The album is at 14.99 iTunes and 17.99 at Target. Not .99 cents. Incredible. MDNA is $9.99 at Target until Saturday.

That's about 100k more than I expected for Madonna. How did this happen? It has to be the Superbowl effect somehow! I doubt it. I think its the concert ticket thingy. I'm sure the Superbowl played a big role in this in terms of pre-orders- It supposedly sold 50k that weekend alone. This is much higher than I expected but it's definitely going to drop like a rock next week.

Quite a surprise for Madonna!
I'm thinking that pre-order theory is probably spot-on. This might outsell Hard Candy in the long run. I really think they need to release "I'm Addicted."

MADONNA’S MATERIAL GAINS New MDNA Album Debuts on Top, Richie, Shinedown Debut March 28, 2012 It’s a lock for #1 on next week’s HITS Album sales chart, with between 325-350k, beating that album’s 280k opening. Werque I really was aiming for 250k but these are amazing estimates. Gold in 2 weeks and another platinum album for sure. The Queen betta show dem lessors how to do it.

This is gonna be a huge sales week. I'm sure Hunger Games is gonna post big numbers as well considering the box office take and exposure last week.

A fourth week in a row with Adele blocked from #1. Can she get back there or is it done at #1?

A fourth week in a row with Adele blocked from #1. Can she get back there or is it done at #1? she could have 1 or 2 opportunities if u look at the release schedule. next week mdna then 2 week of nicki week after is her best shot. There r albums of chris brown usher coming this spring. But if more time passes then her sales will continue to drop. but who knows google and amazon could make her album 25cent

Yay- more than I expected. People also underestimate- and forget?- the power of physical sales, which we have no way of tracking online. :) Also, I imagine the top sellers on iTunes are fairly close to each other. By the way- the 50K in pre-orders were only for the first day, not that whole weekend. There's also sales from fab.com, where the dude said he expected the album to sell "tens of thousands" of units. RE the album's reviews- it may not end up at the top of year-end best-of lists, but the reviews have been mostly positive.

Yes! She so deserves this. MDNA is surely going to be the very best album of 2012. It's not flawless, but it is still brilliant.

I am pleasantly surprised by those numbers. :) My prediction had been a lot more conservative based on the lack of a major hit single. Let's see where it ends up in terms of the actual sales once the week ends.

Lionel's numbers are incredible. It will give him his highest Billboard 200 peak since Dancing On The Ceiling in 1986. It's also by far his biggest debut in the Soundscan era, potentially more than doubling the opening week of Coming Home in 2006.

The pre-orders must have been absolutely huge in this case. She may have also had higher than typical redemption rates for the concert deal. Very successful opening though-fairly impressive that she can still open higher than almost all the young pop stars who have literally hundreds of millions more audience in airplay, tons more (traditional) promo, non-stop performances, etc.

Madonna's 'MDNA' Set for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200; Lionel Richie Also BigMarch 28, 2012 By Keith Caulfield ( keith_caulfield), Los Angeles Madonna's 12th studio album, "MDNA," is on course to easily debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week. Industry sources suggest the set could sell between 300,000 to 350,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, April 1. If "MDNA" lands atop the list, it will mark the queen of pop's eighth No. 1 album and her fifth consecutive studio set to debut in the penthouse. Her last studio album, 2008's "Hard Candy," started at No. 1 with 280,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. Madonna Scores Record-Extending 38th Hot 100 Top 10 The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, April 4. Madonna's first No. 1 came on the Billboard 200 chart dated Feb. 9, 1985, when her second album, "Like a Virgin," began a three-week run at the top. "MDNA's" first week will be bolstered by a successful album sales promotion involving Madonna's upcoming world tour. U.S. customers who bought a concert ticket also had the option of also receiving "MDNA" as part of their purchase. The only sales that will count towards Billboard's charts are those where the customer opted to receive the album. This sort of ticket/album promotion has been used in the recent past by such acts as Bon Jovi and Tom Petty. The latter's "Mojo" album saw a No. 2 debut on July 3, 2010 -- thanks to a fair number of customers who got the album via a ticket purchase. The same goes for Bon Jovi's 2007 No. 1 album "Lost Highway." Switching gears away from Madonna for a moment. She won't be the only big news on the Billboard 200 next week. Lionel Richie is poised to notch his best sales week since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991 and his highest charting album since 1986. His country collaborations album "Tuskegee" is looking at a No. 2 debut with maybe 125,000 to 150,000 sold. The album collects many of Richie's best-known hits, but he has re-recorded them with an army of country stars. Among the luminaries: Shania Twain ("Endless Love"), Blake Shelton ("You Are"), Kenny Chesney ("My Love") and Tim McGraw ("Sail On"). The last time Richie was in the top two was October of 1986, when "Dancing on the Ceiling" spent two weeks at No. 1. How Lionel Richie Sold Nearly 20,000 Albums in an Hour on Home Shopping Network Richie is also benefitting from a partnership with the Home Shopping Network (HSN), where the singer appeared during an hour-long special on March 16. Universal Music Group, Richie's record company, says he sold 20,000 "Tuskegee" albums during the show. (Those sales will count towards the album's debut week, as they were not fulfilled to the customer until this week.) Here's a flashback for you. When was the last time Madonna and Richie were in the top five at the same time on the Billboard 200? Way back on Oct. 4, 1986, when "Dancing on the Ceiling" was No. 1 for a second week and Madonna's former No. 1, "True Blue," was No. 5.

Wow!!! Way more than I was expecting for Madge!!! Great sales, and even if it crashes off the chart gold is guaranteed! Reminds me of when Beyonce open to over 300k, and the weeks before people were certain it would debut lower.
Amazing sales for Lionel too!!! s**tty for AAR but Bee Keeper's Daughter just isn't catchy on aswell as GYH.

I think a higher number than usual redeemed their album this time, compared to in the past, plus the "audience" is a little different between M, Bon Jovi and Petty. I myself receieved 8 copies of the album, from the ticket purchase. Many fans go to multiple shows, I would think they would easily be inclined to redeem the album.

i see why it went higher then normal they included the ticket redemption of the cds from the concert. that explains alot of why the total is higher then normal. Prince concert cd increased his total by 1 million but that album also sold over a million
