The 8th single from "Teenage Dream" is still going strong, but there is already info surfacing about Katy Perry's next album, so I think it's appropriate to start the thread for her third album now. Johnny Wujek talked about styling Katy in this new MTV article... and mentioned he heard a new song from Katy. Read the rest of the article here: style.mtv.com/2012/07/11/johnny-wujek-interview

Immense pressure for this one. Lead single is going to have incredible hype, probably in the same vein as BTW. Honestly, I hope it's dark as fuck, but still massively radio-friendly. I would love if she did something along the lines of Gang Bang. Well, that sound anyways.

She said recently that she wanted to go back to her roots with some "guitar-driven" stuff so I expect a little deeper/darker but still radio-friendly. I would think more in the vein of WA than CG or LFN.

she'll take a break, or at least radio will have a break. I don't expect anything until early next year, or maybe even late spring, kinda how CG debuted in May.

Ke$ha takes a long hiatus and people say she's irrelevant. Rihanna has released a new album every year for 7 years and still going strong. I agree with Spree new single in time for summer of next year and new album around Aug/September :)
Cannot wait. Although people are going to be soooo annoying during the new era. And god forbid a song doesn't go #1, we will never hear the end of it. I'm hoping for a next mix of TD/OOTB's <3

I say why not?
She is on a hot streak. If she can put out good music with gerat visuals, go for it.
I highly doubt the first single will follow Wide Awake. I think we may have something new (album) drop by this time next tear though.
I want artists to take the EP route. You don't want to commit to a huge album? Throw a few great tracks out there. Promote it let it sell on iTunes and leave it as that in teh interm.

Lots of people seem to think EPs are a good idea, but honestly, other than Gaga's The Fame Monster (which was attached to a full length album), have their been any EPs in recent years that are that successful? Full-length albums are still doing much better on the whole, and since Katy is an artist I love, I'd rather get a full album of 12+ songs than an EP with only 7 or 8.

She needs to take a year break. Drop the first single next May, first week. So it will be the song of the summer.
She has been going nonstop for 4 years now. She needs to take a break and have some "me" time.

A full album is it, an ep is pointless.

I think she could take a break until at least early next year and then release the first single in March/April. As much as I would love new material from her now, a short break is good. It would give us and radio a chance to miss her a little and then fall in love with her again.
The Teenage Dream era was nearly perfect from start to finish. There are so many songs that we felt could have been singles or should have been singles, but it all worked out in the end with none of the singles underperforming or flopping.

It'd be a lie if I told that I'm not anticipating her 4th album but I also don't want to see her 'underperform'. It'd be perfect if the lead single dropped in early May. It's not like we won't be hearing her on the radio until then anyway. Wide Awake will drop out of the top 20 on chr/pop by October and then there will be only 7 months of no new single in addition to the strong recurrent play all her hits will be getting.

I really hope this collaboration happens.

I agree she needs.to keep the may releases for new singles. I feel she owns summer and would hate for her to rush release for a December album release or something. 2008 - I kissed a girl 2009 - waking up in Vegas 2010 - California gurls 2011 - et and last Friday night 2012 - wide awake 2013 - 1st single off new album...owning summer for six and even seven years (2014) in a row. Legenderry knows where its at.

She needs to sit her ass down. Agreed. After a such a record breaking era, it is imperative that she rest, recoup, and prepare another number one album filled with another batch of number one singles.

So it won't be an entirely dark album. :)

So what she's saying is it's going to be like Teenage Dream and have 2 or 3 "dark" songs (NLTM, TOTGA, etc.).

Dark doesn't necessarily mean ballads or mid-tempos tho haha. :)

I was talking more about the content of the songs. NLTM is sad because nothing is turning out perfectly like you imagined it would. TOTGA is obviously about someone who got away. They're not super dark, but they're still dark.

Funny, personally I wouldn't categorize NLTM and TOTGA under dark. They're sad, both in content and music. The instrumentation is pretty soft in both songs which is probably why I don't think of them as dark. Sonically, I find that E.T. is much more dark sounding for some reason. Circle The Drain is what I would call dark too.
But what you said makes sense as well though.

They're not happy, but they're far from dark in tone. "Dark" is a tone that is rarely found in mainstream pop music, but some GaGa and Kelly's My December would be good examples.

The only song I'd consider to be remotely dark by her is Wide Awake, and even then she's only really singing about waking up from a dream.
Katy's next album will not be "dark."
