THE NEW BOSS GOES AGAINST THE OLD BOSS Springsteen and Adele Vie for #1 Spot on Next Week's Chart
March 7, 2012
A battle is shaping up between a pair of Columbia superstars to see who will be the "Boss" of next week's chart.
Bruce Springsteen looks to be locked ina pretty tight battle with Adele for #1 next week, with both Wrecking Ball and 21 in the 200-225k range. One more chart-topping performance for Adele will give her 24 weeks at #1, tying her for the pre-Soundscan era with both Prince's Purple Rain and Saturday Night Fever. The West Side Story soundtrack holds the all-time record with 54 weeks at #1, set back in 1962-63.
The only other debuts of note are a pair of EPs, one from Capitol Nashville/EMI's Luke Bryan (17-20k), the other from Nickelodeon/ Columbia teen stars Big Time Rush (10-12p).
Album sales were flat vs. last week, flat vs. the same week last year and up 3% year to date.
Track sales were down 4% vs. last week, up 6% vs. same week last year and up 7% year to date.
TEA sales were down 1% vs. last week, up 2% vs. same week last year and up 4% year to date.

As much as I love Adele kicking ass, I hope the Boss gets a week on top.

If she does block him it's ironic that she'll tie Purple Rain's run at number one; that album kept Springsteen's 'Born In The USA' shut out of number one for months (although it spent seven non-consecutive weeks on top before and after Purple Rain).

Being #1 isn't everything
Born In The USA though was in the top 10 forever, went 15x platinum and had seven top 10 singles

That would be bizarre if Bruce was the one to end both Prince and Adele's long reigns. Though Adele's run would likely just be ended temporarily.

Springsteen has been to #1 a few times beyond this and has ended reigns of others

Bruce's 2009 album was what put an end to Taylor Swift's Fearless' run at #1 (although temporarily)

Bruce is worthy to stop Adele. Even if he does beat her, it's not like she won't return again...Let The Boss get a week in!

Springsteen has been to #1 a few times beyond this and has ended reigns of others No one's disputing his status as a legend. It's just fun to look at chart similarities from the past. Not really sure what your point is with this.

I think that Bruce is likely to debut at No.1.
However, it is amazing that "21" may sell over 200K for another week.

Springsteen has been to #1 a few times beyond this and has ended reigns of others No one's disputing his status as a legend. It's just fun to look at chart similarities from the past. Not really sure what your point is with this. If his last #1 album ended the reign of Prince, that would be stand out for me a little more. if he always followed Prince or other long-running #1 albums then that would too. One of his many #1 albums ended the reign of Prince. The #1 that was several albums ago. Since then, he has ended the reign of many others as well. So this "coincidence" isn't as bizaare to me as it is to you Regarding the "legend" comment. Not going there. "legend" is a subjective term and open to interpretaion. One person's definition may classify him as a legend, someone elses might not.

Oh, there's no denying The Boss' status as one of the all-time greats in music. Just common knowledge. At least it makes things exciting. Unlike the week Van Halen's album was released, there's no big music-event hype like the Grammys to give 21 a push- not that it really needs it, though.

Isnt it ironic prince shut out bruce ever reaching #1 in the singles chart . To this day bruce has not achieved a #1 in the hot100. He also prevented the bangles "manic monday" a song written by him from reaching #1 when it was stuck behind kiss

Yah- Bruce is just one of many all-time greats to never have a No. 1 on the Hot 100. James Brown is another notable.

Yah- Bruce is just one of many all-time greats to never have a No. 1 on the Hot 100. Aretha Franklin and James Brown are two other notables. Aretha went to #1 with George Michael - I Knew You Were Waiting...

How many weeks at #1 is she gonna eke out? Can she possibly get to 31 and be tied for 3rd?

Adele May Block Bruce Springsteen From No. 1by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | March 07, 2012 4:20 EST Bruce Springsteen's new studio album "Wrecking Ball" is on course to sell over 200,000 copies by week's end on Sunday, March 11 -- so say industry prognosticators. However, that may not be enough to bump the reigning Adele from the top slot on the Billboard 200 chart. Her "21" album will also sell more than 200,000 this week, and it thus may hold for a 24th week atop the tally. So far, only seven albums have spent 24 weeks or more at No. 1. The last to do so was Prince & the Revolution's "Purple Rain" soundtrack in 1984 and 1985. As for Springsteen, "Wrecking Ball" follows his last studio effort, 2009's "Working on a Dream." It started at No. 1 with 224,000 sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. If "Wrecking Ball" reaches No. 1, it will mark the Boss' 10th No. 1 album. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, March 14. Link.
