MAYER IS MAJOR ON NEXT WEEK’S CHART
Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist’s New Album Set to Debut with 225-250k
May 23, 2012
Columbia Records social media maven and swoon-worthy rock star John Mayer will easily debut at #1 on next week’s chart with his new, critically acclaimed Born and Raised album. Based on one-day sales from those retailers who haven’t packed it up for the Memorial Day weekend show that the release will sell between 225-250k in first-week sales. It’s his first new studio effort since Battle Studies, which moved 286k units back in Nov. 2009.The new disc is being praised for its winning throwback to the vintage Laurel Canyon sound of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
Veteran Dove Award-winning Fair Trade/Columbia Christian act MercyMe’s The Hurt & the Healer should debut with 35-45k in sales.
Dik Hayd/EMI Label Services rock guitar god Slash’s Apocalyptic Love is aiming for sales of 30-35k after his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Guns N’ Roses.
Epic songstress Sara Bareilles’ five-song EP, Once Upon Another Time, is looking at a similar total of 30-35k for a release that has been in iTunes’ Top 10 this week.
Warner Bros. New Zealand performer Kimbra, now known for her vocals in Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” is looking at 20-25k for her label debut, Vows, already Top 5 in Australia and her native country.
19/Interscope Idol contestant Haley Reinhart emerges with her well-received debut, Listen Up!, which is on target for 15-20k.
Eighth season Idol winner Kris Allen’s 19/RCA sophomore album, Thank You Camellia, is looking at 15-20k as well after his debut scored 80k out of the box in Nov. ‘09. It’s interesting to note, the contestant he defeated, Adam Lambert, entered at #1 last week with his second album, Trespassing, generating sales of 77k.
Album sales were down 9% vs. last week, down 6% vs. same week last year and down 1.5% year to date.
Track sales were flat vs. last week, up 3% vs. same week last year and up 7% year to date.
TEA sales were down 6% vs. last week, down 3% vs. same week last year and up 1% year to date.

Good for John Mayer. No real hit off this album and he may only drop 25k from his last album which was two and a half years ago and had November sales to back it up.
Expected but low for Kris. I'm thinking he'll be dropped after this album. I hope they can make something out of Haley's album, it's fantastic.

yikes for kris. thought he'd be able to do at least 30k. looks like he'll be dropped if he can't get a hit from this album.

Strong debut for John Mayer considering his last album had a mixed reception from fans + he hasn't been able to perform due to his throat condition.

Very strong numbers for John, especially since his last album was released in November and opened to similar numbers.
Sad but expected for Kris.

Great numbers for John. I miss seeing him out there promoting and his songs being on radio though. I hope he gets well soon. Is he better yet?

I'm surprised that John Mayer is opening so well. That's great for him, though. The album is actually really good, too, though not very radio friendly.

John Mayer's album doesn't need pop hits to sustain long-term

So happy for Mayer. He's an icon now. lol
I expected Kris to sell 25k, Adam 50k, I'm wrong on both lol.

Born And Raised is really good indeed I think "Shadow Days" could have performed better, it seemed radio friendly to me. "Queen of California" sounds radio friendly don't you think ?

^I think Kris has the stronger album on his hands, but yeah, commercially it isn't looking good for him. But that was to be expected after Kris' debut only sold a little more than one third of what Adam's debut shifted.

No shock at all with John Mayer selling. Sometimes I wonder about people and there predictions here lol If you followed recent trends, you'd be able to predict this. My current guess before reading the thread had him at 230k and looks like I was right on track. :)

The people here aren't really up on recent trends when it comes to male acts.

John Mayer Going for Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart
May 23, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
John Mayer's new album "Born and Raised" is heading for No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart next week. Industry sources suggest it could sell around 220,000 to 240,000 copies by week's end on Sunday, May 27. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, May 30.
If the album starts atop the list, it will mark his third leader on the chart. The ailing singer also hit No. 1 with 2003's "Heavier Things" and 2009's "Battle Studies." (Mayer has a throat condition called granuloma which prevents him from singing, and he canceled a planned spring tour earlier this year.)
"Battle Studies" bowed with 289,000 in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan, while "Heavier Things" launched with 317,000. He released another solo studio album between those sets, 2006's "Continuum," which entered at No. 2 off a 300,000 start.
Other albums looking to make a high entry on the chart next week include MercyMe's "The Hurt & the Healer," Sara Bareilles' EP "Once Upon Another Time," Slash's "Apocalyptic Love" (featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators) and Kimbra's "Vows."
Two former "American Idol" finalists are set to arrive on the tally next week as well. 2009 winner Kris Allen will likely see his sophomore album "Thank You Camellia" bow in the top 20. Last year's third-place finisher, Haley Reinhart, is on course for a top 20 debut as well with her debut set, "Listen Up."

^I think Kris has the stronger album on his hands I completely disagree with this. From a purely musical standpoint they're incomparable IMO. It would be like debating Lady Gaga vs. Sara Bareilles (and to continue with that comparison, we know which one is the bigger seller, which is a matter of chosen genre and marketing, not quality). I think, objectively speaking, both Adam and Kris did an equally good - nay, great - job on their albums. Cohesive, well-written, heavy artist involvement, etc. Subjectively speaking, I don't like the first 8 tracks on Trespassing (so...all of the uptempo/dance stuff basically) but it's not like it's bad by any means, it's just not what I'm in the mood for these days. Mainly I feared this week's projections only b/c it drags up the beyond-tired Kris-vs.-Adam debate again and truly, the only people who care are Adam fans who still have a chip on their collective shoulder and need to gloat - not all Adam fans have that issue, obviously, but there are so many flop artists out there that it just bugs when people feel like they need to gang up on one.

Honestly, I think except for a few Adam/Kris fans most have moved on. I'm not seeing any gloating or ganging up on Kris. ??? It's been 3 yrs. One needs to get over that Adam didn't win even though he was treated as a co-winner and the other that Adam stole his win and spotlight and Kris winning Idol should take precedent before anything.

^I gotta get away from those few then b/c sometimes it feels like many, lol. (I should clarify I didn't mean to say it's much of an issue here, but I still lurk some old haunts and give myself unnecessary grief in the process.)
I agree with you on the flip side of the coin too; there are definitely some bitter Kris fans and though that bitterness seems to mainly come out only when Adam fans poke at them and put them on the defensive, the target of their bitterness can be misdirected. They should be mad at the label and/or management for not promoting Kris properly, not for promoting another Idol. It's not an either/or situation to me, but but every season people insist on thinking of it that way.

Maybe it's me, but I've actually seen more adam haters than any idol haters in most places including this one. then I rarely go to idol boards which may be complete another story.

I probably phrased that poorly. I personally enjoy Kris' album more but yes both albums are trying to achieve different things. And I actually preferred Adam's debut over Kris' so I'm not biased or anything.

Kris was destined to flop. He's the epitome of mediocrity.
