N'Sync didn't exactly start off strongly against the Backstreet Boys either. Not that I'm saying The Wanted will eventually eclipse One Direction in terms of popularity, but don't completely count them out yet. That's an excellent point. Good memory!! 'N Sync debuted very poorly and the album didn't sell well at all until their 2nd single (Tearin Up My Heart) became a hit. Their first single (IWYB) was a huge top 5 radio hit, but album didn't sell until they got 2 huge radio hits. So I guess lesson learned is not to count out any boybands until they have at least 2 radio hits. The BSB/N Sync comparison with 1D/TW is reminiscent to the album charts situation in early 1998.

Am I correct in reminiscing that TUMH was commercially released as a single very late, but did well on airplay and encouraged people to buy the album?

I don't quite remember how the commercial releases were timed for *NSync's first singles (although incidentally I still have my IWYB single with the album sampler snippets). What I recall is them doing some Summer Disney Concert a few months after the album had been out, and that is what really jumpstarted their popularity and album sales. EVeryone I know who likes One Direction is in their 20s and it feels like most of their promo has not been geared at Radio Disney or whatever. I do think their music appeals to kids so it probably helps that they are getting children AND adults and teenagers as opposed to The Wanted who seems to be falling into the Derulo trap a bit. eh theyve heavily promoted on nickolodeon and did the kids choice awards, nothing wrong with that though Yeah, I wouldn't say that 1D is only for children/young teens, but yeah, the main thing is that they put in the effort to target that younger crowd. And it's a smart move, as the general impression seems to be that that age group still buys albums more often (and more quickly) than the 18-24 crowd, which is why it wasn't particularly bright of TW to pooh-pooh the idea of soliciting the young'uns. And speaking of Jason Derulo, that highlights another problem TW has, which is that we know little of their personality - and what little we do know makes them look like jerks. I'll admit knowing little about 1D personally but I see other people talk about them and it's clear that people who like them, like THEM. Each guy has his own identity and fans debate their favorites. TW though...I don't think anyone in the US even knows those guys' names except for Max, who is basically the de facto 'hot a-hole' of the group.

^ yeah that was just a painful week. I remember being happy for Mumford & Sons to be in the top 3 so late into their run, but that was the only good that came out of those sales.

Now that the Whitney revival has died down. Lionel Richie appears to be first in line for #2 album of 2012

So The Wanted sell less than one fifth of the sales that One Direction did in their first week. Karma is a bitch.

Looks that way for now, 2m- though Carrie Underwood's fanbase may have other ideas.

And other albums yet to be released obviously. #1 is obviously already set but #2 seems to be up for grabs.

Adele has found her stride at the 80k and up point. Diamond is gonna be here in no time. I can't believe I'm witnessing this in this climate.

I know a few 14 yr old girls who LOVE One Direction. I've only really heard them mention Big Time Rush other than them.
