Billboard Hot 100: 05/12/12

[HolidayGuy]

The old system is what it was, and the best Billboard could do at the time. There were instances where a track's airplay and sales ranks weren't even close, but in most cases, they weren't that far off. Remember that reporters ranked the top songs/sellers and Billboard assigned a set number of points based on those rankings. So, titles could have been played/sold less than others ranked below it.

It was weird those six months when BB published the BDS and POS charts when it was still using the old methodology to compile the Hot 100.

jebsib- I did note that "Erotica's" rankings on the spins charts didn't include two extra days it had for Hot 100 Airplay. The second-week rankings were No. 5 (rhythmic) and 14 (Mainstream Top 40). It probably was played on big-market stations.

She has a limited scope of appeal in terms of radio genre.

Her single doesn't sound fitting for a Rhythmic crossover bid, and even for Adult Top 40 radio she may come across as a bit too Radio Disney-esque for a sizable handful of stations.

Thus, I'm not surprised, in spite of her strong strides at Mainstream Top 40, that you're not seeing mammoth gains like Gotye is enjoying. The latter's comparatively monumental gains can be attributed to his ability to cross age demographic and format lines. Those who grew up listening to Sting are perhaps just as likely to listen to "Somebody That I Used To Know" as those who listen to Alternative radio today. Carly Rae Jepsen doesn't achieve the same effect.
