AT40 turns 42. Ryan's back. The chart's a little less stagnant. Two older songs fall out. But that pesky "Party Rock Anthem" keeps hanging on.

Is it me or are they REALLY late this time?
Usually AT40 is 2-3 weeks late, but this time it seems to be more 3-4 weeks late, so many songs are way low! Want U Back, Lights and Let's Go are those which come to mind.
Anyone else think Party Rock Anthem will beat Dynamite's record?

Is it me or are they REALLY late this time? Nope, it's not just you. They've, definitely, fallen behind their "normal" schedule. I'm hoping for a big "catch-up" week, soon. If only to spice things up.

PRA is a definite threat to Dynamite. However, as Cerebro just mentioned they are overdue for a "catch-up" week, and if that week happens say 4-5 weeks from now, I can see PRA biting the bullet earlier than necessary in the process (similar to GME leaving early).

After six weeks at #11 or 12, "Boyfriend" re-enters the top 10 at #10, where it was for three weeks in May. Most likely it should permanently fall out of the top 10 next week for "Lights", which along with "Wide Awake" look like sure top 5's and maybe rivals for #1. (If "Part of Me" had hit the top, then "Wide Awake" would have the potential to be Katy's eighth #1 in a row. As it is, it should be her 11th top 5 hit in just four years.) Good choices of extras, especially "California King Bed", which was not one of Rihanna's bigger hits but one of my favorites from her; its rock-ballad style was a nice change of pace.
"Party Rock Anthem" will break "Dynamite"'s record if it's still on the October 13, 2012, countdown. If running in place and going nowhere for weeks and weeks is considered shuffling, then every day and week it's doing that, all right.
Near the end, Ryan noted AT40's 40th anniversary and played bits of the #1 songs from 40, 30, 20, and 10 years ago. They were:
1972: "Lean On Me"-Bill Withers 1982: "Rosanna"-Toto* 1992: "I'll Be There"-Mariah Carey 2002: "Without Me"-Eminem
*Toto was #1 on Radio & Records that week, not on AT40 which then used Billboard. AT40's #1 this week in 1982 was the Human League's "Don't You Want Me?"; right now I'm listening to that exact countdown.

I honestly believe they kicked out Give Me Everything because of the high amount of songs with Pitbull coming out at the time. The same week it got kicked off the chart (from #33, a rather high position), Back In Time debuted (at #37, rather high). Not mentioning International Love which was still performing pretty well. In five weeks, three songs with Pitbull debuted on the chart. I think that caused Give Me Everything to get the boot. Now, with LMFAO not really putting anything out lately (other than the flopping "Sorry For Party Rocking"), I could see them stay for an extra 10 weeks. Curiously it's still at #50 on the Billboard Hot 100 too (should get the boot next week)

Based on this chart, it is two to three weeks behind, different to the Billboard Pop Songs chart. Next week, it has to be a chart that will wow people. And I predict that PRA will stay for several weeks, while TMO, DIMC and WFL drop out the next week.

Ninth consecutive #1, actually! "Waking Up In Vegas", "California Gurls", "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "E.T.", "Last Friday Night", "The One That Got Away", "Part Of Me", and "Wide Awake".

She was featured on two Top 40 hits between "Waking" and "California." There was "Starstrukk" and "If We Ever Meet Again."

She wasn't the lead artist on those awful flops, therefore they're not her songs.

But she doesn't HAVE 9 #1s in a row so... ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif) And her two features were not flops. I like them both. :( ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif)

I thought Ryan gave Katy a week at #1 with TOTGA? Which would make it 9 #1's in a row.

Right, it only went up to #3. The extras are better spaced this week. AT40's idea of excitement is having us wonder if LMFAO will beat Taio Cruz' record. Ryan interviewed Katy Perry about her new movie and she called him a mega mogul. Hey Ya! was the last number one song that Casey Kasem played on AT40, the weekend of 1/3/'04. I believe that "drank in my cup" is the past tense of the verb "to drink in my cup." In Britney's 3 there is an odd reference to Peter, Paul, and Mary. I think it's revenge for PPM's tongue-in-cheek slap at rock music I Dig Rock and Roll Music: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCrc2E61DDk

I thought AT40 was based on actual Mediabase charts consisting of just their affiliates. Yes I know Ryan says we can "vote" for our favorite songs, but I thought their chart was based on an "in-house" Mediabase chart. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

That's why some songs stick around for a long time. Otherwise, it's rather accurate to that chart, with some minor differences. The lateness does suck, though. I once wrote them an e-mail about it and they replied it was because "Ryan has a very tight schedule and we have to pass the show through quality control and blah blah blah", yeah, right, but so does every other countdown show and AT40 is the only one this late... Anyway. I still very much enjoy listening to the show.

Anyway. I still very much enjoy listening to the show. To be fair, most other high-profile countdown hosts don't have umpteen other shows to host and other high-profile duties (E! news correspondent, producer, etc.) to take care of. As talented as Ryan is, it's not unreasonable to wonder if he's spreading himself too thin at times. As for lateness, AT40 and other major countdowns since the beginning have always been a bit behind the actual sales/airplay data; in the past they often had to wait for Billboard or R&R to process the sales figures, playlists, etc., which were often of dubious accuracy (especially until the early 90s or whenever computerised monitoring became the rule). Still, in the past they usually were consistent in the time frame for sales and airplay, whereas nowadays it seems to vary between (generally) two or three weeks from the airplay from which the chart is based to when we actually hear the countdown. I don't know the precise formula used to tabulate the chart (I wonder if even Ryan does), but it seems to almost entirely rest on airplay from Mediabase-monitored affiliates (the composition of the panel is something that could be, and on this board often is, debated.) While Ryan talks up "your votes" as if it's the main factor the voting seems to play a fairly minor role from a casual observation. One occasion I can think of where voting might have played a larger role was when "Someone Like You" was #1 on AT40 for 2 weeks but never hit that position on MB. I do wonder why they use the Mediabase with Recurrents chart and not the official one with songs purged after falling below a certain level after a certain amount of time. This has been problematic right from the start of the Seacrest era in January 2004, when several long-gone songs suddenly reappeared, and continues up to now with songs staying on for excessive amounts of time (over a year in a few cases) and blocking many Mediabase top 40 hits from ever making the countdown (which presumably would give them a lot of extra spins and thus help them up the chart.)

Because it more accurately reflects what radio stations are playing. I'm not saying I agree with it. But some of the songs from 30-40 on the published chart are a little obscure that many stations aren't playing. Program Directors in general are happy playing some songs to death while never touching others, especially since research shows that more familiar songs test more favorably. What PDs want to play and what chart fans want to hear are two different things.

Here are Katy Perry's Top 40 hits and peak postions, according to AT40: 1) I Kissed A Girl (#2) 2) Hot N Cold (#1) 3) Thinking of You (#17) 4) Waking Up In Vegas (#1) 5) Starstrukk (with 3Oh!3) (#26) 6) If We Ever Meet Again (with Timbaland) (#26) 7) California Gurls (f/Snoop Dogg) (#1) 8) Teenage Dream (#1) 9) Firework (#1) 10) E.T. (f/Kanye West) (#1) 11) Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) (#1) 12) The One That Got Away (#1) 13) Part of Me (#3) 14) Wide Awake (#14+)
