i wonder what those pre-'91 debut weeks were....
and yes, the ticket redemption is an on-going thing.

The redemption number seems so high. Hmm. I feel like it might include digital pre-orders? (I guess one could consider getting the single when you pre-order the album as a "bundle.") It has to. Otherwise we're going to have to infer that she only sold 56,000 physical albums, which does not seem likely, no matter how many twists and turns we take on this subject.

I can only imagine what her worldwide sales would be if she did this promo in every country. Wonder what her first week world chart numbers will be like?.....the U.S numbers help a lot, but i was a little shocked her UK numbers were so much lower then COADF....still hoping for 850,000 plus.

I feel very good because the Billboard article reiterates the 2 main points I kept trying to point out to some people and I was called illogical.
I pointed out that the redemptions were mostly coming from big Madonna fans and even the article stated that obviously most of those people would have purchased the album anyway. Many of you are trying to follow the logic that if she would not have done the redemptions that basically 0% of those Madonna fans would not have purchased her album.
It also reinforced the fact that business is all about making the consumer feel like they are getting something for free even though the price is being rolled in to the concert ticket via bundling.

The hardcore Madonna fans that got the redemption likely also bough the album in the store
As many seem to want more than 1 copy

Lionel Richie Sells 198,892 In First Week For Country AlbumApril 4, 2012 at 1:40 PM (PT) Be the first to comment!Lionel Richie Congrats to MERCURY NASHVILLE artist LIONEL RICHIE as his album βTuskegeeβ sold 198,892 units in its first week, making him #2 on the SOUNSCAN Top 200. He was beat only by MADONNAβs βMDNA,β which sold 358,653. βTuskegeeβ is LIONELβs first Country album and features duets with many Country artists like LUKE BRYAN, LITTLE BIG TOWN and KENNY ROGERS. This is LIONELβs best highest-charting album since 1986 and the best-selling debut by any Country artist this year. βI am ecstatic!β RICHIE said. βThese songs are like my children, so I am overwhelmed that they are being embraced by several generations of music lovers. I am so grateful to all of my duet partners for bringing their own distinctive styles and personalities to this album and interpreting these songs in fresh new ways. Chairman/CEO of UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP NASHVILLE LUKE LEWIS added, βIt is gratifying to see consumers react this way to a collection of timeless songs, great performances and an outstanding marketing effort by the UMG team.β The album also debuted at number one on CANADAβs Top Album chart and reached the Top 10 Album Charts in the UNITED KINGDOM, DENMARK, HOLLAND and SWEDEN. undoubtedly she had bigger weeks pre-'91). Maybe, maybe not. Music sales back then weren't as big as they were in the late 90s and even fairly recently. Actually, in 1988, CD sales reached 200 million for the first time (passing vinyl sales for the first time) so a total of 400 million units sold that year while they topped out at nearly 900 million in 2000. My point is is that we often use the turn of the century as a baseline for what music sales were before that period but it was only a short period that record sales were as high as they were. Plus, I think the concept of high first-week sales is still relatively recent as well so her or anyone's first-week numbers from the pre-soundscan era might not be very much compared to any period afterward.

That's not true purple rain in 1984 sold 1.3mil albums in the first 24 hours. can dig up the links from the nytimes and vh1 if u want proof

1st week pre soundscan numbers are merely speculation and difficult to verify even if it wasn't speculation They had some inventory control system of some sort which if not 100% accurate must have error rate of 20% max. I dont think they pulled the numbers outta thin air. In the future you could even have more accuracy they could point out how many fans bought the album and negate the double buys. one madonna fan was saying he bought 6 albums. Google has a system called hadoop which lets u crunch the data in 1 hr which might have taken u 1 month b4

^^^You will always have crazy fans that buy multiple albums no matter what. I love Madonna but she is only getting one purchase from me. Charts are fun but the most important thing to me by far is that I enjoy the music, other than that no big deal.

There was a report back in the day that Madonna was selling 75,000 records a day- not sure if that was for album and singles, only albums, etc.
Some album shipment figures from the 80s:
1985: 528.7 million 1987: 619.1 million 1988: 672.4 million 1989: 688 million 1990: 740.4 million
Shipments slipped some in 1991, before rebounding in 1992. In 1994, album shipments surpassed 1 billion for the first time. Shipments dropped below 1b in 1997, but then topped 1b again each year thereafter, until dropping back in 2001. After that, it was annual declines (barring a one-year slight gain in 2004).
A note: CDs surpassed cassettes for the first time in 1992. Cassettes dropped below 300m in 1995, below 200m in 1997 and below 100m in 2000.

The gains after 1987 were due to fans updating their LP/cassette collections to CD.

I think that was argued during the Born This Way days as well. But at the same time, assumptions can't be made in either case. It's a good assumption but I also know that Madonna is a career-performer who many people would pay to see regardless of new material, like Elton John or U2. She's one of those performers that is almost a must-see for anyone who likes concerts. The second one I do agree with but then why did Billboard change the rule after Prince. They could have said the same thing as well.

They could have said the same thing as well. he price of Madonna's album was bundled into the ticket purchase. I can understand why there's confusion about this. Even the CEO of Ticketmaster tweeted that fans buying tickets got "a free copy of MDNA." (The March 30 tweet has since been taken down). Such is the less-than-fully-transparent nature of bundling.

and yes, the ticket redemption is an on-going thing. The impact though won't be significant very long I meant with the next tours and albums...not the future dates of this current tour.

Here you go again...that has nothing to do with my comment. If Lionel has no problem with it, why do you?

^ Also, why grounds could he possibly have for suing Billboard? Your comments are absurd and wasteful, asg4. Please stop.

So the basis for the suit would be?
If you Madonna, had not offered 180,000 free albums with the purchase of a concert ticket then I would have sold much more than 199,000?
Oh wait....If I had not purcahsed a bunch of time on the Home Shopping Network my numbers would be smaller too....
Nevermind ;)
