This is the next single. I really have to say that this may very possibly be my favorite release from "More Than You Think You Are".

That's incredible! :) I never would have expected them to release that as a single unless "More Than You Think You Are" went more than four singles through. This has to be one of their best releases yet.
This single at least SHOULD do well, but is it perhaps too idiosyncratic for radio? Would the New York Gospel portion of the song throw some off, or will it work and seduce the listeners?
Being a fourth single, I don't expect "Downfall" to dominate, but being a fan favorite, this could definitely bring a fourth consecutive Top 20 Hot AC hit from this album.
Wow, I am suprised they chose "Downfall" over "All I Need" but am quite pleased with this release.
My Prediction: #11
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

OMG, no way! This is going to be a risk but I hope that this pays off. Hopefully this will show everyone that the band knows how to change it up a bit. PS: Where did you get this info from?

Apparently on the matchbox twenty official site's forum, fans seem sure "All I Need" is the new single, but there have been no official confirmations that is true yet there. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Wow, I love Downfall. My favorite track on the album. It will either be a big hit or a bomb. I honestly think that All I Need was more radio-friendly, though.

I'm not sure which song this is. Track 5? I was really looking forward to 'All I Need' but I'll give this one a chance too since all indication point toward it being a 5-star song. However, I've already given 'All I Need' the single treatment personally so now I have to backtrack a bit.
Edit: Just looked at the tracklisting at hmv.com (who always have the correct order of songs) and it seems like they're off... at least from my version of the album. Here's what they have: 1. Bright Lights 2. Cold 3. Could I Be You 4. Disease 5. Downfall 6. Feel 7. Soul 8. Unwell 9. Hand Me Down 10. All I Need 11. The Difference 12. You're So Real
However, I went to towerrecords.com and they have, from what I remember passed the first 6 tracks, the correct track listing compared to my CD.
1. Feel / Matchbox Twenty 2. Disease (Album Version) / Matchbox Twenty 3. Bright Lights / Matchbox Twenty 4. Unwell / Matchbox Twenty 5. Cold / Matchbox Twenty 6. All I Need / Matchbox Twenty 7. Hand Me Down / Matchbox Twenty 8. Could I Be You / Matchbox Twenty 9. Downfell / Matchbox Twenty 10. Soul / Matchbox Twenty 11. You're So Real / Matchbox Twenty 12. Difference / Matchbox Twenty 13. So Sad, So Lonely (Hidden Track) / Matchbox Twenty
I don't know if mine has the hidden track though.

The second version of the listing is how it goes on my CD. The first one might be an import or Canadian version though.

WOW, this one is a shocker! I really like this song, its one of my favorites off of a great album, but I have to question how it will do at radio.
I guess it won't do much worse on HotAC than 'Last Beautiful Girl'...
It is interesting that they are going with 'All I Need' in Australia (where MTYTYA is 4x platinum--the same as mad season) while they picked 'Downfall' here....

Also, did 'Last Beautiful Girl' make the top 20? I'm pretty sure it hit #20 on the Billboard chart....
If so, if "Downfall" made the top 20, would that be twelve straight for the band? I know there aren't any official records on this type of stuff, but it surely would be a record (if they don't already hold it...).

If it's the Hot 100, no, they definitely did not hit the Top 20.

I guess the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart, which they no longer give you the Top 20 for free so if it peaks in the 19-22 range on R&R we may not know if it went Top 20 on Billboard.

Wow, that is really surprising. Doesn't sound like a "radio" song. But I know a lot of people love it. Question: do you think they will alter it at all for radio? Not sure how long it is.

Maybe I am the only one but this song does nothing for me I wish they would've released "All I Need"

I know a lot of people like All I Need for a single. But, personally, I really don't like it. If I skip any song on the album, it is that one. Too poppy for my taste. Matchbox always gets slammed for being too lite and I think that song emphasizes that impression. It has grown on me over time, but still my least favorite song on MTYTYA.

'Downfall' is alright but I don't see it doing anywhere near as well as the other singles from the CD. I dunno. It's probably the least radio-friendly track on the album. I'll give it a few more listens though but I woulda prefered 'All I Need' or 'Cold' or 'Hand Me Down'. There's no intro to this song either but I kinda think it would need one.

This was a standout song when I first heard the album, but definetly not a standout single! I really don't want this to be released because I think it will flop hard for some reason. I rather have "Cold" or "The Difference" released. I think "Downfall" should just be for the real fans of Matchbox Twenty who own the album.

And yes, every single that the band has released has at least gone top 20. In fact, their only non-top 10 on Hot AC was "Last Beautiful Girl".

I added to my playlist and I have been listening to it for a couple of days and I am really getting into it. It's probably my least favorite single from MTYTYA but it is a pretty solid song.

It will be interesting to see how this does. I'm thinking they won't have any more real hits off this album, but they don't really need anymore either. I think if they win a grammy, they'll get a boost in sales anyway.

It is rumored that Rob will start working on his solo album in the next few months with a possible 2004 release date. I doubt that Atlantic will promote Downfall much. If it takes off, great, if not, not a tragedy. The album has sold more than 3 million worldwide which is very good for a veteran artist who has lost their teenage fanbase for the most part and also lost rock/alternative radio airplay.

Absolutely right. How often do you see rock artists coming on veteran status capable of earning double platinum or above certifications on albums nowadays? In the past year, there have been few who've managed this like matchbox twenty. Not even Alanis Morissette or Hootie & The Blowfish, who hold records in debut album sales, were able to go multi-platinum their third albums, but matchbox twenty did it! They are victorious and with a hat trick of multi-platinum efforts they will be a band to remember no matter what happens from here. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

You look at POP artists like Ms. Spears who have consecutively had 10 million album sales, YET FAIL to have #1 singles. I am finding that artists who don't sell a ton of albums, do better single-wise. I am also going to say that MB20 may be a "woosie" band to many, but what they produce is great, quality, pleasurful music, that spans over generations.

Anyone know when we should expect to hear Downfall on the radio?
Also, I saw that Rob Thomas posted this message on the MB20 board. Interesting peak into his mental state as he works on his solo album:
ROB POST: hey you guys. i hope that everyone has been doing well since we've last seen each other. i'm back home after all of the grammy fun. i just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all of the birthday wishes. let's see.....i'm working on songs for my solo record. i'm so far very happy, but i'm sure there's time for me to throw myself into a fit of depression and curl up in a ball on the floor and scream "go away" to myself for a while. i'm working on getting a web-site together for my new album to keep y'all posted, so keep an eye out. mari is working on getting a web-site for our foundation, SIDEWALK ANGELS, and we hope to be able to pull together some kind of benefit in the coming year. oh yeah, mari IS NOT PREGNANT. but i'm sure she appreciates all the good wishes. (remember, sometimes we read this stuff too.) anyway, to all of you who were at the last show, thanks. that was a big night for all of us and i assure you we will all be together again before we know it. life is funny that way. way too fast. slow down. have fun. damn the man. rob.

I believe "Downfall" went for adds a week or two ago, it will probably take a little while to get airplay though, with still 2 songs in the top 15.

I never saw it on fmqb's list, not that they always list it, was it on radioandrecords list? I'm actually wondering if they are actually even going to send and/or support this song. My guess is that the song will do next to nothing, and the record company won't care. I'm thinking no more singles, Bright Lights was the last one.
