Try 49 adds this week, not 34. :) AllAccess doesn't let you view adds til 3 pacific, 6 eastern. I figured that meant that when you could view them all adds were in. Apparently not lol. I'll just wait for the email from now on lol.

This sounds like some washed down Cobra Starship.
I don't get the hype. It's bland and super-generic.

I don't get the hype. It's bland and super-generic. Some would say that's the key to a #1 song on pop.

Owl City needs to thank Carly Rae for being on this record. Despite her small part, I think it's her name that has created most of the hype.

Would this song have even cracked the top 50 already if it were just an Owl City record? No, and I say that as a huge Owl City fan. Alligator Sky, Deer In The Headlights, and Shooting Star all could have been top fifty songs if they were released by an act less polemic than Owl City.

I think what is giving this song such an explosive debut is the curiosity factor. Carly Rae is hot right now but essentially had one-hit-wonder written over her while Owl City had the same written over him in permanent marker. Seeing two recognizable-for-one-song names collaborating on one song is intriguing. I'd say more people were just more curious to see what Carly Rae sounded like outside of CMM. It just helps that the song is damn catchy.

^^ I really don't think the Owl City name gave this any hype. It was all Carly Rae Jepsen. If her second single was with anyone else (okay, maybe not Nicole Sher.), or alone, she'd still have the hype. It helps that this song is super catchy.

The last posted gold songs update was a few weeks ago...
116 112 OWL CITY Fireflies 100 88 12 0.313
Barely any spins and audience. I don't think Owl City's hype contributed at all.

Not sure what you mean by "polemic", but I agree that OC should have had more hits. "Vanilla Twilight" is one of my favorite songs of the past couple of years yet wasn't a major hit, and nothing since, until now, has improved on that chartwise, to the point that even "Fireflies" looks almost like a novelty/fluke hit in retrospect. I like "Call Me Maybe", though I'm increasingly tired of it, but we should at least give Carly credit for rescuing Owl City from the one hit wonder bin.

If her second single was with anyone else (okay, maybe not Nicole Sher.), or alone, she'd still have the hype. It helps that this song is super catchy. If that's the case then a song like Curiosity would have gotten the same immediate response. I think people were curious to see what a song with some random like Owl City would sound like. I think it was mostly Carly Rae's name that gave the song attention but I think another name like Owl City definitely added to the intrigue-factor, though really, it could have been nearly anyone else. Carly Rae and LMFAO, Carly Rae and Cee Lo, etc. The last posted gold songs update was a few weeks ago... 116 112 OWL CITY Fireflies 100 88 12 0.313 Barely any spins and audience. I don't think Owl City's hype contributed at all. It's not really about hype or how much recurrent airplay someone has that decides whether or not someone can get a hit. If Fallout Boy and Carly Rae did a song together, people would be curious to see what it would sound like. Fallout Boy, like Owl City, have an image and are recognizable. They'd definitely both flop with their own respective singles but in combination with a new act like Carly Rae or even someone like Gotye, it would produce its own hype. Then it just depends on whether the song itself is good enough to maintain it.

Curiosity was not released as a single in the US, so I don't see how your point is valid? Plus, it's doing well in her native Canada, peaking at #20 so far on the CAN HOT 100, is #7 on CAN HOT AC, top 15 at CHR Pop, all still rising. She shot a video for it, and it hasn't been released yet either, so it's still bound to move up. So, I'd actually argue the exact opposite of what you were trying to point out. Also, Good Time is the catchier song. If Curiosity, for example, featured Owl City, I don't think it would blow up as fast as Good Time is, or, in other words, it's not the fact that Owl City's name is on the track, it's that it's a catchier song.

Catchier songs fail to do well all the time. It still needs people to take notice in it to even hear it first. Before there was any word of a collaboration at all, people were already dubbing Carly a likely one-hit-wonder in the US. Then when this song was announced, there were articles in many of the music blogs and websites I follow making mention of Carly Rae and Owl City. If Curiosity, or even a newly recorded solo song were the followup, I guarantee it wouldn't have gotten as much attention. I'm not saying it's Owl City specifically that got the song the attention but just the fact that it was someone else to add intrigue to it. It's amazing marketing and planning on behalf of both artists and their respective images. (I'd hope I know since my current school focus is public relations with an emphasis on marketing and public image).
Anyway, we're going to have to agree to disagree.

This song is infectious but I can't stand his voice. It's like he always has a cold or something

Well if this song becomes big, I see no reason why her 3rd single wouldn't get big reception out of the gate.

Pop nearly top 20!! Should make #21 in 2 or 3 days. #20 and #19 are both losing over 100 spins but are about 1000 spins away so a few days for those as well. Should be top 20 for the Sunday update! AND Carly Rae is 380 spins away from #1 (she's gaining, M5 is losing), down from 440 spins apart! Would be great if she got #1 again haha AND they are top 50 HAC! Pop22 +2 OWL CITY & CARLY RAE... Good Time 3200 +140 1350 -142 22.430 +0.444 +140 spins -142 bullet +0.444 audience HAC42 -- OWL CITY & CARLY RAE... Good Time 287 -- 140 -- 1.398 --

I was talking more about the hype and buzz. I was going to make a post yesterday, but the thread had already fallen to the middle of page 2. Even the daily updates stopped. So that's why I asked that question.
