Impacts 10 July.
He has played the song at a few gigs this year. Definitely exemplifies the bluesy sound he promised. It's very familiar and safe melodically. It is a sort of political song, but again, somewhat safely so.
The lyrics, with thanks to AllAtSea:

I've heard also that John Mayer is willing to give up his Top 40 airplay stardom with "Continuum" so we can probably expect this to likely be directed exclusively to the Triple A market.
Hot AC airplay is probably most likely to happen too, though I imagine he'll peak somewhere like he did with "Clarity"off his last album.
I'm surprised to see a political-leaning song coming from him, given that he hasn't spoken about virtually any social themes in the world both in music, concert and interview alike, but this should be quite an interesting listen.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

As long as the album is better than "Heavier Things." I hope this goes right back to "Room For Squares" era...my god I'd love that!!

As long as the album is better than "Heavier Things." I hope this goes right back to "Room For Squares" era...my god I'd love that!! By the sound of it, I think "Continuum" is expected to be a largely non-commerical sounding release. "Room For Squares" itself didn't intend to be very commerical either, but it still had plenty of tracks that were radio-friendly and bouncy enough, including "Your Body Is A Wonderland", "Back To You", "My Stupid Mouth" and "Love Song For No One" (many potential singles were never released) I think "Continuum" is going to be even less commerical-sounding than "Heavier Things", probably almost entirely geared toward performance and eclecticism instead of radio hooks, and we'll finally get to hear much more of his solos and guitar work. And John Mayer is not in a bad spot to make that transition; his debut went triple platinum and his sophomore album double platinum, so going platinum with the next will be a most comfortable trend. The first two albums were really more about mayer's songwriting than his acclaimed guitar skills. I think we're finally going to get an album that makes justice of his full guitar potential, although you haven't seen him play until you actually see him in concert, where he's become famous for fusing licks and lyrics from other songs into his own and performing long Counting Crows-esque jams. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

They played this today on my Hot AC station in Cleveland. Big world premiere promotion. I honestly would never say it was John Mayer if the DJ didn't keeping saying " the new song from John Mayer" before and after playing it. Very bluesy vocally. No hint of those whispery vocals that he's known for. Reminded me more of Marc Brousard than John Mayer. I heard it twice but didn't register the lyrics at all. I really was surprised that I didn't hear a hint of the John Mayer I know in it. Will have to hear it a bit more before I make a judgement on it.

Now that I've heard the studio version, the thing that stands out most to be about the song is how it rips the chord progression from Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing." Lyrically, the two songs are obviously very different, but this song feels very derivative to me.

Some of the big stations immediately added this , including KYSR-FM , I hope that's a good sign.

On one listen, I think the song is decent. It is pretty different but at the same time the lyrics and the mood of the song remind me of Rob Thomas' Streetcorner Symphony. Again, this is just on one listen.
I'll take this song over any of John's previous singles. I think it will do very well for him on HotAC and AAA. I don't see it getting any pop play.

I like it , this will become a hit due to name recognition alone.

I like the song. Has a good feel to it though the 'television' lyrics seem random and unrelated.

Hearing this for the first time the full way through, this is one of my favorite John Mayer singles yet.
However, I think it's going to hit a brick wall once it enters the Top 15 and will have a run similar to that of "Clarity", the second single from their last album, which soared with a bullet of about +400 into the Top 20 to suddenly experience a massive slowdown and fall just as quickly off the chart once it touched the Top 15.
Triple A will love this, however, and AC will give it a generous amount of airplay. All in all, though it's possible John Mayer will lose his staple status on Hot AC from here on out, I think it's a good move that John Mayer is pushing toward a more non-commerical direction, especially since his last album went double-platinum and the debut triple-platinum, and thus can comfortably ship "Continuum" platinum most likely.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

The more I hear this song, the more I love the melody and John's raspy vocals. However, the more I hear it, the less I like the lyrics. I really like the lyrics to the first verse but the second verse and bridge are blah. (Again, the television lines seem random and contrived.)
Anyway, I also don't fully support the message of the chorus. Waiting for the world to change seems like such a passive stance, especially considering John is way past the voting age. I could probably appreciate such a message and stance from say, Teddy Geiger.

The first time I heard the song I didn't realize it was John Mayer and really didn't take notice of it. But it has grown on me. It has been playing a lot in Detroit on 96.3 WDVD.

I think it's easy to notice it's him in the song personally, and not being a big fan of his, this in my opinion, is easily his best song to date and one I can't stop listening to.

It's funny you all expected this to have a chart run similar to clarity and it peaked at #2. It's also funny this CD won POP ALBUM OF THE YEAR at the Grammy's and you said he was GIVING UP top 40 stardom.
This song just recently went to recurrent, and is still in the top 20 on most countdown shows based on Hot AC.

I got super sick of this song after just a few months. It became his second highest charting song on my chart but lasted only 14 weeks in my entire top 100. I kinda feel bad that it didn't hang around longer but I got SUPER burnt out on it. I still think it's an awesome song tho!

I really thought this was a remake of an old Van Morrison song. But apparently not!

That means that "Waiting On The World To Change" should be on American Top 40 until......oh December maybe!

Also, "Waiting" is still #1 at AC - 10th week now. It's Mayer's biggest AC hit to date.

"Waiting on The World to Change" is recurrent and "Gravity" is done.
13 14 JOHN MAYER Gravity 2006 Aware/Columbia 1457 1601 -144 7.623
Any word for the third single? I know "Belief" did poorly here. I thought a song called "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" was supposed to be a single.

Belief is an awesome song! I love the lyrics because they are so true and I never thought about it like that before. Big kudos to John for writing them.

Kiss 95.1/Charlotte is still playing this song (seems like) 90 times a day! Seems like this'll be the biggest hit of John Mayer's career, beating out "Your Body Is A Wonderland" - problem is there's nothing else in terms of big hit singles on his CD
