Seriously though, look at the trends. Being an 'undeniable legend' in movies and musicals and having hit albums and top 40 hits and so forth does not punch an automatic ticket to the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. With a few notable exceptions, non-rock acts (Madonna, ABBA, etc) tend to gain acceptance much slower (see Neil Diamond) Barbra Streisand could eventually get in, but the reason she isn't would have to be her musical style does not lean towards rock Oh, I definitely agree. Her impact is felt in vocalists - there has not been a person on Broadway the last 40+ years who doesn't want to sound like her/have her level of impact. She was a major star (probably the biggest female artist) of the peak of the rock era - but I'm sure those who were spinning rock 45s in their bedroom weren't angling for the latest Streisand record. She's in the Grammy Hall of Fame and the AFI Hall of Fame. So she'll just have to settle for those two. ;)

pegian- you should know it's not just about "rock" music. She was such a shoo-in because she's been one of the most revered, important acts since she debuted. Her music has received a fair share of acclaim, and what she's done in her her music, videos, concerts, etc. had a huge impact and influence on not just music and entertainment, but the culture. In a short answer, without going into essay territory, that's pretty much why. :) PTB- yes, Babs may just have to settle for those two lesser things. And, she was an honoree of the Kennedy Center Honors.

And didn't Streisand sing a decent amount of Laura Nyro songs in the 70s? That's a connection to "Rock" as well.

There must be something going on with this process that she has not been inducted yet.

Rogers, Bare inducted into Country Hall of Fame .
Associated Press By CHRIS TALBOTT 48 minutes ago NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) β Kenny Rogers, Bobby Bare and the late "Cowboy" Jack Clement β three men whose influence still ripples across the surface of modern music β are now members of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The three were saluted by stars including Garth Brooks, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris and Barry Gibb during a ceremony Sunday at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Each of the three inductees had a profound effect on music in his own way, and one could argue each deserved a place among the genre's greatest names long ago. Rogers helped push country music farther into pop music than it had ever been. And Bare and Clement, who passed away earlier this year just a few months after learning of his induction, were as influential behind the scenes as under the spotlight.

^Perhaps if she had at least one country-tinged recording. I maintain that Country, in general, is its own little niche compared to rock/pop/R&B, etc. and the Country Hall is there for such deserving acts. Which is why the Rock Hall may not feel bad in neglecting some of those acts. I don't know if the Rock Hall would consider Kenny Rogers, though, anyhow.

Well...Kenny Rogers had more pop hits as a country artist than anyone besides perhaps Brenda Lee and Elvis and they are in

He does, but Elvis... Kenny Rogers... somewhat of a difference there. :) As for Ms. Lee, she's just more respected, I s'pose.

Even with Nile Rodgers getting one of the biggest hits of the year, Chic still doesn't get in. WTF?

- Nirvana - Kiss - Linda Ronstadt - Cat Stevens - Peter Gabriel - Daryl Hall & John Oates Got half of the ones I chose; fair enough. I am surprised that they passed up all of their hip-hop artists + the artists more closely associated with R&B than the crossover Hall & Oates, though; the last few years, they've seemed to try to balance genres (for the ratings, I imagine).

I'm ecstatic with this class, as five of the six would have made my ballot were I given the opportunity to vote (Nirvana being the odd man out as I knew they would get in easily).
I've never been supportive of Chic's induction really, but I feel like Nile Rodgers would be deserving of an honorary award. Hopefully they go that route, as another nom for them would seem desperate at this point.
The only thing I would have done differently is induct more than six. The Zombies, N.W.A, Deep Purple and The Meters would all make good inductees, imo. LL Cool J too.
I also think it's funny that singer-songwriters are basically a lock if nominated - see Randy Newman, Donovan, Laura Nyro, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Neil Diamond, etc. etc. If they nominate Warren Zevon, Phil Ochs, Carly Simon, Jim Croce, Nick Drake, Gordon Lightfoot or anyone like that in the future, I wouldn't count them out (knocking on wood, though, as that's fine with me - Zevon, Drake, Ochs especially)

What ratings, Wot? It's not like the ceremony is broadcast on a big network. (last year, did it even air on cable?) As a refresher, this is the number of years the inductees had to wait before induction: Nirvana: 0 (First-year-eligible inductee) Kiss: 14 Hall & Oates: 16 Cat Stevens: 22 Peter Gabriel: 11 Linda Ronstadt: 19 Shows how much more regarded an act like Nirvana has been compared to the others.

Last year's ceremony was shown on HBO. I don't think they are concerned about ratings for a once a year show.

Well, some awards shows get notable ratings, but something like this isn't really a mass-audience type of thing like others.

Have I commented on every one of your posts? Didn't notice that. #Overexaggerate
:)
I maintain, though, that the organization isn't concerned about ratings.

Not surprising about Nirvana. People have been riding Kurt's dead dick for almost 20 years. I'm happy for Hall & Oates, Kiss and Linda Ronstadt though.

Nirvana's music fared well on year-end lists and such before his passing, so it's not like Cobain's early demise gave the band's music its reverence. When some young acts pass on, though, it does add a fascination, if you will, to the legacy. But, either way, the band made a big impact and the music was and continues to be very well-received.

Yes, Nirvana would have got in anyway, even if Kurt CObain had not died. It is true though that death is a proven way to sell records
