Battle Studies opened with 286k and nobody remembers Shadow Days so a lot must happen if he's going to do 250k.. But there's still a month to go.

Jason Mraz Vs. Lionel Richie For Next Week's No. 1 Album April 19, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield ( keith_caulfield), Los Angeles Jason Mraz's new album "Love is a Four Letter Word" is in the running to become the singer/songwriter's first No. 1 next week on the Billboard 200 chart. That is, if Lionel Richie's "Tuskegee" steps aside. Both albums are on track to sell around 100,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, April 22 -- so say industry sources. Richie's "Tuskegee" album topped the Billboard 200 for the first time this past week, selling 129,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, April 25. Mraz has so far peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 2008's "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.," which started with 73,000 in its first week. If Mraz's new set moves 100,000, it will mark his best sales frame yet, surpassing the bow of 2005's "Mr. A-Z," which launched at NO. 5 with 81,000. Also headed for a top five bow next week is Train's "California 37," which could start around Nos. 4 or 5 with perhaps 70,000 sold. It could result in the band's highest-charting album yet. They've gone as high as No. 6 -- twice -- with "Drops of Jupiter" in 2001 and "My Private Nation" in 2003. The act's last studio album, 2009's "Save Me, San Francisco," debuted and peaked at No. 17 with a 27,000 first week according to SoundScan.

I know there was talk of low numbers for Train, but the predictions are actually a lot higher than their last album opened with. So good for them.

^ I'm assuming 21 will be #3, with about 85k, then?

^ I'm assuming 21 will be #3, with about 85k, then? Probably. While Adele's sales have dipped after a monster first quarter, I feel like they're going to stabilize in this region for a while. Rumour is still climbing (YES!) and I can't see 21 just bottoming out.

HITS:
It's another close battle for #1 as Jason Mraz and Lionel Richie duke it out for the top spot. With a few days left, we're giving a slight nod to Richie, but anything can happen between now and Monday morning. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
Lionel Richie (Mercury Nashville) 100-110k *Jason Mraz (Atlantic) 100-110k Adele (XL/Columbia) 85-90k *Train (Columbia) 70-75k Nicki Minaj (YM/CM/Universal Republic) 50-55k One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 50-55k *Future (Epic) 35-40k Gotye (Fairfax/Universal Republic) 30-35k Bonnie Raitt (Redwing) 28-32k Rascal Flatts (Big Machine) 27-30k Monica (RCA) 24-27k Alabama Shakes (ATO) 22-25k Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 21-24k *Jack Johnson (Brushfire/Universal Republic) 21-24k The Hunger Games (Universal Republic) 18-21k *Neon Trees (Mercury/IDJ) 17-20k

Wow, it's kind of exciting to see someone other than Adele at #1 for a change. I'm really anticipating Justin Bieber's release. I think that will be the biggest first week since Lady GaGa last year.

^ I agree, it might be the "No Strings Attached" or "Millenium" of this generation, sales wise.
Nice to see two albums in the 100k range but I hope Jason takes it!

You think Bieber will be that big? I don't see it going much over 500,000 for some reason. Unless they do a.99 sale or something cheap.

So, it looks like it will come down to the final Billboard numbers to determine who will be # 1 this week.
No matter who ends up at # 1, it's nice to see a "battle" for the # 1 position.
Edit: Lionel Richie's "Tuskegee" will pass 500k in sales this week.

Judging from the massive response his new music is getting from the public, I think he's definitely gonna have a huge era. His label isn't messing around, they're definitely giving him massive promotion. I'm expecting first week sales of 700K-1 million easily. If they were to do a crazy "99 cent deal" like with GaGa that number could easily double. This feels like his No Strings Attached/Millenium/Oops...I Did It Again era.

No Strings? All the stars would have to be aligned just right for a 2.4 million opening

If they did a 99-cent sale those wouldn't be counted, though, so for all intents and purposes it wouldn't affect his sales at all.
Anyway, I'm thinking Bieber will do open a little bigger than he normally does - 400-500k. Boyfriend has plenty of buzz and all, but one song isn't going to make people immediately rush out to get an entire album from him. If the follow-up singles are on point however his longevity could surprise us all.

I'm sure his label is gonna drop another single before the album release.

Yep I'm thinking something similar to the Joe Bro's biggest opening...I don't see anything higher than 700k for Biebs(hope I'm wrong though, Beiber fever has set in <3)
I really hope Jason get's #1(even though in the end it really doesn't matter). Nice to see Train's prediction increase some.

I should clarify when I said "it might be the "No Strings Attached" or "Millenium" of this generation, sales wise" what I mean is that sales of the album will be massive for him and the sales climate but not necessarily as huge as the other two albums. I compared it to the two boyband albums because Bieber is sort of the equivalent now. 1 million might be a stretch but 500k should be the minimum for his opening

Who would have thought working with Country Artists would help you get a great selling album.

Didn't Mraz's I'm Yours single from his last album stay in the Hot 100 for a year breaking records? Thus his largest album sales release this time around.

^Not just any country acts, but some of the biggest names in the country world. Plus, amazing TV promo has aided as well. Lionel should try recording a solo country album with his next project and see if he can parlay the success of this one onto that one. Somehow I doubt it would be as successful- but it probably would outperform his last solo studio album, though.

Well, that's true- but his other greatest hits didn't perform like this out of the gate when released. ;)

No but like a lot of greatest hits albums they are stil selling welling to date. Definitive Collection is at 1.9 million.
If he had done a duets album of other peoples songs rather than his own, it would not have done as well

Oh, absolutely on that one. And, it's true, his compilations have been steady sellers through the years. Even his Millennium Collection has sold some 630K to date.

A New Release Schedule was not sent out this week.
Justin Bieber hasn't been added to the one that I was sent last week. I'll keep you posted on his first week estimate.
For next week: Jack White 120k and The Wanted 47k.

I'd think The Wanted will go higher. Not that I'm invested in the group, just that it would be better for the overall sales climate.

The numbers were depressing LAST year when albums were at #1 in the 40k range.
Things seem decently healthy right now. Only one week so far this year with a #1 under 100k, right?

^Yep, the Feb. 4 chart is the only 2012 chart where the No. 1 title scanned less than 100K. Recent years- up to this point- had many more. But, the industry can thank 21 for that feat.
