Vinyl sales are low, so I wouldn't count on any of that for stabilization. If I were to buy the MDNA album, I'd buy it on vinyl. But I do realize I'm in the vast minority on that one. I picked up my vinyl copy yesterday. I don't think I'm going to open it though. I'll just keep listening to my CD copy.

^ Seems fair. This was going to be the week she fell to pre-Grammy levels anyway, but it still doesn't feel good to see such a big drop. Who am I to complain about a 60th week about 85k, anyway? It's not a big drop. The entire Hot 200 is below 100K. Seems more like a market trend dip than anything.

This will be the second week this year that the No. 1 album is on course for less than 100K. Last year, there had been eight instances up to the same point that the No. 1 album scanned less than 100K.

Monica, Bonnie Raitt and Counting Crows Aiming High on Billboard 200
April 13, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
R&B singer Monica is heading for her fifth straight top 10 album, as New Life is aiming to sell around 60,000 by week's end on Sunday, April 15, according to industry sources. That figure might be enough to give her a top five placing on the tally next week.
The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed the morning of Wednesday, April 18.
Monica's last album, 2010's Still Standing, debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, shifting 184,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan. All of her efforts, save for her 1995 debut Miss Thang, have reached the top 10. Her lone No. 1 remains 2003's After the Storm.
While Monica will likely be the chart's top debut, she may not sell enough to hit No. 1. That honor will probably fall to Adele's 21 -- again! -- which could move perhaps 90,000 to 100,000 and notch a 24th nonconsecutive week at No. 1.
Veteran singer/songwriter Bonnie Raitt may have her highest charting album in nearly two decades, as Slipstream may sell around 40,000 copies. That could be enough to start in the top 10, depending on how the rest of the week shakes out. Raitt hasn't visited the top 10 since 1994, when Longing in Their Hearts spent seven weeks in the region, peaking at No. 1 on April 16.
Counting Crows are also in the hunt for a high start next week with Underwater Sunshine, the rockers' first studio album since 2008. It may move around 20,000 or so, which would likely enable a top 20 debut. The band's previous studio release, 2008's Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings, debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 106,000.
On Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart (below), Monica's New Life is No. 1 ( :o :o), Adele's 21 is No. 2 and Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is No. 3. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking, reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants.
One Direction's Up All Night is in fourth place, Hoodie Allen's All American is fifth, Raitt's Slipstream is sixth and Lionel Richie's Tuskegee is seventh. Rascal Flatts' Changed is at No. 8, Alabama Shakes' Boys & Girls is at No. 9 and Counting Crows' Underwater Sunshine is at No. 10.
Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart
Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title
1 NEW Monica "New Life" 2 2 Adele "21" 3 1 Nicki Minaj "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded" 4 5 One Direction "Up All Night" 5 NEW Hoodie Allen "All American" 6 NEW Bonnie Raitt "Slipstream" 7 4 Lionel Richie "Tuskegee" 8 3 Rascal Flatts "Changed" 9 16 Alabama Shakes "Boys & Girls" 10 NEW Counting Crows "Underwater Sunshine"
The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.
If only Monica had 'Still Standing''s numbers now. :'(

Following his 2-hour CBS special last night, Lionel Richie's Tuskegee has zoomed back up to Nos. 1 and 4 on iTunes (after being ranked in the 20s and 50s throughout the week. I wonder if HITS projections took the inevitable boost into account. Possibly, as SoundScan's building chart has it at No. 7.

Wait. Monica has a running for number 1? Not at all. New releases have an advantage in the first few days of sales, but taper off quite nicely as the week goes on. Meanwhile, Adele stays consistent throughout the week will just hang out at #1 for a while.

7. I may be wrong, but I don't think the potential boost from the Lionel Richie special was factored into his projected numbers. I say that only because the projected Billboard numbers came out before the special aired and already reflected a decline of approximately 50%. ( HITS initially predicted that he would drop to 50k - 55k.) I don't know how much, but I believe he will see some kind of an increase. He might end up back in the Top 5. Maybe, maybe not. I do know that the special did well in the ratings. The special led CBS to a win for the night. Also, the special increased in ratings over its lead-in show ("Undercover Boss") and it increased in viewers as the show went on. (Source)We'll find out on Tuesday how big of a sales boost, if any, the "Tuskegee" album received. Obviously, Adele will likely be the # 1 album. Beyond that, all of the other Top 10 albums seem to be really close in sales this week. The predicted positions may have changed a bit in the Billboard update, but this HITS info. posted earlier in this thread shows just how close the sales are in the Top 10 this week: It looks like we have another horse race for #1 next week as Adele and Nicki Minaj battle it out for the post-Easter lead. Based on midweek reports, we're giving Adele the slight nod, giving her a 24th week at the top. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend: Adele (XL/Columbia) 85-95k Nicki Minaj (YM/CM/Universal Republic) 80-90k One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 67-72k *Monica (RCA) 57-62k Lionel Richie (Mercury Nashville) 50-55k*Bonnie Raitt (Slipstream) 45-50k Rascal Flatts (Big Machine) 40-45k *Hoodie Allen (Hoodie Allen) 35-40k Gotye (Fairfax/Universal Republic) 28-32k The Hunger Games (Universal Republic) 27-30k Of Monsters & Men (Universal Republic) 27-30k *Trip Lee (Reach) 24-27k *Prince Royce (TOS/Atlantic) 22-25k *Counting Crows (Collective Sounds) 22-25k Madonna (Interscope) 22-25k Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 21-24k Alabama Shakes (ATO) 20-23k *Debuts (4/12p)

So, will Adele's 21 reach a 24th week? Or did Lionel Richie's Tuskegee have a mad sales weekend in the wake of his 2-hour CBS special and keep 21 at bay?

I dont think lionel is going to be near #1. I am surprised his 3rd week drop is rather large at 50%. Nicki could be #1 but adele will most likely nab it

Richie's final numbers for the second week were 95K- so the drop will be less than 50%, going by the projections (and of course less, if his album ends up higher).

From HITS: "LIONEL’S TRAIN KEEPS A-ROLLING: In what can only be described as a seismic reaction to his CBS special which aired Friday night, Lionel Richie’s Mercury Nashville debut, Tuskegee—in its third week of release—will vault over Adele and Nicki Minaj to take the #1 spot on this week’s HITS Album Sales chart at around 125k, more than double our midweek projection. (4/16a)" www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgi

HOLY CRAP. Well, people can be happy this album finally reached number one after the whole debut week fiasco.
But, damn...I selfishly wanted Adele to extend her reign, lol.

Even though it aired on traditionally low-rated night, I knew Lionel Richie's CBS special had the potential to vault Tuskegee to the top. :) I don't know any act who's worked harder in terns of TV promo or had more over the last few weeks than Richie, so good on him and his co-stars.

I feel so good for Lionel. I even posted on another forum that this album has potential to be a mini santana like blowup if he continues to relentlessly keep on pushing it for next several months

I hope he lands a #1 album... who have thought that we'd see a #1 album from this particular artist? It's always a legendary rock band or artist from 30 years ago (Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Barry Manilow, Rod Stewart, Tony Bennett, Johnny Cash etc).
But a pop/R&B artist from the 80's who released one of my favorite cassettes "Dancing On The Ceiling"? That's awesome!! I hope he gets the #1... even if it is for a lousy country duets album. He and Madonna can share royalties of being artists from the 80's who have landed #1 albums in 2012!

^Doing country duets of his old hits with country superstars was a very smart move- opened up his catalog to a whole new fan base. Plus, the amount of television promo has been crazy. Tuskegee will become the fourth duets album to top the Billboard 200, per Paul Grein's article back in September: music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-extra-it-takes-two.html

The "duets" thing has done wonders for artists 60+. It worked for Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Reba McEntire (okay so maybe she's not 60), but you see what I mean.
And the fact that he switched genres has helped him too.
But a #1 is a #1, so I'll take it!
