It's unfortunate that M5 might get #1 with this crap song. I loved Payphone! What a shame that it got stuck at #2 behind all that crap.

Was there evidence that singles sales reduced album sales in the 90s? I don't remember It's more of guidance I believe. And if 50 people actually BUY the song, it makes more money than 5000 people streaming it. That's like saying radio airplay cuts off sales. We know that radio airplay does not cut off sales...in fact it promotes sales. Song's that simply get TV exposure don't have lasting sales if there is no radio airplay or social media or on demand aspect to back up the sales.

I guess Taylor is still #1. An article should've been out by now if M5 are #1.

They've been posting other articles all day but not the Hot 100 article. Maybe they're taking some extra time to change the rules to keep Maroon 5 at #2.

Maroon 5 notches its third No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as "One More Night" lifts 2-1 in its lucky 13th week on the chart. P!nk and fun., meanwhile, top the Radio Songs and On-Demand Songs charts, respectively. Maroon 5 had previously reigned with "Makes Me Wonder" for three weeks in 2007 and with "Moves Like Jagger," featuring Christina Aguilera, for four weeks last year. The latter song sprang from the band's lead singer, Adam Levine, and Aguilera, having collaborated while serving as coaches during the 2011 maiden season of NBC's singing competition "The Voice."
Despite spending its first 19 weeks in the Hot 100's top 10, Maroon 5's previous single, "Payphone," featuring Wiz Khalifa, just missed the summit, having spent six weeks peaking at No. 2. It ranks at No. 15 this week. "Night" moves to the Hot 100's pinnacle with top Airplay Gainer honors, fueled by an 11-5 surge on Radio Songs (84 million audience impressions, up 17%, according to Nielsen BDS) and an 8-4 charge on On-Demand Songs (705,000 on-demand streams, up 16%, according to BDS). It holds at No. 3 on Digital Songs with a 2% decline to 192,000 downloads sold in the chart's tracking week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's sold 1.4 million since its release. "'Night" unseats last week's Hot 100 leader, Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" (1-2), as the former title logs a 6% gain in overall chart points, while the latter decreases by 11%. Still, "Never" lands a fifth consecutive week atop Digital Songs (226,000, down 20%) and advances 7-6 on Radio Songs (83 million, up 8%).
Aiding Maroon 5's coronation: "Never" continues not to register subscription streaming points on the Hot 100, as the track has not yet been made available to on-demand streaming services that also contribute to the Hot 100's data pool. ("Never" also, thus, has yet appear on the On-Demand Songs ranking). Fun.'s "Some Nights" climbs 4-3 on the Hot 100, powered by a 2-1 push on On-Demand Songs (774,000, up 2%). As fun.'s debut smash "We Are Young," featuring Janelle Monae, led On-Demand Songs for the chart's first five weeks, following its March 24 inception, the trio becomes the first act to take multiple titles to No. 1 on the subscription streaming survey. "Nights" rises 16-11 on Radio Songs (69 million, up 17%), while dipping 4-5 on Digital Songs (153,000 (down 4%). Flo Rida's former two-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Whistle" slides 3-4, while P!nk's "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" enters the top five (6-5). On Radio Songs, "Blow" blasts 4-1, marking P!nk's second No. 1 and first on her own; she previously ruled Radio Songs for six weeks in 2001 with Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Mya on the quartet's "Lady Marmalade." "Blow" scores a 6% increase 98 million (representing the first Radio Songs No. 1 to fall shy of 100 million in weekly audience since Ne-Yo's "Closer" claimed the crown with a still-impressive 88 million four years ago this week.) "Blow" concurrently climbs 8-7 on Digital Songs (116,000, up 3%) and 28-26 on On-Demand Songs (401,000, up 14%). P!nk is guaranteed more chart headlines next week, when her sixth studio set, "The Truth About Love," released on Sept. 18, will storm the upper reaches of the Billboard 200 albums chart. Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Justin Bieber's "As Long as You Love Me," featuring Big Sean, rises 7-6, followed by Ellie Goulding's former No. 2-peaking "Lights" (5-7); Alex Clare's "Too Close" (10-8); Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Good Time" (9-9); and, Neon Trees' "Everybody Talks" (8-10). The Hot 100's top 10 could welcome two titles next week that vault to the region's doorstep this week. K-Pop phenomenon Psy soars 64-11 with "Gangnam Style," which rockets 25-4 on Digital Songs (188,000, up 210%). Psy appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and NBC's "Today" last week and made a cameo on the season premiere of the network's "Saturday Night Live" over the weekend (Sept. 15). "Gangnam," buoyed by the buzz of its accompanying dance featuring horse riding-influenced moves, simultaneously gallops onto On-Demand Songs at No. 43 (300,000) and Radio Songs (19 million, up 131%).
Directly below "Gangnam" on the Hot 100, Kanye West rockets 55-12 with "Clique," with Jay-Z and Big Sean. The song earns the Hot 100's top Digital Gainer tag, flying 16-2 on Digital Songs (209,000, up 182%). It also opens at the No. 75 anchor position on Radio Songs (15 million, up 104%). Like P!nk, West is set to arrive high atop next week's Billboard 200 following today's release of "Good Music Cruel Summer," his collaborations album featuring tracks of his own with guests and those by such R&B/hip-hop stars as DJ Khaled, Kid Cudi and John Legend. Check Billboard.com tomorrow (Sept. 20), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 and On-Demand Songs in their entirety and Digital Songs and Radio Songs, will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems we are more often seeing songs hit #1 on the Hot 100 while not actually being #1 on any component chart.
Speaks to consistency, I suppose!

"We Are Never..." would be an easy number one if it were available on all components.
#1 on the Hot 100 might not mean "most popular song in the country" this week.

it's pretty impressive that after a decade Maroon 5 is still churning out hits & making it looks easy. They're one of the last bands I would've expected to have such lasting success.

Well, it's up to a label to release a track to paid-subscription outlets. Just as it was to release a track as a non-vinyl commercial single in the 90s and early 2000s. They all know the rules and have the chance to play the game as other labels do.
Maybe Swift's label probably feels that it would lose some sales if 'We Are never..." were available for on-demand listening- who knows.

I feel quite the opposite. I always knew they were likely to be a lasting force to be reckoned with. So when their sophomore album really started to level off after a strong lead single performance for "Makes Me Wonder".............I was shocked, and even more so when "Hands All Over", at one point, looked like it wouldn't even go Platinum. But I always knew the band had the it-factor to them, mostly because of Adam Levine's come-hither vocal style and somewhat-cool-but-still-likeable-enough attitude. I also predicted they would be a name to keep looking out for because, at least through their debut album, they had a unique fusion of R&B to their sound that is somewhat incomparable among otherwise palatable Adult Top 40 acts. So, their re-emergence doesn't surprise me one bit. If anything, I'm surprised they already leveled off abruptly to begin with. That shouldn't have happened. Namaste, Noah Hibiscus Eaton

Namaste, Noah Hibiscus Eaton I have to say, I love reading your responses. So astute! And I agree with you. Especially when they partnered up with Rihanna on I'll Never See Your Face Again. I love that song and having Rihanna on the song (while she wasn't as red-hot as she is now, was still a chart force at the time) would be a guaranteed top 20 hit but it stalled at 51. That always confused me...but glad to see they are both doing so well!

Week Ending Sept. 16, 2012. Songs: Novelty Hit Of The Year
"Gangnam Style," the loopy novelty hit by Korean pop star Psy, vaults from #64 to #11 in its second week on the Hot 100. The song, which The Village Voice called "an inspired piece of silliness," is shaping up to be this year's "Macarena" or "Rock Me Amadeus." That's no small feat: Los Del Rio's "Macarena" logged 14 weeks at #1 in the summer and fall of 1996. Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus" spent three weeks on top in the spring of 1986. As you can see, the desire for escapist fare with a sense of the absurd is nothing new. All three of these songs were recorded in foreign languages (Korean, Spanish and German, respectively), which also shows that a playful spirit transcends language differences.
"Gangnam Style" ranks even higher on the Hot Digital Songs chart, which measures only sales. It leaps from #25 to #4 on that chart, based on sales of 188K copies. "Gangnam Style" is a global pop phenomenon. It has already reached the top 10 in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and South Korea.
Psy (real name: Park Jae-sang) is a 34-year old performer who was born in South Korea. In the tracking period, the busy Psy appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Today and Saturday Night Live.
Just eight weeks after Maroon 5's "Payphone" logged its sixth and final week at #2, the group's new single "One More Night" reaches #1. Adam Levine should compare notes with fellow reality show star Mariah Carey, who experienced a similar fate in 2005. She spent six frustrating weeks at #2 with "Shake It Off," but then (heeding the advice of that song title), she bounced right back with "Don't Forget About Us," which hit #1.
"One More Night" is Maroon 5's third #1 hit, following "Makes Me Wonder" (three weeks on top in 2007) and "Moves Like Jagger" (featuring Christina Aguilera, four weeks on top in 2011). Phil Collins hit #1 in 1985 with an entirely different song titled "One More Night." It was his second of seven #1 solo hits. Like Adam Levine, Collins juggled solo and group projects. Collins was the drummer and lead singer for Genesis.
Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" dips to #2 after spending a total of three weeks on top. It's #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the fifth straight week. It's the first song to spend its first five weeks as the nation's top-seller since "Love The Way You Lie" by Eminem featuring Rihanna led the digital sales chart for its first six weeks in 2010. "Love The Way You Lie" would have been #1 for its first eight weeks, but its run was interrupted for one week by (wait for it) Taylor Swift's "Mine."
"We Are Never Ever…" has not yet been made available to on-demand streaming services, which hurt its chances of holding on to the top spot on the Hot 100 (which combines radio airplay, digital sales and streaming points.) By contrast, "One More Night" posted a 16% gain in on-demand streams, according to Nielsen BDS.
Pop titans Max Martin and Shellback produced and co-wrote "One More Night" and co-produced and co-wrote "We Are Never Ever...," giving them back-to-back #1 hits.
.fun's "Some Nights" jumps from #4 to #3. The song tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week, making the New York-based outfit the first group or duo to land two 2 million sellers in 2012. "Some Nights" follows "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae), which has sold 5,574,000 copies so far this year. Three solo artists, Katy Perry, Flo Rida and Wiz Khalifa, have also landed two 2 million sellers in 2012.
P!nk lands her seventh top five hit as "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" jumps from #6 to #5. This is P!nk's fourth top five hit since 2008, which means she has had had more top five hits in her second run of radio success than she did in her first.
P!nk had three top five hits ("Most Girls," the all-star "Lady Marmalade" and "Get The Party Started") in her first burst of success in 2000-2001. Since 2008, she has had four more ("So What," "Raise Your Glass," "F**kin Perfect" and now "Blow Me…").
P!nk's The Truth About Love is expected to enter The Billboard 200 at #1 next week, with sales in the 200K range. It would be P!nk's first #1 album.
Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs.

Nicki Minaj's "Pound The Alarm" jumps from #19 to #17 in its eighth week…Chris Brown's "Don't Wake Me Up" jumps from #24 to #21 in its 12th week.

"Bandz A Make Her Dance" by Juicy J featuring Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz is the week's top new entry at #71. Juicy J was a cofounder of Three 6 Mafia, which had three top 30 hits: "Stay Fly," "Poppin' My Collar" and "Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body)"…"Between The Raindrops" by Lifehouse featuring Natasha Bedingfield debuts at #79. This is vying to become the third top 10 hit for both artists. Lifehouse previously scored with "Hanging By A Moment" (#2 in 2001) and "You And Me" (#5 in 2005). Bedingfield scored with "Unwritten" (#5 in 2006) and "Pocketful Of Sunshine" (#5 in 2008)…Eric Church's "Creepin'" jumps from #88 to #80 in its fourth week.
"Put It Down" by Brandy featuring Chris Brown jumps from #90 to #81 in its fifth week. Brandy was 15 in November 1994 when she landed her first top 10 hit, "I Wanna Be Down."
