Chic has been eligible since 2002, and has been nominated six times. I don't think Chic was nominated last year.
Will this year be lucky seven?

It's just too bad that Donna Summer had to die to possibly get into the HOF.
Yeah for Heart!

I'm glad to see Heart mentioned again and it looks like Rush might finally get in! Still hoping for The Cure to be nominated again, too. And looks like my girl Janet Jackson will be overlooked yet again.

Why the "yay," when these are just FRL's predictions for who will make it onto the nominees list? :)
If Donna Summer is nominated, it will be her fifth nomination since becoming eligible in 1999. Like I said before, for some, it's just a matter of when. Some just have to wait a lot longer than others.

^Oh, yes!
And Pat Benatar...
What about Whitney? She died this year.
And to the Mariah fan above, I don't think she has a chance.

I don't know if Mimi Carey will NEVER get in, but I doubt she'll be considered seriously when she's eligible. She, like Whitney, suffers from the big-voice-lesser(perception)-material syndrome- like Barbra Streisand, probably Celine Dion, too. Babs is an undisputed legend, though, despite the lack of big critical success, and I don't think she's that bothered over not having this acknowledgment.

Maybe the term "Rock" in "Rock Hall of Fame" may throw some people off How about the Pop Hall instead? Beatles, Elvis, Sinatra Nominated For American Pop Music Hall of Fame September 17, 2012 | By Associated Press CANONSBURG, Pa. (AP) -- The American Pop Music Hall of Fame won't be open until next summer, but the first round of nominees to be inducted into the western Pennsylvania-based hall have been announced. The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra are among the top 40 nominees. The American Pop Music Hall of Fame is scheduled to open next July in a temporary home in what's now a cafe in Canonsburg, just outside Pittsburgh. Fundraising is under way for a permanent building. Music fans and people in the industry can vote for their favorite nominees online starting later this week. The final list of 20 inductees will be inducted next May. Eligible artists must have lodged a national hit between 1946 and 1975. Other nominees include The Beach Boys, Tony Bennett, the Carpenters, Chubby Checker, Bobby Darin, Neil Diamond and Simon and Garfunkel. Voters are also being asked to pick their top five songs, from a list of 100 released between 1966 and 1975, that best defined that generation (see below). The finalists will be narrowed down by the Hall of Fame selection panel, with 10 eventually inducted into the Hall of Fame. Canonsburg calls itself the country's "small town music capital" and boasts native sons including Perry Como, Bobby Vinton and the Four Coins Top Pop Songs tally as of Sept. 11: 1.Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys 2.Imagine - John Lennon 3.Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel 4.Hey Jude - The Beatles 5.Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf 6.Sounds of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel 7.Light My Fire - The Doors 8.American Pie - Don McLean 9.Daydream Believer - The Monkees 10.I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye Read more at www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/genre/rock-and-pop/beatles-elvis-sinatra-nominated-for-american-1007950872.story#FrbXaKLvHghESuSE.99

Her affinity for standards hurts Babs, for sure. She was the biggest female star of the Rock era, and you would think that would carry some clout. She seems to get more respect from the movie industry than the music industry.

The Rock hall always included acts who would not be classifed as "rock." The ones who have issue with non-rock-classified acts in the Hall usually are ones who are upset that their favorite rock act isn't in. But that usually has more to do with the act itself.
Nominees for that Pop Hall look to be from pre-1980. I don't like the idea of fan voting to determine things- the UK Music Hall of Fame had done that for one act from each decade for the first induction (to go along with the five founding members), but it's better when industry people choose the inductees.

Another theory, just being a prolific singer of someone elses songs may not be enough to get in. If you write and sing your own songs that to me puts you on a higher plane 'hall wise' than if you just sang someone elses songs.

That doesn't explain how Elvis got in though, or Madonna.

No but that might bea factor to consider why other singers with lots of hits do not get in

Madonna? She has co-written the bulk of her songs, so what'chu talkin' about, peigan?
Aretha Franklin would be a prime example of a female singer who had little input in the composing of her musical catalog- but there's no denying her talent and influence she had on singers to come after her.

Well, without the "influence" factor, you need to be writing your own songs, I think

Fortunately, someone like Madge had both the influence and songwriting factors- plus, the well-received music and the huge impact on music/entertainment and culture. So, all of those things culminated in her being a no-brainer first-year inductee.
The nominees should be announced this week- last year, they were announced on Tuesday of the comparable week.

I wasn't aware that Madonna co-wrote a good portion of her songs. That said, I doubt that was the major reason she made it in to the R&RHoF on the first ballot. I suspect it has more to do with the major influence she has had on female pop singers since the 80's.

Madonna had sole writing credit on five of the songs on her debut, and then five of the nine tracks on Like a Virgin. From there on out, she was a co-writer on the bulk of her material. I agree that that's probably not a major reason she made it on her first year of eligibility. She was just one of those no-brainers.
At times, there are some who you'd think would be no-brainers, that do not get in on the first try: Michael Jackson is one. He made it in his fourth year of eligibility (as did David Bowie and Joni Mitchell). Of note: When the Hall started in 1986, they couldn't induct everyone, so some obvious first-ballot acts like Aretha Franklin had to wait for the next year.

Another theory, just being a prolific singer of someone elses songs may not be enough to get in. If you write and sing your own songs that to me puts you on a higher plane 'hall wise' than if you just sang someone elses songs. And it's odd, because Streisand is a prolific composer of songs. "Evergreen" being the best example.
