I wouldn't be surprised if this was a very successful venture. I wouldn't be surprised if it amounted to nothing either.

Katy Perry is making a record label! :O I don't know how that will turn out. I feel like she will be too much of a softie to tell people no, since she was dropped from multiple labels before settling with Capitol. Same thing if Gaga was to make one.

Katy preparing to take over the music industry :)
I can see this producing so huge stars or flopping harder than Oprah's own network....but I give her credit for trying and for wanting to stick up for her artists.

Who does she think she is, the Beatles?
First she's on the same record label as them, and now she's launching her own?
Geez, could she at least try to be original?
j/k ;)

I'd rather Katy just focus on her next album after the movie buzz, but I guess she wants to help artists that had to face the same problems as her achieve their goals.

Has there ever been any music artist who, after being very successful him- or herself, then successfully launched a successful label with multiple artists? The only one I can think of is Madonna and Maverick (and even that ended on a sour note for the founders, who were bought out 12 years later just to make the dispute with their parent label go away). Maybe a rap artist? You have some like Kanye's G.O.O.D., but I am fuzzy on how it actually operates. I can't tell if it's actually its own label which mainly takes care of its own costs or if it is just an imprint that gets most of its support from its parent labels. I'm interested in seeing how this works out for Katy but am generally expecting nothing. Nothing against her but the odds just aren't in her favor. The problem is that most artists are good at spotting other talent but lack either the proper knowledge or the steel stomach required to run the actual business. OTOH Katy may not plan on trying to actually "run" it herself but only to act as A&R/advisor. That would be the safest way for her to handle it IMO.

Thanks! I did not know that about Frank. I did know about Prince but I forget sometimes that he had any success with it b/c he's launched as many (or more) failures.

Its a mistake to make ur own label specially in this current climate of horrible sales. There is no way u going to compete against the marketing muscle of 800lbs gorillas. unless u have a indie setup with minimal cost but success is always going to be elusive.
