My iTunes library jumped to "Cleopatra" by accident, and it made me re-evaluate a lot of those leaks...I forgot how much diversity there is there. I'm more than satisfied with what we got out of Stronger, but I think there's a lot more range and "pop oomph" that many of us have expressed a wish for coming up. I know she said Cleopatra/Who's That Girl/Ready To Go were written for others, but there's real pop potential with those, and decidedly out of her comfort zone. They're clunky at times, but with polish I think she still has a really interesting pop spark in her that a lot of the leaks (that I haven't visited in a while) demonstrated. Cleopatra, Lover Stay, Ready to Go, Shut Your Pretty Face, Wash Rinse Repeat, Turn It Up Turn Me On all have some potentially really fierce and current instrumental ideas and foundations that could really work for her.

Earlier this week, we told you that Blake Shelton was offering one lucky fan an exclusive opportunity to fly to Los Angeles to attend a private television taping with Mr. Shelton himself. We’ve learned that Blake will be joined by Miranda Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, Reba McEntire and his mom, Dorothy Shackleford, at this taping, which just may get attendees into the holiday spirit a little early this year. The special will air on NBC (Date TBA), and is entitled “Blake Shelton’s Not So Family Christmas Special.”

Expect to hear songs from Blake’s Holiday album, Cheers, It’s Christmas, which features all those lovely ladies. They technically may all not be Blake’s family, but we have to laugh, as he’s enlisted his wife, his mom, and his manager’s step-mom and girlfriend. I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty dang “family” to me!

Stronger had been finished for months before the first single had been released. Do you think the long wait helped or hurt Kelly? Let's say you release the first single in the first week of June, the album is released the first week of September, the second single is released 2 weeks later, the third single is released late January/early February, and the fourth single is released late April/early May. Stronger would have had four singles and you'd have a few months break between Stronger's last single and the first single of the greatest hits album. Assuming the second single is the strongest you'd still benefit from Christmas sales. Looking back I don't understand why they waited and don't think it helped Kelly at all.

If anything, I remember being a bit surprised at the time that they didn't push back an extra month and give her a release either on Black Friday week or the week before (so that Black Friday would soften her second week drop). I'm not sure what advantage you think she would have gotten by releasing six weeks earlier than what she did...in fact, considering the 'slow' burn strategy that they aimed for + second quarter historically being a low period for sales, I'm glad she didn't release in September. I can't see MKIA being a good choice for the summer and her opening week might have actually been lower.

I do have my nitpicks about the era - sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if they'd gone with a different single and of course I would have liked to see them push a fourth single before rushing into a GH - but it's not like things were horribly mishandled or anything.

Also keep in mind that the game of executive musical chairs, on Sony's end, wasn't officially settled until July. So likely, they also did not want to start the era until all that was taken care of. It would have sucked if Stronger ended up suffering because of the old executives being apathetic on their way out the door and then the new executives not seeing it as worth the effort to revive what they deem an 'old' album. (I certainly felt that at least part of the reason Avril's album that year floundered was because it got caught up in the end of the label transition.) When I think of how happy Kelly seems to be with the guys there now I'm all the more grateful for the wait.
