TEXTI've heard alot of rumours about Mary Conroy & the Atlantic team still releasing this one to Hot AC/and AC and if it hits Top 20 to Pop. Alot of PD's wanted this one instead of "Downfall" and I think that's why it only peaked at #28. It only had half the monitored panel on it. Does anyone know if these rumours are true? If this does go for adds as single 5 most people will just think it's single 4 anyway and it's still months til' Rob's solo cd. I think it would be a wise choice to crank out another Top 10 Hot AC smash!! The cd might have sold all it is going to sell but not much money and promotion is needed on this catchy retro-type smash!! My prediction if released: Hot AC- #1 AC- #6 Pop- #14 Hot 100- #18

I say release it! What have they got to lose? At least to Hot AC and AC while 'Bright Lights' dwindles.

It seems a bit late to release another single, even if it is being treated as a 4th single to Pop. If it's going to be released I say do it right away. This could go top 30 at Hot AC but I don't expect it do much at all at Pop. This may be a very catchy song but that doesn't count out the fact that the album is over 18 months old and especially on Pop where they haven't been high on the charts in about 6 months. I also don't see any success on AC from this, it's not the right sound.

They don't need to.
I'd love to see them with another hit, because they put out solid music, but this album has had its success.

"Downfall" should be the big red stop sign for Matchbox Twenty. Considering "Downfall" bombed, it should be an indicator that either Hot AC is not interested in the track or that Hot AC has lost interest in any new releases from this album. The topic poster seems a little too confident that "All I Need" will completely turn this around. I doubt it will do that well at all. There's no reason why it would do better than "Downfall". It would just add to their burnout factor at Hot AC which could damage their longevity and Rob Thomas's solo career.

I agree. I thought Downfall would do better on HotAC than it did so I certainly wouldn't go with a 5th song. I really like All I Need but I also liked Downfall. But the big thing is GIVE A BREAK TO RADIO. If Rob's going to release his solo CD before Christmas (which is what he recently said during an interview at the Kentucky Derby), then his first single will come out by late Sept early Oct. He needs more of a break than that. The ONLY reason I could see to release All I Need would be to help promote their new DVD which comes out next Tuesday.

It's not my favorite song, but I know a lot of people who REALLY like it.Β I remember Billboard's review of Bright Lights gave a mention to All I Need as definite future single material from MTYTYA.Β I never liked how derivitive it was.Β Always reminds me of Travelling Wilburys.Β Hasn't this been released as a single in Australia?Β Wonder how it's doing down under.Β

I've been programming hit music for years and I've hardly ever been wrong on a song! When "Downfall" was released instead of "All I Need", I was very shocked. "Downfall" to me was the most un-radio friendly song Matchbox Twenty ever recorded. I knew it would go nowhere. It's actually a success in the fact it made it to #28. Everyone said when "Disease" went to #21 at Pop and #4 at Hot AC that "Unwell" wouldn't do anything and it ended up being the #2 song of 2003 across all formats. A good song will always find the light of day and this is a good song. Everytime I've played it people love it,especially the older demo. It may not be hip,but who knows how too be as smooth as Rob Thomas. This could be for the DVD or it may never go for adds, but if it does mark my words it will go Top 10 at Hot AC easy and unless Atlantic just drops promotion on it I see a Top 3,even #1. It should have been released 3 months ago. I think it went to like #46 at Hot Ac with only 3 stations on it a while back,it took almost 50 to get "Downfall" into the To 30. I know a hit song and this is better than "Downfall" by a longshot. Now "Downfall" will have probably hurt it's peak in some ways, but in the end this will be their biggest 4th,5th hit off a cd since "Back 2 Good". "Last Beautiful Girl" deserved to go #19, as did "Downfall" #28. Ask any Hot AC P.D. and they'll tell you Matchbox Twenty are the bread and butter of Hot Ac and #1 core artist. They aren't fading and were not tired of playing them, JUST A BAD SINGLE CHOICE FROM ATLANTIC ON DOWNFALL. That's why record companies are losing money!! TEXT

TEXT Very interesting.Β Thanks for the insight.Β I'm wondering why not release another single if it has any chance of being successful.Β Is it just that Rob's solo CD is in the on-deck circle and people don't want All I Need to hurt Rob's firstΒ single?Β I've always wondered about singles that are released more than a year after the album is released.Β Does the fact that a band isn't currently touring and making a video affect whether PD's pick up a song?Β Also, what's the thinking on how much time should elapse between single releases.Β I remember people saying that they released Bright Lights way too soon sinceΒ Unwell was still going strong.Β

I would have loved if All I Need was released, however, DO NOT RELEASE IT NOW. Rob Thomas needs to cool down a little bit before he releases his solo project around Christmas, the more the people wait, the more hungrier they will be for new material.
OH YEAH, ALL ROB THOMAS FANS VOTE FOR HIM THIS WEEK IN THE POLLING BOOTH AT PULSE SUPERSTAR IDOL, HE'S TRAILING BEHIND BUMS SUCH AS STING.

I think this song had a higher peak than "Disease" on the Australian sales charts, but only made it to about #30 or so. They released it with a live video just like "Bright Lights" in Oz.

Also:
I think Atlantic wanted to promote this one as an exclusive release to Australia, i saw that mentioned in a review of the song. Their label probably wanted to do something special for the fans in Australia because More Than You Think You Are has actually sold MORE than Mad Season down there. There is even a petition to get them to unite for another Australian tour later this year that has a lot of support from radio stations down there.
PS: Since you are a radio programmer, how do you feel "Rest Stop" would have done as the 4th release from Mad Season as opposed to "Last Beautiful Girl" (i thought LBG was a surefire hit...)

I think "Rest Stop" was a wonderful well written song and I always thought it would have made for a great video. However I'm not sure anything left on Mad Season would have outpeaked "Last Beautiful Girl" or not. I remember back then Atlantic almost going with "Black & White People" instead of "Bent" as the lead off single, so it may have been able to go Top 10 at Hot AC and into the Top 30 at Pop maybe. I think "Rest Stop" would have done fairly well, but I always loved the lyrics in "Last Beautiful Girl". I think no video and the fact that the chorus is better at the end, the first 2 chorus' just need Rob to break out more like he's known to do. I was kind of suprised it didn't go a little higher myself. I also used to think "Leave" would have made a great single, especially if you speed it up just a little bit. But all in all I think Atlantic has made the right single choices for Matchbox up until "Downfall". They could have went Top 10 at Hot AC with "Cold", "All I Need", "The Difference", or "Hand Me Down", anything but "Downfall". Sometimes I think they didn't want this 4th released to blow up and hang around the Top 20 for months like "Unwell" & "Bright Lights" did just in case Rob does get a single out to radio by Fall.

Thank you Ultra for your input. Agreed with what you said. Just read on the MB20 boards that Rob MIGHT be doing a solo tour this summer. I'm shocked if that is true but delighted at the same time.
