Maddona is not the template for females. Until Madonna sells over 38 million of one album like Shania. IN fact Shania is the first woman in history with back to back diamond albums. And Shania's GH has has scanned 3.5 million in a year and a half and it takes a long time for GH cd's to accumilate its total sales and even more so in todays climate of down loading.

LOve Plastic, Shania is not pop or country and thats what sets her apart. She created her own genre and doens't belong anywhere. She is all genres. And Shania set the standard for best selling female cd of alltime and that is a fact. I never said Shania was more of an influence on the pop scene. Shania rarely does interviews and never cators to any one genre. Thats what sets her apart.

You implied Shania was the template for females out there...which I think is incorrect. Right now, its Madonna and Mariah. I can see influences of both of them in almost every female out there right now. (I personally think we need some more rock chick influenced chicks )

Madonna and Mariah are pop acts. The world is consisted of much more than just pop. Shania is all genres and that sets her apart. YOu can ask people of all different genres all over the world and Shania's name is always mentioned by someone. Madonna is a pop icon and so is Mariah. Shania is a music icon and her music is not pop or country and thats what sets her apart. Not to mention she set the standard for success of a solo album. More people have Shania's COO album than any of Mariah or Madonna's album.

I dont think he was trying to undermine it. Someone said that they couldnt remember a greatest hits with the longevity of Guns since Madonna. There has been another GH with great longevity sinc Immaculate-the Beatles. Yes...exactly

Shocking that someone would try to undermine the success and longevity of The Immaculate Collection. The album logged 141 weeks on the BB 200 in its initial run (before catalog rules came about, where an album was removed from the chart after 2 years once it dropped below No. 100- why 1 "only" logged 104 weeks on before getting transferred to the catalog chart). To date, IMmaculate has logged 420 cumulative weeks on the BB 200 and Pop Catalog (top 50) charts. It's been ranked outside the top 50 for most of the past year, but continues to scan decent amounts weekly. The Beatles' 1 has been a phenomenal selling album, as it should be- it's the Beatles. Just like Madge's album has been a grand success. They's the templates for groups and females. Missing the point on multiple levels I think. I am not attacking Madonna, so try to relax. The Beatles 1 has not been out 420 weeks yet but has been consistently ranked higher than Madonna since it has been at catalog status. But the point is, this is an example of a hits album with longevity, released in the last several years that has sold well. In fact it is #10 in the soundscan era. The Madonna hits album sold a bunch as well. But just wanted to point out there are hits albums other than Madonna that also sell well. This is just one example.

LOve Plastic, use a brain, I didn't say more influentional in the pop genre. Madonna is a music icon who has been around over 20 years using sex and contraversy to be in the public. Shania is private, lives in seclusion and doesn't play the MTV game but Shania has just as many girls who want to grow up to be her whether in be in the country, pop or light pop genre. Shania is a music icon of a different sort, she is not crass or she doesn't crave the spotlight, her music and style does the talking. And I bet there are tons of more girls who would use Shania as a role model than Madonna.
And don't be so absurd to ask who has sold more. Madonna has been around 15 years longer and put out many more albums. Shania is the first woman in history to have back to back diamond albums and she has the best selling female album of alltime and she did all of this in a decade. I would say Shania's impact in immense.

Whoa nelly-you are one of "those" fans. Relax-Shania doesnt need you to be her warrior attacking and defending her in places that barely make sense and personally attacking everyone who may disagree or question your "logic"

well, she's not completely the first though. Mariah had 2 back to back studio releases that went diamond first(Music Box and Daydream), only there was a Christmas album in the middle that is one of only 7 holiday albums to certify at least 5M. So, technically, you are right and I don't want to take anything away from Shania, she's had a brilliant career. I just thought Mariah's facts deserved mentioning as well.
Also, referring to Mariah and Madonna as pop icons and Shania as a transcendent icon may be a hasty generalization. I mean, if you look at the music industry, they have given Shania grammys only in Country formats. Madonna has pop, dance, and non genre-based grammys, and Mariah has pop and r&b grammys. Furthermore, what makes her a template? Do the kids emulate her? If you look at the women in music these days, a huge number of them want Madonna's image, Mariah's voice, or both. I'm not even a fan of Madonna's, but I can still recognize her undeniable impact. Shania is less like Madonna and Mariah and more like a country version of BSB, Nsync, or Britney- she sold the hell out of some records in the late 90's and early 2000's, but in the end it is nothing we haven't seen already.

Are we missing any others? God knows GH albums from BSB and Britney wont come close to these artists (for a good reason-holy too soon in a career!) Highly successful hits albums that were released after Imacculate Collection were from: Bob Seger Garth Brooks Tom Petty Alan Jackson The previously mentioned Beatles album Shania Twain These are other examples that sold more than GNR and came out after Imacculate Collection and have all displayed longevity on the catalog chart. Note: This is not an attack on Madonna, just responding to the original statement.

willimp, you are joking right? Saying Shania is nothing different lmao!!! Shania is one of the most unique artists in the last 20 years. YOu are blinded if you think Shania is like Britney and Nsync. Shania brought a whole new sound to country music that crossed over and trancended the genre so Shania's impact was massive. I bet tons more girls would want to be Shania because Shania has fans of country, pop and other genres. How the hell is Shania like Britney? Shania writes her own music, created her own sound with her husband and did things her own way. I think you are blinded because you are not a country fan but Shania trancended that and it is much tougher to cross over from country to pop than just be a pop act like Madonna. YOu are taking tons of credit away from Shania and you are insulting her. Call me when Mariah or Maddona sell over 38 million worldwide of one cd like Shania.
And Maddona using sex and contraversy to get attention every 10 minutes makes her a joke. Shania brought something different to the table in pop and country and newsflash- there has been nobody who sounded like or acted like a Shania in music history. Many, many girls want to emulate Shania all over the world so your bias comments are false.

LOL Britney, N Sync & the Backstreet Boys were part of a fad that has passed its time. Shania Twain's music is still selling.
The opinions, that Madonna, Shania or Mariah are "templates" for females in the music industry are a bit biased. These artists are highly successful in there own particular genres but hardly "templates" for others.

Shania's great. She's accomplished things no one else will accomplish. She's made herself bigger than country music. I get it and I agree. And I was joking about the bsb, nsync thing because it was funny. But to give Shania credit is not to take anything away from the other artists who have had major impacts. If you can appreciate Mariah and Madonna and recognize their impact and their own records they've set, then I can go along with Shania in like manner. If you completely disregard all they have done, then you and I become just like every other board here where people go around looking for even the slightest criticism of their favorite artist so that they can do EVERYTHING in their power to prove them wrong. I fell into it, I admit it. I saw your comments and thought, "But wait, Mariah is the best and I must defend her at all costs." But it serves no purpose. You're going to defend your artist and I'm going to defend mine, and we both have numerous records and accolades we can reference to defend ourselves. So it's really just a stalemate. Moreover, it's probably incredibly annoying to see these kind of posts when people are looking for BB 200 info. so I apologize for that.

I wonder if people bought PCD for "Buttons" and realized it doesn't have Snoop Dogg on it.

Unless there is a boost from holiday sales, High School Musical is on track for about 3.5 million by year-end. No album, thus far, is in a position to catch up.

Sales honestly have nothing to do with overall cultural impact or iconic view. Garth Brooks is a popular country singer but when you think about it is not looked back as strongly culturally relevant or iconic. But his sales numbers are there and I think Shania is close to that.
Madonna is like a complete cultural icon and one of the biggest celebrity names period. She transcends music. Sorta like Serena Williams is bigger than her sport. Its not like Madonna's longevity and chart record is shabby either I think she holds her own over long periods of time often going left to what is popular.

Garth Brooks is the third most certified artist in history according to RIAA (behind Elvis & the Beatles) and would be higher if he hadn't signed his catalog over to Walmart. As far as Madonna goes, let's keep in mind what this thread title is: Billboard 200 w/SoundScan #'s 8/12/06 and under the thread topic, Madonna is ranked #174

Madonna is more famous for her image then her music.

Thats what sets her apart. yeah, let me know when shania has a hit that's something other than country (crossing over to AC). until then, she's not "all" genres. dont get me wrong, i love shania. and her achievements in COUNTRY music will never go unnoticed. and i think she helped create the pop/country genre that seems to be slowly dying lately. and everyone and their mother has Come On Over... but one huge cd does not an icon make. i think shania will live on to become more of a "tina turner icon" rather than an "aretha franklin icon."
