I heard it during the San Diego game, that's pretty cool and it fits in well. I remember "Have a Nice Day" by Bon Jovi was popular in the stadiums back in 2005.

I don't understand how this song ties into football. I can understand "This is How a Heart Breaks" being played during clips of big tackles. But "let's see how far we've come" just doesn't have the "we will rock you" sentiment.

You can look to "see how far" a team has come- it was kinda fitting (for me at least) when they were showing highlights on LaDanian Tomlinson (who I don't like, BTW).
I remember "This is How a Heart Breaks" was the theme song for the 2005 NBA playoffs, and I think for some soccer thing as well.

August : Ryan Seacrest said that How Far We've Come broke the record for the biggest jump ever on America's Top 40, jumping 27 spots to #8 in 1 week! This Week: HFWC jumps from #93 to #12 on the Billboard Hot 100!! Must be some sort of record! Go Matchbox!! 12 93 matchbox twenty How Far We've Come DIGITAL| Atlantic Peak:12 Wks On:2 Funny!! Just received a Google Alert about this - posted by Billboard: "Back on the big chart, the appropriately titled "How Far We've Come" from matchbox twenty flies up 81 spots, 93-12, after its digital release, becoming the second-biggest jump of 2007 behind the 91-spot leap of Beyonce & Shakira's "Beautiful Liar." www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003639925

Looks like this song has peaked on HotAC. I'm somewhat surprised but not totally that it didn't go higher. However, this band has been gone awhile, the format has changed (many pop leaning HotACs didn't really support this song), and it's a different sound for them. The thing that hurts MB20 isn't so much that pop doesn't play them, it's that alternative doesn't. However, IT is still all about the music, and I really just have a lot of respect for this band. They will surely be releasing the ballad These Hard Times at some point. I would expect about the same peak for it on HotAC. It has the potential to be a huge song on AC and will probably get about 20-30 stations playing it on pop. It's a lovely song and Rob has never sounded better. BTW, HFWC is #1 on Rate The Music this week. I don't think this survey means much anymore as it tends to favor artists with larger on-line fanbases particularly the AI kids. But congrats to MB20 anyway.

I think this is doing extermely well. I hear it all the time in DC. If it peaks at #5 on HotAC that isn't so bad, especially since it's still climbing the charts at Pop. I think this is already a pretty successful song for them.

Yeah I completely agree - esp. cause the I-tunes downloads are so high...Matchbox 20 easily could've put out another single that could've done better on Hot AC but IMO their big challenge was to get back on CHR and Triple A (and even some Alternative stations) which Rob Thomas was basically unable to do (with one exception) on his last CD Not sure if I'm sayin this right but Matchbox 20 is now an "active" rather than a "passive" band again

I've listened to the six new songs. Quite a departure in sound for them. I think I like it. I give them a HUGE amount of credit for attempting something different. People will either embrace it or they won't but you don't know until you try it. They certainly don't sound like Nickleback or Daughtry so I think they'll be searching to find a radio home for their songs except for These Hard Times. That sounds like a ballad that they could have had on any of their previous two albums. I think the fact that people are buying HFWC may bode well for the future of this band.

I guess by "passive" I meant a band that people listen to on AC and Hot AC stations and like as background music, but which people don't actively download tons of songs and buy tons of CDs - I think "Unwell" and "Bright Lights" were pretty much passive hits for Matchbox Twenty (CHR stations played "Unwell" to balance out the mix in between R&B songs), and the Goo Goo Dolls have been a "passive" band probably since 1999 (although they're one of my favorites)

Oh, well then I agree with that. Can a "passive" band still dominate the Hot AC chart in your opinion?

Oh IMO definitely - but it's pretty safe to say that if a rock band is actively selling tons of CDs and/or having big hits downloaded that they'll also be played at CHR, Alternative, or Triple A Many markets don't have Hot ACs, so if a song is only doing well on Hot AC, I think it's pretty safe to say that it's a "passive" hit that people like hearing, but aren't jumpin up and gettin really excited about Some good examples of "passive" hits I guess would be "Give A Little Bit" by the Goo Goo Dolls, "Calling All Angels" by Train, and "Ever The Same" by Rob Thomas

In turn, they will not be as successful as Nickelback and Daughtry in the future. I'm sure you're right. MB20 has had their time in the spotlight and they are apparently moving on to whatever the future brings for them. It eventually happens to all artists. You can't stay at the top forever. To me MB20 is a far more interesting band than Daughtry or Nickleback but that is certainly a matter of personal choice.

Listening to the new songs reminds me of how much I miss this band. I'd normally balk at buying an album for 6 songs, but I find myself happy to support these guys. They are sentimental favorites for me -- one of my favorite bands ever. Of the new songs, "How Far We've Come" and "These Hard Times" are the standout tracks for me, with "If I Fall" probably my third favorite. I like the other songs, though I don't consider them mb20's best -- but we'll see if they grow on me with more listens. I hope some retailer offers some interesting bonus tracks.

I think this single is doing MUCH better than I thought it would. I knew they'd have a strong first week in terms of digital downloads, but I actually thought the single would slide 3-8 the second week, then something along the line of 8-15 the following week. But the single is still in the Top 5 there, which I think is really telling and shows many are enthused here. In terms of airplay markets, perhaps, the single is "passive", but it's NOT because people don't want to hear them; it's rather because musical trendlines evolve and Hot AC Sincerely, Noah Eaton

(MB first two albums sold more than all of Nickleback combined to date) and now with EOM - and talk of a 'all new' release in 2008 - I think Matchbox will continue to be a HUGE success in spite of their 'Exile on Mainstream'! Definitely - 'active' - and with this new sound they will pull in an even broader fan base added to the die hard fans that will stick with them forever!!

up to #11 on the Hot 100. Its unfair that its #3 in the sales chart but stupid airplay makes them so low :( I was happy when Billboard changed the rules for the Hot100 and increased the emphasis on airplay rather than downloads. LOL! I guess I should have thought twice about that. I personally think that #11 is quite an accomplishment for the band. Of course, I would be happy if they can sneak into the top 10 as none of the other 5 new songs will have as many downloads (once the album is out). My favorite is Can't Let Me Go. Is that an organ in the wierd part of the song? It took me a few listens but I love this part of the song. It reminds me of something the Beatles would do. Love it!This song is so unique and Rob's vocals are so good here. As much as I respect Rob as a songwriter even I have to admit that he can vocally take just an okay song and really turn it into a winner. He's very underappreciated as a vocalist. I'm really excited with the direction the band has taken.

But your final paragraph reminded me of an interview with Rob where he said that he's not a singer, he's a songwriter. I was pretty astounded at that answer considering he's got such a distinctive, beautiful voice. He can do it all - rock with the best of them and then sing sweet little ballads. He is such a versatile vocalist.

Man, I am really kind of surprised that "All Your Reasons" isn't getting more love from everyone. I think that is one of my new all time favorites from MB20. Most of the hardcore fans seem to say that "These Hard Times" is their favorite from the new songs -- but I prefer "All Your Reasons" and "I'll Believe You When" over "These Hard Times" by far. The distinctive background vocals in AYR seem to turn a lot of people off, but I think they are great.

up to #11 on the Hot 100. Its unfair that its #3 in the sales chart but stupid airplay makes them so low :( I have a feeling that, on the eve and within the week "Exile On Mainstream" is released, as has been the case with many lead singles around the time the albums in which they're featured on are first shipped to stores, that there will be even stronger digital sales that week until the single finally begins to fall the following week, and then this song could finally make the Top 10 due to that spike. We saw that happen with "What I've Done", which had a hot shot debut on the iTunes chart, but then slid below the Top 10 at one point, and then would later leap back into the Top 10 once "Minutes To Midnight" was released. We just saw that happen with 50 Cent where an otherwise underperforming "Ayo Technolgy" nonetheless surged into the Top 5 of the iTunes chart once "Curtis" was released. And I think it's pretty likely a similar scenario will happen in favor of matchbox twenty next week. Sincerely, Noah Eaton
