*Songs that I've added to my iPod.
WOW! What a week with an UNEXPECTED twist! For only the second time in history (and oddly enough, second time in under two months) two songs tie for the number one position. Of course, as in any event, the bullet breaks the tie, allowing for Lady Gaga and R. Kelly to take the number one position with "Do What U Want," tied in points with number two song, "Ride" by SoMo. "Do What U Want" also breaks a record this week as it zooms from the number eight position to number one, making it the biggest jump to number one in history. The record was previously held by Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," which skyrocketed to number one from number seven. This is also only the third time in history a song shot to number one from outside the top five. The other instance was Paramore's "Still Into You," which jumped six to one. Both "Ride" and "Do What U Want" surpass last week's number one, Katy Perry's "Unconditionally," which slips to number three despite gaining points! (Again, as reported last week, point totals near the top are drastically inflated right now, causing an extra gain or loss in just a few points can send the song skyrocketing or tumbling.) Below "Unconditionally," the top five is brand new. Also moving up many spots this week, Kacey Musgraves' "Follow Your Arrow" sits at number four. It is only one position away from matching the peak of "Merry Go 'Round." At number five is Ellie Goulding's "Burn," marking Ellie's third top five entry. Both previous entries, "Lights" and "Figure 8," went to number one. The three new top five entries kick out "Let Me Go," "Replay," and "Cool Kids."
Below the top five, Lorde's "Team" remains for a second week at number six and gains back points that it lost last week when it feel three to six. Pitbull and Ke$ha rise up to a new peak of number seven with "Timber." Echosmith's "Cool Kids" falls from two to eight this week and Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger's "Let Me Go" slips back down to its favorite position: number nine, although it gains points (yay, inflation!). Entering the top ten for the first time at number ten is Idina Menzel's "Let It Go." (Don't you love how two of the three similarly titled songs of the chart are right next to each other? If only Passenger were right by them.) "Let It Go" marks the first chart entry for Idina Menzel, the Broadway superstar, and the song also marks the first time a song coming directly from a musical hits the top ten. "Let It Go" is from Disney's
Frozen, the smash hit animated musical about a queen who has the power to create wintery weather through her hands. The key word there, though, is "directly." Anna Kendrick's "Cups" went to number four, and it comes from the musical
Pitch Perfect, however, "Cups" is actually a cover of "You're Gonna Miss Me" by Lulu & the Lampshades, which itself stems from the 1931 song "When I'm Gone" by A.P. Carter. "Let It Go" is completely original for
Frozen. "Let It Go" kicks out former top ten hit, "Replay" by Zendaya, which actually rebounded to number four from six last week, but tumbles to 11 this week, though its point loss is very minimal.
Below the top ten, "Replay" sits at number 11 with Katy Perry and Juicy J's "Dark Horse" directly below it. "Dark Horse" slips a spot to number 12, though it gains points. Ellie Goulding's "Mirror" creeps up to number 13, only one spot away from its original peak of 12 four weeks ago. Ciara's "Overdose" slips two spots to 14. Bastille's "Pompeii" moves up three spot to 15, earning a new peak. Slipping two spots to 16 and ending its unique chart trajectory of climbing one spot per week is Demi Lovato's "Neon Lights." Cassadee Pope remains at number 17 for a second week with "Wasting All These Tears." Slipping to 18 is Miley Cyrus' ten-week-number-one smash, "Wrecking Ball." Britney Spears remains at nubmer 19 for a second week with "Perfume." Entering the top 20 for the first time is Passenger's "Let Her Go," at number 20. "Let Her Go" knocks out Cher Lloyd and T.I.'s "I Wish" out of the top 20. It currently sits at number 24.
The chart sees several songs reaching new peaks this week below the top 20. Ellesello's "Play the Game" rises a spot to 21, One Direction's "Story of My Life" climbs to 22, P!nk's "Are We All We Are" jumps to 25, Avril Lavigne's "Give You What You Like" bumps up to 28, and "Do My Thang" creeps up to 36. It's also worth noting that Rihanna's "What Now" and Lorde's "Royals" both shift up one spot, furthering their incredible longevity. "Royals" is closing in on Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble." for being the most successful song since the chart's inception. Oddly enough, "Trouble" just took back that title from Ke$ha's "Crazy Kids" this week. It is currently the ninth most successful song behind "Trouble," "Kids," "Just Give Me a Reason," "Give Your Heart a Break," "Some Nights," "Call Me Maybe," "Catch My Breath," and "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."
The chart also sees an outstanding five debuts. Debuting at number 29 is Disclosure and Sam Smith's "Latch." "Latch" is the first chart entry for both artists in question. Debuting at 34 is HAIM's "The Wire." This is quite a huge feat. There have only been a handful of songs that managed to debut the same week that they were added. "The Wire" joins that list, but it's even crazier to think that it did that when it is discovered that "The Wire" was not added on a Sunday or Monday like most of the other songs on said list. "The Wire" was added on a Wednesday and scored enough points to debut in just four days! This is a very good sign for the song as it could be on track to set records and/or go number one in the future. Below it at
35 is Colbie Caillat's "Hold On." This is Colbie's second chart entry after "Favorite Song" peaked at 13 over the summer of 2012. Colbie would have also had a few former chart hits with "Bubbly," "Realize," "Little Things," "One Fine Wire," "Fallin' for You," and "I Never Told You" had the chart been around back then. Debuting at 37 is Maroon 5's "Lucky Strike." "Strike" marks Maroon 5's fifth chart entry after the four-in-a-row top ten hits "Payphone," "One More Night," "Daylight," and "Love Somebody." "Lucky Strike" is not an official single from the
Overexposed album, but it is getting enough airplay to hit the top 40 on hot AC right now, so I'm using that as an excuse to finally chart the best song from the album! Finally, debuting at 39 is Lily Allen's "Hard Out Here." This marks Lily's second chart entry and first as her original credit. She charted as a featured artist with P!nk on "True Love," but was credited as Lily Rose Cooper. Allen would have had several charting hits such as "Alfie," "The Fear," "Not Fair," "22," "Fuck You," "Everyone's At It," and "Never Gonna Happen" had the chart been around then. The five debuts kick out "Rock N Roll," "My Kind of Love," "Tennis Court," "Buzzcut Season," and "4x4."
