Well it's one of the top airplay gainers, about to take #1 on iTunes and Amazon, and was recently put on streaming. It's #1 on Youtube 100, most liked, etc. It should do GREAT on streaming in a couple weeks.

If Gangnam doesn't hit #1 within 3 weeks, it probably wont' hit #1 ever. If I were the record company I'd do an English version and get it out there ASAP!

I'm Asian and I find the popularity of the song somewhat minstrel show-y and offensive. I also think the song is terrible. I mean, of all the Asian songs to break out this kinda makes sense as a novelty, the way that the Asian artist but sung in English Like a G6 made sense as a breakout as a song that sounded like all the other dance hits.

How exactly is the popularity of the song offensive? It's popular because the music video is funny and the dance moves are easy and silly to do. The artist's ethnicity and the language are just supplements to the content which is how music should be handled unless the artist says otherwise. It's no different than "Danza Kuduro" or "Alors on Danse" becoming worldwide hits even in countries where Spanish and French aren't spoken. They're popular because people like what they hear despite not knowing what they're saying.

You really have no more right to be offended than do white people that Ke$ha spent nine weeks at number 1 with Tik Tok... (Love Ke$ha btw, but you get my point).

But Taylor's latest hit song, We are never... is really terrible to me. I think Gangnam Style is much better than hers ;)

After the Britney video, Psy has blown up on iTunes. Quickly headed for #1 on the Hot 100, me thinks. It still needs higher airplay.

It's #1 on Youtube 100, most liked, etc. It should do GREAT on streaming in a couple weeks. That's because the video is it's biggest draw. I don't expect much from the rest of the streaming world.

There needs to be a distinction between the digital and the non digital eras.

Enjoying the haters mad their more-shallow-and-pre-fabricated-than-any-boy/girl-band-in-the-west-ever-could-hope-to-be-korean idols aren't this successful.
Hopefully GS can stay some weeks at no. 1, but not too much. I never like staleness.

A few years back, a Korean friend asked what it would take for a K-Pop artist to have a hit in the US. I told him that given the nature of audiences there, it would have to be a novelty song. Of course, in the Korean context it's not exactly a novelty song, though it is meant to be humorous. (I'm not sure I'm buying the "scathing parody of the Gangnam lifestyle" angle, though.) But for most US listeners who wouldn't know Gangnam from Vietnam, it probably just comes across as an Asian guy doing a funny dance.
That said, it is still a step forward from when Kyu Sakamoto's ballad "I'll Look Up As I Walk (So the Tears Don't Fall)" was released stateside under the name "Sukiyaki."

^I would think so. The station I heard it on, it had one of those messages-from-the-act things preceding it.
