I asked WSQL on their Facebook page, "Will you be playing all 4 hours of AT40 from 2/10/1979 on Thursday?" since this is the first time that I've seen a 4 hour 'A' show. Many stations will have to make an adjustment or leave off the first hour. First they gave an auto reply "thanks for your message. We are not here right now, but we'll get back to you soon!" Then at 5am I got a strange message "You know on Thursday. Not permitted to record!" (Yeah, Right) Then at 1pm I got this message "Good afternoon Steve, we do normally play all four hours when it is a 4 hour segment. It will begin at appx 6:05, after the last Newscast of the day. Thank you for listening!" Thanks to the afternoon person for being nice and understanding. If they didn't this would be the first time I ever remember Squirrelly not playing a 4hr "A" that wasn't preempted by local sports programming. And that is usually just in Fall. They always repeat Sat 4pm EST.

The first hour had no commercials. Then at the end of the first hour they played "What the World Needs Now" a Burt Bacharach song. A tribute to him.
At the end of the second hour they played "That's What Friends are For", Another song by Burt.
At the end of the third hour, they played "Close to You" Carpenters, another song by Burt.
This show had original extras and Premiere extras. A full and packed show. I always thought that Chicago's song "No Tell Lover" was "Motel Lover".

From 2/17/1973 #16 Jermaine Jackson did a remake of Daddy's home from Shep and the Limelights from 1961, but I'm more familiar with Cliff Richard's remake of that song that he did in 1981. #17 is Marvin Gaye's Trouble Man. that was referenced in Captain America Winter Soldier. I had to look up the lyrics on that one. It was from the soundtrack to the 20th Century Fox film Trouble Man in 1972. The title track, which became a #4 R&B hit single, describes a stereotypical 70s black action hero who came up hard in the ghetto and has to play by his own rules to survive. A better song for Cap would have been "We didn't Start the Fire".
The Supersized version of that week adds 11 minutes to it.

Casey mentioned the last time that a song made it to the top 10 in just two weeks happened in 1971 with John Lennon's "Imagine" (also debuting at #20 before jumping to #6). Even wilder that both songs stalled quickly, as "Thriller" peaked at #4 and "Imagine" peaked at #3.

I don't know what accounted for Imagine's fast rise, but in the case of Thriller the song was released to radio much earlier than it was released as a single, so it was already near its airplay peak by the time it entered the Hot 100. Not unlike Madonna's Rescue Me in 1991.

Not unlike Madonna's Rescue Me in 1991. The 45 for "Imagine" wasn't issued until after the album was. They were only a month apart, but the song had apparently been getting a lot of airplay so there was a lot of perceived demand for the single. But its lifespan was limited as more people bought the album.

Of note: Premiere replaces Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" as the Hour #1 op extra with the Jim Reeves story and all I ask is why?!?!? At the AT40 Fun & Games board, it is said that in addition to the Jim Reeves story Casey plays the song "He'll Have to Go". (Or appears to play, anyway; the song isn't in the original show though the story might have been.)

jdelachjr2002, or anybody, has AT40 ever actually played "We Will Rock You"? It would take me forever to hunt through Pete B's 70s book to find out. dL

Paul Simon, don't feel bad, I don't know what a slide rule is for either. from the 3/11/1978 chart "Wonderful World".
3/11/1978 regular is 2:29:19 Supersized is 2:48:16 19 minutes more.
I wonder what the biggest margin was

Now to conclude the weekend preview with the two '80s shows. The "A" show for this week is from 3/20/1982. Here is an edited repost: Four songs debuted this week: "Nobody Said It Was Easy (Looking For The Lights)" - La Roux (#35) "'65 Love Affair" - Paul Davis (#36) "Goin' Down" - Greg Guidry (#38) "Just Can't Win 'Em All" - Stevie Woods (#40) Four songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" - Daryl Hall & John Oates (#20) "Harden My Heart" - Quarterflash (#25) "Call Me" - Skyy (#26) "I Believe" - Chilliwack (#33) Biggest Mover: "Don't Talk To Strangers" - Rick Springfield (#36 to #24) Biggest Dropper: "Love In The First Degree" - Alabama (#15 to #37) Original extras: "Last Train To Clarksville" - The Monkees "My Sharona" - The Knack Long Distance Dedications: "Through The Years" - Kenny Rogers (#29) "I Love You" - Climax Blues Band Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Did It In A Minute" - Daryl Hall & John Oates (#66; highest debut) Hour #2: "Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk" - Dr. Hook (#41) Hour #3: "Wasted On The Way" - Crosby, Stills & Nash (NR) Hour #4: "Don't You Want Me" - Human League (#67) Of note: Premiere has replaced Kool & The Gang's "Get Down On It" which was the Hour #3 op extra in its' 2011 and 2017 airings, with "Wasted On The Way" as the '80s needs to pay their respects to David Crosby who died a while ago - mind you this comes six weeks after the '70s honored Crosby (albeit with 1977 as a "B" show - ironically this week is the first time Premiere has featured 1977 on the '70s shows since!) The "B" show this week is from 3/16/1985. 3/12/77 Disco Lucy - Wilton Place Street Band. I've never heard that before and Casey said it was about Lucille Ball and the theme music from the show that was made disco.
Gloria - Enchantment. Another song called Gloria, but Laura Branigan's would have fit in better as it is more disco than this one.
The history of the R&B/ Soul chart just after #20
Casey just got a call from Billboard about position changes with the new ones being Olivia's Sam at 26, Stevie Wonder's I Wish at 32 and Elton John's at 28. That's what the issue of Billboard said. But the cue sheet has it the way Casey played them.

Billboard sometimes made last minute changes to the chart, and that week AT40 apparently wasn't notified until the show was being tracked and there wasn't enough time to re-record the relevant segments. Not wanting to put out inaccurate results, the only solution was for Casey to retroactively correct himself later in the show.

On another note, I wonder if Westwood One WILL ever release Casey's Top 40 (1989- 1998) for syndication?
I have been relying on SiriusXM 90's on 9 for my 1990s countdowns (which is only the top 30 not top 40).
I am also peeved at their massive round of layoffs last week. Some of the personalities I listen to were PURGED.

3/20/82
I was in 10th grade at this time and I listened to AT40. I'd bring a little transistor radio to school with an earphone and I'd listen to the songs at the time. This time period is of good memories. I remember telling a kid about a girl in the class "That girl thinks that she's so bad".
There was variety in the charts. Country with Alabama, Kenny Rogers and the OakRidge Boys Novelty songs like Pacman Fever, and Bob and Doug MacKenzie Remakes from Cliff Richard (Daddy's Home) previously done by Jermaine Jackson and Van Halen (Pretty Woman) previously done by Roy Orbison Huey Lewis is just starting out J Geils band with it's second picture song. I have that album. Several lower peaking songs from rated bands, "Spirits in the Material World", "Edge of Seventeen", "Take it easy on Me" Diana Ross, Sister Sledge and the Pointer Sisters on the chart. Air Supply made the top 5 with their first 6 records. Joan Jett at #1 for the 1st week of 6 keeping Journey at #2 for the 4th week. That was the first time that as band lead by a woman hit #1. So that must mean that Heart didn't hit #1 before that.

KZOY Sat 1-5 normally plays the B show but they played 1982 WQCY Sat at 10am played 1985 but they don't play the extras. WFMX Sunday at 5am normally plays the B shows and the extras but they played 1982. I'll be checking the rest of my list throughout the day. Sundays: KKLZ 10-2 they played 1982 KLDZ 11-3 they are playing 1982 WLKN 3-7 They are playing 1985 and they are playing the extras WFRO 8pm-12 played 1985 and they played the extras
In the 3/16/1985 chart there are two songs honoring Marvin Gaye within 2 spaces of each other. Diana Ross' Missing You and the Commodores' Missing You. I remember listening to the radio on April 1, 1984 and the DJ comes and says "This is no April Fool, but Marvin Gaye has died". Missing You was #1 on the R&B charts and was replaced by the Commodore's song.

Actually "I Love Rock'n'Roll" was #1 for 7 weeks. And Heart's two #1's were "These Dreams" in 1986 and "Alone" in 1987. (BTW, Joan blocked an all-female band from #1; the Go-Gos' "We Got the Beat" peaked at #2 for three weeks in April 1982.)

WPNC goes either way on the '80s but played 1982 this week. WPAC aired 1985 in place of their Sunday afternoon '70s show (since there was only one '70s show this week, I assume they needed some sort of variety).

WPAC is the one I use Saturday morning at 7 for the 70s B show. I also use WPNC Saturday at Noon for the 70s B show if needed, and I can count on them to do the 4 hours 70s shows.
Incidently, this week's 1977 show was 2:30:31 and the Supersized show was 2:53:16 for 22 minutes 45 seconds over
