HC wasn't a badly reviewed album; it just didn't end up being a favorite when it came to year-end lists. Same may happen with MDNA.
2m- Billboard mentioned that the last time Madonna and Lionel Richie were in the top five together was 1986. :) While Madonna has remained a fixture in the top 10 since, Richie's only top 10 album since Dancing on the Ceiling was 2006's Coming Home. Country duets of his 70s/80s material has brought him back near the top tier of the chart.

A fixture?
Anyway, Lionel Richie and Madonna were two of the biggest stars from the 80s, fun to see both in the top 5

As in, every album she has released ever since debuted inside the top 3?

Madonna looks pretty front loaded with the pre-orders/concert ticket shenanigans but it is still a great debut week.
I'm expecting a MASSIVE drop off next week though. IMO, over 70% is pretty much guaranteed. The real question is how close it will be to 80%.

You are right to the extent on pr-orders but I don't think the tie in with the concert has that big of an impact. We'll see. Also, with all the news buzz next week about her big debut will keep it flowing some. I believe it will be a big drop but not much than usual with any album.

Even a low 20% redemption rate could have a 100k impact but my hope is billboard gives us a breakdown and we r not left having to guess. If without the redemptions it does over 220k thats a pretty decent performance. I am sure 90% of the redemptions will happen in the first week but the second week drop off could be 80%+

Yes- by fixture, I mean that she has had many albums in the top 10 since 1986. :)
Side note: She's about to land her 13th top 2 album. Her only albums of all-new material to miss the top 2 are 1983's Madonna and 1994's Bedtime Stories.

HolidayGuy (or anyone else),
Do you know which albums stopped Bedtime Stories in 1994? Thanks in advance!

^Who gives a rat's arse how much it plummets? Who expects Madonna- at 53- to keep scoring hit single after hit single in the USA, or even have long-lasting albums success? The fact that she can still command a very nice opening in sales, and score top 10 hits at all (regardless of longevity) is muy impressive. Long live Her Madgesty, the Queen of Pop. And, by the by- why do some not talking about physical sales? I'm sure we'll see a breakdown of physical, digital, etc. etc. Hard Candy scanned 207,000 physical units upon its release (+73,000 digital). For the generation coming up today, Lady GaGa is their Queen Of Pop. No one has a handle on the title because there's a different Queen Of Pop for every generation. In the 70's - it was Diana/Barbara In the 80's - it was Madonna/Janet/Whitney In the 90's - it was Mariah/Whitney/Janet/Madonna In the 00's - it was Britney/Beyonce/Rihanna In the 10's - it's GaGa Madonna is not the all the time Queen Of Pop. She's just one of many female superstar singers who share the crown.

^^You can spin it as much as you want, Madonna will always be the Queen of Pop. No one will ever do what Madonna has done for pop music, that in itself shows she is the Queen of Pop.

Omigod Becky, that like makes total sense!
I mean all of those women have had 30 year careers and sold 300 million records. All of those women are in their 50s and still manage to hold some sort of relevance. They ALL have tours that gross $300 million or more. And they all hold the record for the most top 10s by any artist in history! They are all worthy of the Queen of Pop title.
Oh wait

Lulz at Lady Gaga and Britney.
Yo I heard Justin Bieber is the King of Pop. I mean he's really famous and he sings pop songs so it must be true

Titles do not work that way, Madonna did not gain that title from simply being popular or hot for a few years. She earned it by not only having tremendous chart success but also transcending music by being an icon. Those other women have never ever been referred to as the "Queen of Pop". Just like Whitney holds the title of "The Voice". Do you think she loses that just because another singer with a big voice comes along?

Discussions about titles are so fucking redundant. They are the single most toe-curling thing about Pulse, and that's saying something.

Kinda stunned by the Hunger Games projection. :o Is HITS lumping Katy Perry's album with Teenage Dream?
HITS
As many as six debuts will land in next week's Top 15, with Madonna leading the way, the second of at least three weeks for UMG in the #1 slot. Next week, ending 4/8, Nicki Minaj is expected to debut on top. Lionel Richie continues to astound with remarkable, sustained sales. Also note: a year ago, Adeleβs 21 was also in the #3 spot, with 94k in sales. Twelve months later, sheβs in the same place, this time with between 110-120k as her remarkable story continues. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
*Madonna (Interscope) 325-350k *Lionel Richie (Mercury Nashville) 150-175k Adele 21 (XL/Columbia) 110-120k *Shinedown (Atlantic) 85-95k The Hunger Games soundtrack (Universal Republic) 65-75k One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 40-45k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 30-35k Bruce Springsteen (Columbia) 27-30k Now 41 (Capitol/EMI) 25-28k The Shins (Columbia) 24-27k *The Used (Hopeless) 24-27k Whitney Houston Greatest Hits (RCA) 21-24k Gotye (Fairfax/Universal Republic) 19-22k *The Mars Volta (Warner Bros.) 17-20k *All-American Rejects (Interscope) 17-20k Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 17-20k fun. (Fueled by Ramen) 17-20k Adele 19 (XL/Columbia) 17-20k
*Debuts (3/29p)

She last made an appearance at one of our Pulse Awards shows 3-4 years back Kinda stunned by the Hunger Games projection. :o Is HITS lumping Katy Perry's album with Teenage Dream? It's possible. But Billboard might handle it differently.
