ADELE'S RETURN TO THE TOP? Monica, Bonnie Raitt, Prince Royce Along With iTunes Smashes Hoodie Allen and Trip Lee Hit Retail
April 11, 2012
With no new releases of note, Adele's XL/Columbia album 21 has a shot at returning to #1 next week. We'd call it a comeback, but she's never really been away, with the Grammy winner now approaching 9 million in sales since its release 14 months ago.
This would make the 24th time that 21 has topped the HITS Album Sales chart, tying the soundtracks from Purple Rain and Saturday Night Fever. Here are this week's key debuts.
Veteran RCA R&B diva Monica's new album, New Life, is looking at a debut of between 55-65k. Her last album, 2010's Still Standing, did 184k when it was released on March 23 of that year.
Bonnie Raitt's new album, Slipstream, her first indie release on her own Redwing label with distribution by RED, is on target for sales between 45-55k. It's her first album in seven years, since 2005's Souls Alike on Capitol, which did 50k back then.
Latin Bachata artist Prince Royce's Phase II, on Sergio George and Gregory Elias' boutique indie Top Stop Music label through Atlantic, is looking at first-week sales of 25-30k.
Counting Crows' Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did on Our Summer Vacation), on their indie Collective Sounds label, is headed for 24-27k.
Atlantic Records Pennsylvania rockers Halestorm's sophomore album, The Strange Case of..., looks to land in the 18-21k range.
In its first week in physical release, second overall, ATO's Alabama Shakes album, Boys & Girls, should do between 17-22k, for a nice two-week total of nearly 50k.
A pair of rappers, Jewish hip-hopper Hoodie Allen and Christian hip-hop artist Trip Lee are currently #1 and #3, respectively, on the iTunes chart, with self-released projects. We'll relay our information on those two titles as soon as our crack (-addled) retail team is able to get someone on the phone.
Meanwhile, album sales were up 4% vs. last week, up 9% vs. same week last year (which wasn't Easter) and up 1% year to date.
Track sales were up 9% vs. last week, up 26% vs. same week last year and up 8% year to date.
TEA sales were up 5% vs. last week, up 14% vs. same week last year and up 3% year to date.
With Easter two weeks later last year, at least some of the gains this week are likely to be lost by the end of the month.

^When did Monica have a comeback?
Those sales seem quite good for her.

Week 24 and probably more weeks during the next 2-3 months where there is a light release schedule
Once the current single runs its course, I can't imagine it continuing at 100K/week but we have all been wrong before with this

Indeed. We've all learned not to underestimate the appeal of Ms. Adkins on the record-buying public.
I think she said not to expect another album for a couple of years or so, but she may have the Bond theme later in the year, which will keep exposure going some more.

That is quite weak for Monica. I was expecting at least 100K with her devoted fanbase. Weak promotion?

This will also be the 10th trip to the top for '21'
This includes a #1 debut and bouncing in and out 9 times (a record btw)

I'm kind of shocked at Monica's numbers. I don't know how her single(s) has/have been fairing, but she hasn't had a big pop hit in forever and her recent albums still sold well. Eh. Happens to everyone eventually I guess.
Also, no numbers for Florence? I tried getting it at Target yesterday, but they didn't have any copies. Best Buy had a number of them though...

Monica should've asked to get shipped to Epic with LA Reid. Hell, I think the entire J Records should've went with LA. With Larry Jackson gone, the R&B acts don't really have anybody in her corner at RCA. (And RCA hasn't had an R&B hit act since it shut its Urban division down in 2001-2002 (ish). I feel bad for Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson etc too.

Let's see how Brandy does this summer. But I think it had little to do with promo but mostly the subpar material. But I really feel like Brandy is going to hit it big since her first single will have a feature.

Nearly 30k is pretty great for an independent release from Counting Crows. They have a pretty dedicated fanbase.
What about Florence + the Machine Live CD? Not even mentioned? I was hoping they'd get 30-50k

^I don't think there was much in the way of promo for it - hell, I didn't even realize it came out this week. Target doesn't seem to be carrying it either.

Adele's '21' Heading Back to No. 1 for 24th Week April 11, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
Adele's titanic-selling "21" album is looking likely to return to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for a 24th nonconsecutive week. While it's too early to tell just how much it will sell by week's end on Sunday, April 15, a figure in the range of 110,000 to 130,000 is possible.
The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, April 18.
If "21" returns to the top, it will mark the longest reign at No. 1 since Prince and the Revolution's "Purple Rain" soundtrack also spent 24 frames at the top in 1984 and 1985. Additionally, "21" would become one of only eight albums to rack six months atop the list.
"21" has now sold 8.64 million copies in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan and ranks as the 33rd biggest seller since the company began tracking sales in 1991. The largest-selling album in the SoundScan era is Metallica's "Metallica," released in 1991, which has moved 15.77 million. In terms of albums that were released this week that are looking to debut in the top 10 next week, a pair of titles may pop into the region.
Monica's "New Life" and Bonnie Raitt's "Slipstream" are possible contenders for the top 10, with sales starts somewhere in the range of 60,000 and 50,000, respectively. Other titles looking to impact high on the tally include Prince Royce's "Phase II" and Counting Crows' "Underwater Sunshine."

But anyway, this is quite a feat, and I wouldn't be surprised to see her get one or two more weeks after this. I can't believe how long this has been going.

While it is 26, a lot of people just average a month to 4 weeks and don't account for the extra days. Although I'm sure that Adele can manage 26 weeks as the release schedule seems pretty quiet.

I know Amazon isn't a huge music seller, but the album was in the top 10 yesterday I believe. and they had an Hour special that aired on Easter on MTV. I thought it would have done something...oh well. It is a great album though

Monica's worst decision was to launch this w/o the aid of a reality show. Keyshia made the same mistake last time. That kind of promo is invaluable for an R&B star.

I'm also surprised that I didn't see it in-store at Target since it is available online. Also, the stores I've seen stock several copies of both of their studio albums. I think if fans saw it on the shelves, regardless of how much promo it has received, there is a good chance they'd pick it up. So I feel like Target dropped the ball on this one. I expected a top 10/20 debut for this album. I know, as a fan, I've been anticipating an acoustic album and any kind of dvd from them. Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Wonder if Vinyl sales of MDNA will help it stabalize during its 3rd week. I know Vinyl sales are low, but many M collectors do purchase it on Vinyl.

I will bet we won't see MDNA in the top 15 projection that comes out later and we won't likely see any numbers at all until next Tuesday when they post the top 50

Vinyl sales are low, so I wouldn't count on any of that for stabilization.

So I take it that it will be Adele vs. Nicki for #1? Nicki is noticeably absent from the article, and it seems that the authors are unsure as to whether or not Adele will actually get that #1 spot. My guess is Nicki will do around 110k with Adele around 120k. Nicki probably won't get as high as 110k. If she experiences a typical 60-70% drop in sales, she'll get 75-100k this week. On top of that, the drop may be bigger than normal because Easter was last week.
