I figured I'd start a new thread considering WTMX in Chicago just started playing this. Does anyone think this could go far on this format?

I think it will chart at least, but I think it does have the potential to at least go Top 20.

I can see this going top 10 if the stations play the edit without Jay-Z.

I can't even see this going top 30 myself. "S.O.S." went top 20 last year because it was a remake of "Tainted Love", a popular Hot AC retro play.
Plus, with Fergie probably going top 20, I don't see Hot AC opening up to ANOTHER female pop singer lol.

My HotAC/Adult Top 40 station plays this one, and it's one of our most requested tracks! It seems to be a summer favourite among 30 year old women!

I think this is just a good song period, and it's not very urban anyway, so it should be fine.

I can see this going top 10 if the stations play the edit without Jay-Z. That's the version WTMX plays. They also play "Glamorous" by Fergie without the Ludacris rap, but they do play the rap portion of "Cupid's Chokehold". Go figure!

C100 hasn't been playing this one from what I've been hearing but they have been playing 'Shut Up And Drive'. I don't know if they started to play 'Umbrella' initially and now just play it rarely but I don't remember hearing it on there outside of countdown shows.

This song is becoming so popular at Top 40 that I think it has to "dent" the Hot AC format - the Jay-Z "rap" is only the intro (not very important) - Hot AC stations that do not lean alternative will be pressured (I think) into playing this song, but they'll have to balance that with the fact that a good deal of listeners won't want to hear it on the station
Any Hot AC stations that DON'T have a CHR/Pop in the market (WWMX/Baltimore, WINC/Winchester) will HAVE To play it (I Think)

Yeah I will hate if Winchester starts playing this, at that's just about the only station I listen to. They do play "Glamorous" by Fergie a lot, though; so I wouldn't be surprised.

This song is such garbage - You can stand under my umbrella (Ella ella) Eh eh eh Under my umbrella (Ella ella) Eh eh eh Under my umbrella (Ella ella) Eh eh eh Under my umbrella (Ella ella) Eh eh eh eh eh eh)Puke! Completely senseless lyrics. Can't understand why Hot AC is even considering this.

Yeah - lyrics are ridiculous - but there are still lots of markets with NO TOP 40 POP STATION (especially smaller markets) as well as markets where the Hot AC station is fighting for ratings with the Top 40 station - in both cases, I'm sure the Hot AC will have to play this song

Any Hot AC stations that DON'T have a CHR/Pop in the market (WWMX/Baltimore, WINC/Winchester) will HAVE To play it (I Think) Winchester does have a CHR: 98.3 Kiss-FM. Maybe you were thinking of WBQB in Fredericksburg? You can add all the Jersey Hot ACs to that list too though: WAYV and WSJO in Atlantic City, WJLK in Monmouth County, and WHCY in Newton. (WHCY and WSJO are non-reporters.) Baltimore is a weird station... they really need to make up their mind on whether they're Hot AC or CHR. Timbaland segueing into some 80's Madonna track doesn't satisfy anyone.

WWMX/Baltimore is one of the highest arbitron-rated Hot AC's in the country, though - many cities like Fredericksburg, VA, Atlantic City, NJ, Oxnard, CA, Stockton, CA etc. that are essentially suburbs of major cities (but have their own Hot AC radio stations) don't have CHR/Pop's in their markets - this is actually alot of Hot AC's that I think will play this song

Of the big commercial Baltimore FM signals, they're usually 7th 12+, out of 10 stations. They beat Jack, Free-FM, and the Classic Rock station and that's about it. I'm sure they'd be getting higher ratings as a CHR. Atlantic City isn't a suburban market, since Philly stations barely reach there, but I agree with you about Fredericksburg and other markets like that that only have Hot ACs. The stations have to play the big CHR hits to broaden their appeal. The same applies in small markets. On a road trip this past weekend, I heard non-reporter Hot ACs playing stuff like Sean Kingston, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and Kat Deluna. That's really pushing the boundaries of the format.

Well, I know it's not a favorite of a lot of people on this board, but Rihanna now has her second bonfide top 30 hit! 32 28 RIHANNA Umbrella (f/Jay-Z) 558 505 53 2.292 So far, this song seems to be holding down "Shut Up And Drive" in spins, but it will be interesting to see if "Umbrella" can continue to gain momentum and head toward the top 20. It seems a bit of a long shot at this time, but who knows.
