I think this song is probably the closest they get to sounding like their 90s selves. Although I think the whole album was recorded with No Need To Argue in mind, this song is the one to capture the overall sound they're known for.

The main problem I have with "Roses" is how sterile the production sounds.
What made their first two albums sound absolutely engaging was how dreamy, haunted and ethereal a lot of the production sounded. It had a floating quality to it. Then, when they tried to replicate the success of "Zombie" with "Hollywood", they clumsily came across as more one-dimensional on "To the Faithful Departed"..........and then from there, upon trying to retreat to the sound of their debut, produced much flatter, blander results overall.
"Roses" has its individual moments for sure. But the production curse remains intact. Even "Schizophrenic Playboy", which in a live setting sounds intense, sounds disappointingly flat on the studio version. Where's the passion? Where's the distortion?

Hmmm, yeah that's what it is about it now that you mention it. I knew there was something when listening to it that seemed rather dry, or empty, and it's the production. The songs themselves I think are quite good and there are a few songs that I think are as good as, or could rival some of the better 90s ones but for whatever reason, there was some element that felt off.

I really like "Tomorrow" for what it is. The studio version just sounds boring. I can't even listen to the studio version of "Schizophrenic Playboy" anymore. I just treat the live version I found on YouTube as my official version! Trust me............it rocks HARD! ;) Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS
