It's kind of hard for the industry to claim that illegal downloading is destroying the music business and ruining artists' chances of making a living when they turn around and sell albums for a quarter. Definitely sending out mixed messages there.

I hope they change the rules effective immediately. We already know Lady A will rob someone else of a #1 on the Country album chart. Who knows which 25 cents album will be chosen tomorrow and the damage it'll cause....maybe someone with a huge stan-base just for fun.
We all know the Rihanna stans will be buying 100 copies if it's 25 cents. It could get her a #1 album. ;)

For the record, Lady A (and Now 40) was discounted multiple times during Google Play's (then Android Market) discounts on Cyber Monday and at the end of 2011--I don't know if it's the label's doing or Google's, but I would expect the same titles as before to be discounted again (including Rihanna, Drake, Coldplay, Florence + The Machine, David Guetta, and Katy Perry). (Coldplay's is probably the most likely contender there, considering they partnered with Google Music during their launch to offer exclusive content and discounted music.)

I respect Springsteen's career and status, but I'm definitely pulling for Adele to stay where she is. I don't think a legendary act DESERVES a number one just because of past success. This goes for you too, Madge. Lol. He deserves #1 because Wrecking Ball shits on 21 from a great height. That was a very insightful response. Thank you.

Trombones was correct, Coldplay's latest album is today's 25 cent offer. I guess that means they'll be in the #5-9 range on next week's chart? (Depending what is offered tomorrow and Sunday)

I wish Canada had access to these 25ΓΒ’ albums. Google what is it? I'm going to look into it.

Hehe; called it! I wish Canada had access to these 25ΓΒ’ albums. Google what is it? I'm going to look into it. It's Google Play, which was formerly the Android Market. They rebranded it as more of a media hub, similar to iTunes. play.google.com

They count once they've been charting for more than four weeks, as has already been addressed in this thread.

This doesn't tell us whether Billboard will be counting the 25-cent sales or changing the policy, as neither Google Play nor Amazon report to the Building Chart. www.billboard.com/#/news/project-x-soundtrack-gunning-for-top-three-1006424352.story?utm_source=most_recentWhile Adele's "21" and Bruce Springsteen's new "Wrecking Ball" are vying for the No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 chart next week, the soundtrack to "Project X" is poised to the crash the party in the top three. The companion album to the film about a house party that gets out of control might be headed for No. 3 with perhaps 20,000 to 30,000 sold by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, March 11. Last week, the album bowed at No. 23 with 17,000 sold in its debut frame. Meanwhile, both Adele and Springsteen's sets are looking to sell over 200,000 copies each. On Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart (below), Springsteen is No. 1 while Adele is No. 2 and the "Project X" soundtrack comes in at No. 3. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. As for the rest of the top 10 on the Building Chart, the "Now 41" compilation is found at No. 4, Tyga's "Careless World" is No. 5 and Drake's "Take Care" sits at No. 6. Fun.'s "Some Nights" is No. 7, Rihanna's "Talk That Talk" is at No. 8 and Luke Bryan's "Tailgates & Tanlines" is No. 9. Rounding out the top 10 is Andrew Bird's new "Break It To Yourself" at No. 10. Do note that Whitney Houston's catalog of older albums are missing from the Building Chart as it does not include old titles. However, all will be present on the Billboard 200 next week (as it features both new and old sets). The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, March 14. Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 NEW Bruce Springsteen "Wrecking Ball" 2 1 Adele "21" 3 23 Soundtrack "Project X" 4 4 Various Artists "Now 41" 5 6 Tyga "Careless World" 6 8 Drake "Take Care" 7 12 fun. "Some Nights" 8 9 Rihanna "Talk That Talk" 9 18 Luke Bryan "Tailgates & Tanlines" 10 NEW Andrew Bird "Break It Yourself" The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

^Based on the rules that were announced, we knew they would count.
I can see digital copies selling for less than physical CDs, but 25 cents? Lawdy.

Yeah I don't see why Billboard is wrong for counting these sales, they fall within the rules the previously set last year.
Whether or not they'll change the rules after next week's chart (like they did after Lady Gaga for newly released titles) is a whole other discussion.

They may change the rules again after a few of these 25 cent sales but for now this is what we got

I got the new Now! and Lady Antebellum album LOL. Just cause they were a quarter on Google Play. They have some excellent deals from time to time.

5 6 Tyga "Careless World"
I guess this is going to have some legs despite the low first week sales.

Never bought anything from Coldplay before today, but I couldn't turn down 25 cents... 24 actually with the penny in credit I still had! Admittedly I don't think such ridiculous price cuts should be counted - but it's not like it's going to catapult anything up to #1.

There hae not been enough instances yet for a rule change. If Katy Perry were to sell a new album for 25 cents it would sell big. However, there is no reason to belive these older titles will do that, even for 25 cents
Once there starts to be instances like that, a rule change will come

I'm so upset I can't take part in these delicious deals! :@
EDIT: Nevermind... I think it worked just now. Although I don't know exactly what to do next. Do the files only work in the specified google play app? I thought they were actually mp3s? I don't have an android device.
EDIT 2: You can download the albums you buy twice. Not sure if the files are restricted. Will find out once it's complete. But you can play them on the google play app as much as you want.

Billboard is still extremely credible...and if you knew what you were talking about, you would know this rule has been in place for months. As these albums were released over four weeks ago, every purchase going towards the sale will count for an album sale in accordance to Billboard's new pricing threshold established last November.

Not even a 25-cent deal makes me want to get certain albums.
Rooting for The Boss' album (Springsteen, that is) to come out on top this week.

Not even a 25-cent deal makes me want to get certain albums. Maybe not, but it will certainly make you want to get certain other albums that you otherwise wouldn't have bought. I don't think it becomes illegitimate until an album is being sold for less than a song.

Well, at Google Play, that's the case. I went over there, and the available content looks very limited in comparison to iTunes, Amazon, etc. I'm sure it will increase over time, though.

Guns 'n Roses 'Greatest Hits' is today's 25 cent deal, but of course any sales that it gets because of the deal will count for next week's chart as the new tracking week begun today.
