I was just thinking how strange the programming was for that weekend when it all went down. I'm pretty sure they froze the charts for a few weeks and a lot of people put blame that it killed album sales for Michael Jackson and Elton John? Something like that. Any thoughts?

I didn't watch the charts back then, but it killed pretty much everything. From cancelled flights to empty malls. People just stopped spending money or going out for a while.

I do remember it being a pretty unified & patriotic time, around here at least, and I live in a big city.

Though the week ending 09/29/01 would be the week after the attack. "Falling" topped the Hot 100 that week :o

Yeah, on the CHR chart reflecting the week of 9/11 (wasn't printed by Radio & Records but some of us have the data), seven songs in the top 40 had losses over 1000 spins and only a few songs had bullets like "Emotion", "Gone", "Hero" and "Superman (It's Not Easy)". It was little better further down. That was also the week that "Drowning" by the Backstreet Boys debuted; didn't make much of an impact first week, but it soared the next.

You're right about Jackson. "You Rock My World" just got lost in the shuffle and started collapsing a few weeks later. Elton John's era wasn't severely affected as he still managed to get decent album sales and 3 AC entries out of it.

Also on the September 15-16, 2001 weekend following the 9/11/2001 tragic events: Most radio stations didn't receive that weekend's radio countdown shows (American Top 40, American Top 40 Flashback, American Top 20 AC/Hot AC, FOX Family Countdown, 20 The Countdown Magazine, Backtrax USA, American Country Countdown, etc.) due to the slow mail and air traffic ban, although most radio stations did get that September 15-16, 2001 Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 since it was shipped to radio stations on Mondays at the time.

Oddly, that weekend in Chicago the then 94.7 FM station WZZN The Zone then a 1980's/Hot AC format, switched to an alternative/new rock format despite the September 11, 2001 events.

"Click Click Boom" tanked that week as well. I've only heard AC/DC's "Safe in New York City" once on the radio since. It was basically a bad time to be a rock artist.

As an aside, look at how low the #1 song is in spins and how high #50 is. A song in the 70s then would make the Top 40 today while the #1 then would at the bottom of the Top 10.
