.

^ I think a little over 2mill. & I wouldn't be shocked if her label decides to release a 5th single when 'RHI' starts peaking. I don't think it's necessary, but it's whatev. She's gonna hit diamond very soon

Tyga, fun. & Chiddy Bang Aiming for Top 10 Debutsby Keith Caulfield, L.A. | February 23, 2012 5:30 EST After a very busy Grammy-fueled week on the Billboard 200 albums chart where Adele's "21" collected a 21st week at No. 1 (but zero debuts appeared in the top 50) we should be seeing some fresh faces in the top 10 next week. On course for a top five debut is Tyga's debut set, "Careless World." It is shaping up to sell perhaps 80,000 to 100,000 by week's end on Sunday, Feb. 26 - so say industry sources. That figure does factor in how there was a clearance issue with a sample on the album's title track, which had an uncleared sample of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. The snafu forced the CD to be recalled last weekend before it went on sale on Tuesday, Feb. 21. New physical copies of the album -- without the sample -- is reaching retailers today (Feb. 23). The digital version of "Careless" was already corrected to remove the problematic issue. Adele's "21" will most certainly linger atop the chart for a 22nd week -- marking the longest run at No. 1 for an album since Prince and the Revolution's "Purple Rain" soundtrack reigned for 24 weeks in 1984 and 1985. Fun., who recently hit No. 2 on the Hot 100 with "We Are Young" (as heard in Chevy's commercial for its 2012 Sonic), might also take a bow in the top five next week with its second album, "Some Nights." It could move around 50,000 to 60,000 copies. The band's debut set, "Aim and Ignite," debuted and peaked at No. 71 on the Billboard 200 in 2009, and has sold 70,000 to date according to Nielsen SoundScan. Also heading for a top 10 bow is electro-inspired hip-hop duo Chiddy Bang with its debut full-length studio album "Breakfast." The set was released exclusively via the iTunes Store this week, and will reach all other outlets on Feb. 28. The album's track "Handclaps & Guitars" is iTunes free single of the week, which could push sales higher as the week progresses. As the present, it may sell 30,000 to 40,000. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 29.

How much has she sold in the Billboard year so far? Close to 3m I think? I will post exact numbers later but, 2 of the next 3 albums are Christmas albums whose sales count for zero at the moment. Then you have Drake at about 1.4m and Nickelback around 700K So this one is over. Unless something else comes out that can do 4 million PRIOR to the holiday shopping season

We're only 2 months into the calendar year, and the biggest sales come during the 4th quarter. Too early to tell if Adele will hold on through the end of the calendar year. If Eminem and/or Taylor release their next studio album sometime this year, they could challenge. And I wouldn't rule out a random breakthrough artist. But yeah, Adele pretty much has the Billboard year on lock at this point.

Yes, I am not ready to say Calendar year is a lock yet either but, Adele is going to repeat at #1 on the BB year since BB year 2012 does not include the 2012 holiday shopping season

Adele's 21 holds at #1 for an astonishing 22nd week. It is the only album to be #1 so far this year. On the horizon, however, are new releases from Bruce Springsteen, One Direction and The Shins, all of which could possibly debut at #1. Interestingly, all of these releases are also from Adele's label, Columbia Records. As a possible spoiler to an all-Columbia Q1, Universal's Hunger Games soundtrack hits on 3/20 and will be a formidable challenger for the top spot. Here's how it looks one week after the Grammys.
Adele 21 (XL/Columbia) 275-300k Whitney Houston Greatest Hits (RCA) 175-200k *Tyga (Cash Money/Universal Republic) 70-80k Now 41 (Capitol/EMI) 55-60k *fun. (Fueled by Ramen) 55-60k Adele 19 (XL/Columbia) 35-40k Bodyguard soundtrack (RCA) 30-35k *Chiddy Bang (Virgin/EMI) 28-32k 2012 Grammy Nominees (Universal Republic) 28-32k Van Halen (Interscope) 28-32k *Sleigh Bells (Mom + Pop) 25-28k Drake (YM/CM/Universal Republic) 25-28k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 21-24k Gotye (Fairfax/Universal Republic) 17-20k Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 17-20k
* Debuts (2/23p)

I think Adele will be at the higher end of the estimate. So she would of shifted 1 million+ more copies of 21 in two weeks, which had already sold 6.6 million beforehand. And with SFTTR still rising in airplay and looking to have great longevity and the release of RHI imminent, the album looks set until mid-summer. Also 37 of its 52 weeks on the charts so far it has sold 100k+ and averages out at ~141.4k copies sold each week. It's top 5 sales weeks so far are:
1. Week 52:729,900 2. Week 44: 398,766 3. Week 1: 351,649 4. Week 43: 276,689 5. Week 51: 237,479
I really can't wait for the end of the era. It'll be great to see it's overall sales in the US, UK & WW and all it's chart statistics ect. Atm its sales are:
US: 7,352,609 UK: ~4,000,000 WW: ~18,360,000
Sorry, I'm just quite excited as I haven't seen something like this happen before - I've been following the charts since late 2007.

No one on the horizon to beating Adele until March at the earliest (I assume she'll be selling only 150k per week by then):
3/6 Bruce Springsteen 225k? 3/13 One Direction 150k? (now I know why they moved up release date a week....there's no competition for #1 except Adele) 3/20 Hunger Games Soundtrack (Taylor Swift) 200k?

Even if the promotion ended after "Rumour Has It," that's still one hell of an era. Also, I think that stopping there could also prevent burnout between the (promotional) end of the album's cycle and make people anticipate what comes next more.

I'm hoping for Rumour Has It and then Turning Tables. TT would be a great song to end the era with.

I agree with the prediction that 21 will definitely have the BB year-end number 1. But, I do think it's very nearly a definite that 21 will be the calendar-year number 1 as well. Here are the calendar-year top sellers for the past several year, NOT including Adele's 21 from last year:
2011 - Michael Buble's Xmas album, 2.45 million 2010 - Eminem's Recovery, 3.4 million 2009 - Taylor Swift's Fearless, 3.2 million 2008 - Lil Waye's Tha Carter III, 2.9 million 2007 - Josh Groban's Noel, 3.7 million 2006 - High School Musical Soundtrack, 3.7 million
By the end of Sunday (so essentially in the first one sixth of the year), 21 will already be at 1.8 million for the calendar year. I have no doubt it can crank out another two million by the end of the year (which would "only" be an average of 45,000/week for the rest of the year) which would put it comfortably ahead of the top-selling albums for the past 6 years (not including the album itself last year, obviously). So even if something else does come and surprise us all (which is certainly possible), it would have to outsell the top-selling albums of the year from 2006-2010, meaning it would have to be the next biggest thing to Adele. Not likely, but not impossible.

The thing about Fearless and Speak Now is that they were released too close to the end of the year. Imagine if she released in the spring or summer and had another major pop hit or 2 that kept it selling through the holiday season. It's a lot of "if's", but it's certainly possible.

I'm pretty sure Taylor has said she will release her new album in October, so even with monumental sales, I'm not sure she'll have enough time to get any more than 4 million max, and that's only if she has a major crossover hit. Adele's 21 should have sold at least 4 million by the end of the calendar year.

It would be horribly stupid of her label to not release TT after RHI. If they can keep this era alive until next Christmas, she will again see gains during the holiday season and she would have new material to submit to and perform at the Grammys. The label must know that an era like this one is once in a life time, and I think any smart business person would want to milk it for all its worth.

They might as well end with TT since she won't be releasing a full length album for at least 2 years.

Billboard reports that 150k copies of Tyga's album was pulled from retailers.
New copies of the album have been shipped and should be arriving today at retailers.

Adele's '21' May Sell 300,000 In 22nd Week at No. 1
February 24, 2012 By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
Adele's massive sales figures just keep piling up.
Her "21" set, which took home the Grammy Award for album of the year on Feb. 12, should spend its 22nd week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week. Industry sources suggest the album could sell another 300,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Feb. 26.
This past week, the diva's album -- her second -- reigned at No. 1 with 730,000 after the first full week post-Grammy Awards.
If "21" is No. 1 for a 22nd week, it will be the longest run at No. 1 for an album since Prince and the Revolution's "Purple Rain" soundtrack was tops for 24 weeks in 1984 and 1985.
The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 29.
Aiming for No. 2 next week is Whitney Houston's "Whitney: the Greatest Hits," with perhaps 150,000-170,000 sold. Adele and Houston's sets might be the only two albums to surpass 100,000 this week, as the next-biggest seller looks to be Tyga's new "Careless World." It's shaping up to sell around 80,000 to 90,000.
On Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart (below), Adele is No. 1 while Tyga is at No. 3. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (ending Sunday, Feb. 26) as reported by six major merchants.
(Houston's "Greatest Hits" is absent from the Building Chart, as it does not include catalog [older] albums. However, "Hits" will be present on the Billboard 200 next week.)
fun.'s sophomore album, "Some Nights," is at No. 2 on the Building chart and could arrive in the top five of the Billboard 200 next week. The effort is projected to sell around 50,000 to 60,000.
Other new albums that could perhaps start in the top 10 next week: Chiddy Bang's "Breakfast" and Sleigh Bells' "Reign of Terror." Chiddy Bang's set is exclusive to iTunes this week and may sell around 25,000. Sleigh Bells' effort could sell 30,000.
On the Building Chart, Chiddy Bang and Sleigh Bells are found at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
As for the rest of the Building Chart's top 10, the "Now 41" compilation sits at No. 4, the "2012 Grammy Nominees" collection is No. 7 and Drake's "Take Care" is No. 8. Van Halen's "A Different Kind of Truth" is No. 9 and Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" is at No. 10.
Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart (Current Albums Only!):
Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title
1 1 Adele "21" 2 NEW fun. "Some Nights" 3 NEW Tyga "Careless World" 4 3 Various Artists "Now 41" 5 NEW Chiddy Bang "Breakfast" 6 NEW Sleigh Bells "Reign of Terror" 7 5 Various Artists "2012 Grammy Nominees" 8 12 Drake "Take Care" 9 6 Van Halen "A Different Kind of Truth" 10 17 Rihanna "Talk That Talk"
The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

^How much had Purple Rain sold in week 52?
It was certified 9x platinum after 7 months and it was nearly 5 years old before it hit 10m.
Adele will almost certainly reach 10m faster than Purple Rain did.
