Usher will be the next album to debut at #1 so we have 2 weeks where #1 will be up for grabs.

Expected but low for Kris. I'm thinking he'll be dropped after this album. I hope they can make something out of Haley's album, it's fantastic. Haley's album is fantastic indeed. It needs more promotion though.

If Lambert's album does 27K, that would be roughly a 65% drop- the norm for a second-week decline in today's climate.

Many people were predicting him to break records with his drop so a standard drop isn't that bad. Not sure what else it will do without a radio hit or something else pushing it though.

John Mayer, MercyMe, Slash, Sara Bareilles On Course for Top 10 on Billboard 200
May 25, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
John Mayer seems far and way the likely next act to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as his "Born and Raised" set should easily debut atop the list next week. Industry prognosticators suggest the album will sell between 230,000 and 250,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on May 27.
The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of May 30.
As for the rest of the top 10 next week, Christian band MercyMe seems on course for its second top 10 album, as "The Hurt & the Healer" could sell perhaps 30,000 to 50,000 copies. The act's last studio set, 2010's "The Generous Mr. Lovewell," debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 88,000 sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Guitar god Slash may be in line for the third-highest bow, with "Apocalyptic Love" (featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators). It seems likely to sell 30,000 to 40,000 copies. Singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles' new five-song EP, "Once Upon Another Time," could start in the top 10 as well with somewhere around 30,000 copies.
On Nielsen SoundScan's Building chart (below), Mayer is No. 1 while Adele's "21" stands at No. 2. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking, reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. Bareilles is at No. 3, Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" is in fourth place and Slash is No. 5.
One Direction's "Up All Night" is No. 6, followed by Lionel Richie's "Tuskegee," Kimbra's new "Vows" album and the "Now 42" compilation at Nos. 7-9, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 is the "Glee, the Music: Season 3 -- The Graduation Album" at No. 10. Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart Rank LW
BB 200 Artist Title
1 NEW John Mayer "Born and Raised" 2 2 Adele "21" 3 NEW Sara Bareilles "Once Upon Another Time" 4 3 Carrie Underwood "Blown Away" 5 NEW Slash "Apocalyptic Love" 6 10 One Direction "Up All Night" 7 9 Lionel Richie "Tuskegee" 8 NEW Kimbra "Vows" 9 6 Various Artists "Now 42" 10 8 Soundtrack "Glee, the Music: Season 3 - The Graduation Album"
The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.
I'd like Kimbra to reach the top 10 but she'll probably just make #11.

And the Building chart weirdly doesn't include albums sold at Christian outlets. And Sara Bareilles must be frontloaded, I guess.

Carrie's album is holding on beautifully.
Good for John Mayer for opening at number one.

^ How do you mean? The Building Chart shows the rank of the Billboard 200 after the first four days, but ranks always change with the remaining three days. Catalog Albums and sales at Christian stores are excluded from the Building Chart, but are, of course, factored in fairly for the Billboard 200.

Usher will be the next album to debut at #1 so we have 2 weeks where #1 will be up for grabs. Regina Spektor PLEASE. I would die.

No, these numbers are predictions based on sales trends of the week so far. They make initial predications after the first sales day (Monday), and then more specific predictions halfway through the week (Wednesday). As of Wednesday, HITS predicts Carrie to place #3 with sales between 50-55k.

Has anyone else noticed that no album released in more than six months has reached one million in sales yet? Several of them will almost definitely do it, but in the meantime nothing since Take Care is platinum yet. Isn't that crazy?

It doesn't surprise me. Now that Adele is starting to drop, it will become more evident how little (most) albums are selling these days.

I'm thinking John would have to take a major plunge in his second week for that to happen though. Regina's opening week sales will surely be lower than those of Far, which was coming off of the surprise success of Begin to Hope. And although John doesn't have a hit on his hands and can't do promo, his album should hold up well enough to block Regina.

^ You're right. Though far managed to sell 265k in total, setting up for about a 35k debut for regina (maybe I'm being optimistic, though). So she'll at least get a second straight top 10 album.

Curious to see how the next couple of weeks on the chart will unfold since we don't have another odds-on #1 release coming our way (until Usher). I'm thinking John should be able to snag a second week at the top for next week, but the week after could look like a battle between him, Adele, and maybe even Carrie.
What's the promo looking like for John Mayer and Adele in the next couple of weeks? I know Carrie has the CMT Music Awards and the CMA Festival, which will surely help her out in maintaining a strong position on the chart.

John's promo is pretty much done. He can't perform anyway, so he's basically relying on word of mouth to sell the album for now.

Few new albums top 1m anymore. Consider this- other than 21, there have been only three new albums (Born This Way, The Carter IV, Michael Buble's Christmas) to top 2 million in sales, correct? That's the nature of the biz nowadays.

^ Yea. That's sad. Platinum is like the new gold status, 2x platinum is like the new 5x platinum.

Isn't it strange to think that the last album to hit 3x-plat is at 9.2-million?

To think that sales are that disappointing is pretty freaky, actually. Adele is one hell of an exception, and could be one of the last ones to be of that herald. John's promo is pretty much done. He can't perform anyway, so he's basically relying on word of mouth to sell the album for now. Hmmm, then maybe the next two weeks will be a real tough toss-up, and we may even see Adele return to #1 again if John has a hefty drop. Didn't his last album have a pretty big drop from #1? Battle Studies went from the top to #13, I believe? Just going by what I can try to remember. Still, it sounds like next week will be a John/Adele/Carrie battle, and if John has a large drop after this week, then the following week could be Adele/Carrie once again.

Yeah, but the week he fell to #13 was Black Friday week (the one where SuBo, Gaga (TFM), Lambert, Rihanna (Rated R), etc were all released). I would expect the normal 60-70% second week drop, which is around 70k-ish, which should be enough to still be #1.

^13 MAYER*JOHN BATTLE STUDIES 92,153 -68% 285,548 377,883
John fell to #13 due to Thanksgiving week sales.
-68% isn't bad.
If John falls 70% next week, it would be ~75k.

Several of them will almost definitely do it, but in the meantime nothing since Take Care is platinum yet. Isn't that crazy? I personally love looking at the YTD sales where Adele has already sold solidly over 3 million while the next biggest selling album hasn't touched 800K yet and that isn't even a new album (Whitney). Such a discrepancy.

This week though, if we were able to update it, you would see Lionel Richie at #2
