Where Have You Been is slightly higher than Scream, but no big deal. Wow at its audience though. Was it being played every hour? I heard it twice. First time I missed the beginning, the second time was at like 8:04 (PM) and it said Clear Channel premiere...

There are fierce competition between GOTYE and Maroon 5. Both songs got big increase yesterday. Gotye may potentially block Maroon 5's new single from reaching No.1.

These truly massive immediate airplay figures for brand new songs: These seem to be a new phenomenon. Obviously I am aware of the more recent examples of Madonna and Rihanna 'every hour on the hour' promos. But are the Justin Biebers and Maroon 5 explosions - which aren't automatic CHR superstars ... are these more examples of things like Clear Channel deals, or is CHR getting more proactive about spinning new songs earlier?

As far as I know, "Boyfriend" didn't have an airplay promo.
"Scream" instantly enters the top 40 on Mediabase's pop chart, with 888 spins (84 stations played it). So, it may have had an airplay promo for that format (which accounts for 12.094m of the total). It's not in the rhythmic or urban top 50.
Back in the day, radio would regularly give big-name acts' new singles big play out of the box. It still happens every now and again, but less than it once did, I think.

Second, I think. It all started with Hold It Against Me being the highest debut in like a decade, and since then basically every major release has debuted with 500-800 spins or more. Britney also started the trend of debuting at #1, or top 3. And people say she has no influence on modern music...

Good analysis, HG.
I've followed this stuff for so long, but just paid attention to the chart positions, not spins / stations. It just seems recently like every few weeks the Mainstream Top 40 chart gets a new unusually high debut.
Now, I'm old enough to recall when 'Erotica' entered Hot 100 airplay at #2.. Hell, I remember when "Thriller"'s Hot 100 debut at #20 was news. But it seems like PDs are doing something different in the last half year...

It's not just CHR, is it? I know that's where most of the airplay comes from, but didn't Payphone have an unusually high debut on Hot AC, and Boyfriend an unusually high debut on Rhythmic?

In the all-formats airplay era (December 1998-present), I believe we've only seen two top 10 debuts on Hot 100 Airplay: "All For You" and "Born This Way." I think AFY had one or two days of play before the chart cutoff period for that week and then blasted in at No. 9 on Hot 100 Airplay the following week. BTW had five days of airplay leading to its No. 6 airplay debut.
I wonder what "Erotica's" audience was for that No. 2 debut- I'd think maybe around 35m? It entered at No. 23 on Mainstream Top 40 and No. 5 on Top 40/Rhythm-Crossover for that chart week (of course, it had two extra days for its hot 100 Airplay debut that it didn't have for the spins-based charts). It maintained a bullet in its second week at No. 2 on Hot 100 Airplay, and then lost the bullet thereafter.

Codex - yes, You're right. I wonder if the radio industry is reacting faster based on the "iPod / iTunes" culture of immediate song ubiquity.
HG - Always wondered how #23 on Top 40 and #5 on Rhythmic could give Erotica an overall #2 airplay debut that week. I was never 100% sure it wasn't fixed, as the song was so top-40 unfriendly (for the time) and seemed like a prime candidate to be dayparted.

I remember around that time Roxette's "Fading Like a Flower" was #11 airplay and #14 sales, but somehow ended up at #2 on H100.

OK, Roxette can be explained. And it was a stupid and confusing thing that Billboard did: They were still doing the Hot 100 a la the old method, but simultaneously showing the sales / airplay components of the new upcoming method (BDS / Soundscan). So NOTHING matched during those 6 months.

Paula Abdul's "Promise Of A New Day" hit #1 on the Hot 100 but was only #5 on airplay and #25 on sales!

I posted in the Nostalgia forum recently that Martika's "Love...Thy Will Be Done" went Top 10 on the Hot 100 when it was #24 in Sales and #31 in Airplay.

... Meaning Roxette, Martika, and possibly even the Paula #1 wouldn't have been top 10 under the more accurate current Hot 100.

Gotye has a lot more streaming points which will most likely prevent Maroon 5 getting to at #1. Although I would love Maroon 5 to get another #1 on the hot 100.

That makes sense, but is further PROOF that the old system was a scam. :) I remember when Billboard published the airplay/sales chart (pre- BDS/Soundscan) and it was amazing how close sales and airplay matched. We know now that's just not the way it works. I'm so glad we're in an area of greater transparency.

Those songs may have been #1 or Top 10 before hand depending on when they were released within that 6 month period of time.

denverdan, it is hard to say how much of the old system was a scam. You can contrast Billboard airplay ranks vs Radio & Records to see if they were in line. (Even then, they used different sample pools, so its tough).
I will say that sales and airplay did line up a lot more in the 70s and 80s (than the 90s, 00s and today) as the music was considered less extreme, with CHR playing more variety, few if any country commercial singles, & very little rap and extreme hard rock being put out on 45 single (the single format for most of those years).

I don't think the old system was a "scam" so much as it was rather inaccurate guessing. There certainly was more room for "rigging" the charts when you're not basing them on actual numbers, but to imply the whole system was a scam is pretty far-fetched.
People are so hard on Billboard sometimes but I think they've consistently tried to be as accurate as they can be given the data they receive, tweaking things as new data becomes available.
