TAYLOR SWIFT - Eyes Open: 9.401 (+ 1.498)
This song is amazing! And it's nice to see a rock-out song can make some moves on radio. I really hope this becomes a huge hit!

Chris Rene's "Young Homie" deserves much more, amazing lyrics.

Over on the Digital Songs chart, fun.'s "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae) claims a sixth week at No. 1, selling 387,000 downloads (up 11%). That is the best sales week for a non-debuting song since LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" sold 417,000 downloads in the week after Christmas. Most songs see a huge sales week either in their debut week, during Christmas time or right after the Grammy Awards. However, "We Are Young" saw its massive 387,000 sales frame without any of those aids. Since SoundScan began tracking download sales in 2003, only one song has had a larger week that wasn't caused by a debut, Christmas or the Grammys. That was when Flo Rida's "Right Round" sold 460,000 in its second week on the chart -- March 7, 2009. Finally, "We Are Young" is now the year's top selling song with 2.39 million sold. It has surpassed 2011's No. 2-seller, Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" (2.25 million). Back in the top 10 this week, Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" (featuring Kimbra), rises 4-2 on Digital Songs with 208,000 (up 25%) and the Wanted's "Glad You Came" slips 2-3 (though up in sales) with 183,000 (up less than 1%). Taylor Swift's "Eyes Open," from "The Hunger Games" soundtrack, debuts at No. 4 with 176,000. That's her best sales week for a song since "Back to December" started at No. 1 with 242,000 on Oct. 20, 2010. Nicki Minaj's "Starships" is pushed down 3-5 (174,000; up 1%), Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" (featuring Sia) holds at No. 6 (168,000; up 6%) and One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" is steady at No. 7 (164,000; up 21%). Clarkson's "Stronger" falls 5-8 (151,000; down 7%) and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is a non-mover at No. 9 (138,000; up 12%). Closing out the top 10 is Train's "Drive By," down two rungs to No. 10, with 125,000 (down less than 1%). Digital track sales this past week totaled 25.68 million downloads, up 2% compared to last week (25.22 million) and up 4% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (24.78 million). Year to date track sales are at 334.70 million, up 6% compared to the same total at this point last year (314.59 million). Link[/quote]

So, I have to admit, I remain confused by "We Are Young." I don't dislike the song but it doesn't seem so special/unique to be getting such huge sales.

I'm just blown away by the success of We are Young. I hope that they can achieve some success with the follow-up single, "Some Nights."

To me, it sounds like one of the most unique songs on radio right now and I definitely think that is helping it. It stands out next to Nicki, Katy, Rihanna, Flo Rida, etc.
Almost 400K in a random week like this is crazy though. Wow.

Like I said on the WAY thread, maybe it's just a breath of fresh air for a lot of people who have grown weary of the same old type of songs year after year. Frankly I'm thrilled to see an actual pop/rock song at the top of the Hot 100 again, it's been way too long.

^ Not just crazy; UN-F***ING-PRECEDENTED.
If someone had told me when I first started listening to fun. that they were going to become record-breaking (alternative-)pop stars, there's no way I would have believed them.

^Would the song have taken off as it had without the nudge from media exposure? Perhaps not- but I'm glad it did. Otherwise, it may have drifted into oblivion, and the band would not be scoring its first hit.

Obviously the commercial helped, but tons upon tons of songs have had commercials and not had anywhere near this success. It is obviously just a slam dunk connecting song to the masses.

^Absolutely. It's exciting to discover a fresh act like this, too. Hopefully its success will not be limited to one big hit.

As much as the song annoys me, I agree. I do think the set up of the commercial helps more than usual (the song plays front and center- it's not just in the background like most songs featured on commercials) but at this point, after weeks of selling near 400k, it's more than just the commercial.

It's obvious why "We Are Young" is huge. I know everybody gets hung up on how different it supposedly is, but to me it feels just as pandering and obvious as any Katy Perry single. 'OMG I'm young too! I have friends! This is totes my song! ♥'

Yeah, I like We Are Young, but I don't see why anyone would be surprised by its success. Its lyrics fit right in with what CHR jumps all over the days. At least it's happening to a song with a bit of a more interesting sound than any given Katy Perry single though.

Yea I agree. I never thought We Are Young was all that revolutionary or different from what's currently playing on radio. It sounds like an anthemic-pop song. The chorus is reminiscent of Dr. Luke-esque productions found on tracks like Teenage Dream and Raise Your Glass imo.

^ Was it written toward that purpose though? I (perhaps naïvely) doubt it. I think that's naive, yes. I'm not going to pretend to know much about fun., but I really can't believe a song this focus-tested, social network-appealing and with such perfect ground work (appearing on Glee, for example) just happened. Even the fact that they're 'alternative' and a band seems like part of it to me, as if some executives sat down and said 'how do we take the auto-tuned diva factor and market it to people who think they're above that, while still hoovering up the typical buyers?'.

The story of this song goes that the band (primarily lead singer Nate Ruess) wrote it without co-writers (as he/they did nearly all of the band's songs on their two albums), and Ruess sang it for Jeff Bhasker in his pitch to have Bhasker produce the album. Bhasker loved the hook, and probably immediately knew how marketable it was.
I'm stubbornly choosing to believe that the Facebook-status-applicability of the chorus was a happy accident, not a conscious songwriting choice.
As for Glee, do the producers of that show actively seek out songs for inclusion, or are the song choices heavily influenced by record company incentives?

Everything panders or is marketed toward a mainstream audience so I won't be more angry at fun. for doing it while it is alright for everyone else to do it. The ultimate product is still a heart-felt, wonderful one.

It's like the safest, most calculated "different" one could come up with.

This definitely feels less of a "surprise" or "crossover" hit than, say, "Pumped Up Kicks" felt like.

The awkward moment where I'm a speshal firework so let me raise my glass because (what doesn't kill me) makes me stronger and I am young! RT if you agree!

The other annoying thing about this fun. song is that it's overshadowing the Gotye song right now! That song has been connecting with the masses completely organically, and because of the timing of the Super Bowl commercial (which launched fun., regardless of how much it mainstains it or not) the Gotye song is being overshadowed. Annoying!

Gotye will have their time. They'll have the 1-2 punch of SNL and Glee in a few weeks, which is perfect timing because fun. should be peaking in sales. I wouldn't be surprised to see fun. at #1 until Gotye takes over, which would be fine with me, so long as we don't have another shitty Hot 100 #1 debut due to front-loaded sales a la Part of Me messing up the streak.

I personally don't think We Are Young is that different at all - after a few listens to it. Once I got used to it, it dawned on me that there isn't a lot about the song that actually makes it stand out. However, initially I was brought in by his organic-sounding voice in the first verse. I mentioned in the topic for the song in CHR/Pop that he has a vocal quality that we haven't really seen given in a song on pop radio in a long time. He reminds me a lot of Don McLean in American Pie in that verse. Very folky and rich sounding. I know fun. uses a lot of autotune (purposely) on the album as well but that one verse was what won me over. Otherwise, the song has a universal theme as its own song but it also fits in well with the rest of the album, which I also love.
I think it sounds different enough to stand out on pop radio but not too different that it's like a sore thumb. A year ago, Adele was having the same thing happen to her. Rolling In The Deep is hardly anything different or new and its theme has been constant on pop radio for decades. But it's what is different from the current trends that makes a song stand out and people take notice. The more I think about it, the more I think fun. could be the Maroon 5 of 2012 (the way they were first big back in 2004).
