Taylor will have a 3rd week at #1. Ne-Yo, Aerosmith and Now 44 are the big albums out next Tuesday.
A 4th week at #1 will not happen. That's One Direction's week along with Whitney, Christina, Susan, Green Day and the Rolling Sones.

I did a little math and here's what I came up with: Fearless sold 8,96% of its total during release week. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, sold 0,7% of its total during its release week. Speak Now, unlike her previous numbers, sold 24,97% of its total when it began its run in October of 2010. With all that factored in, I find it hard to believe red will have a hard time reaching 4m sold, let alone 3m. Speak Now didn't have legs because it didn't produce any significant hits on pop radio, therefore, its main support came from Country radio. Unlike that, Red has promise of producing at least 3 strong pop hits and 3 strong country hits, so, I really see it reaching 5m+ when all is said and done. if Red sold 25% of its total during this week, it would still sell 4.832.000 copies, and I dare predict it'll sell higher than that. 4.8 million in today's market? I don't think so. Let's not get waaaay ahead of ourselves. Are you aware of the sales totals of Taylor's albums? Speak Now has sold 4.2 million in today's market, and that's without any big pop hits. It's certainly not a given, but it's not by any means out of the question that Red could sell 5+ million in the next few years.

On one hand, the 1.21 million for "Red" in its first week is impressive. However, I wonder if there was the sufficient return on investment made on the dollars spent promoting it. I read somewhere the number $15 million. The total revenue generated is around $16-18 million based on $13.99/album. If the cost of the album is $4-$5, then Big Machine may have lost money during "Red" debut week. From the Billboard article on the breakdown of sales, the Papa John Pizza promotion bombed as only 8k albums were sold.

I'm highly doubtful Big Machine carried the full responsibility of that entire $15 million. During Speak Now, Target paid almost $8 million for the deluxe edition exclusivity and promotion for the album (the commercial and its tv spots and in store displays) and this go around they even sponsored her GMA concert and Ellen concert so the total was probably higher. Since they awarded iTunes first week exclusivity, they were the probably the ones to pick up the tab for the front page banners and ads (and it was a huge success for them). Walmart's edition was also an exclusive (and they were also selling other exclusive merchandise), as was all of the extra merchandise at Walgreens. And the Papa John's deal seemed to be another partnership with the way they were promoting.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if BMR ended up actively paying for very little of the promotion. Scott Borchetta is a business man unlike any other in the record business atm, it seems.

Now I keep reading that Red is going to outsell Speak Now. Let's get to that 4 million mark first before we even discuss that.

Yes, I'm happy to wait until we get to that mark to discuss it, but if you read your original post, you dismissed the possibility altogether. All I was saying is that's it's very much possible. You were speculating. We all have the right to speculate if we wish.

Just listening to Red and it's amazing (although 16 songs are a bit too much). Well done Taylor! This is the album that'll make her a global superstar.
And back to chart news... This was posted by Nick F1 on Buzzjack

^^^So this pretty much null and voids anyones argument that Taylor's effort is 'more impressive' than Britney's due to it being 2012.
95% of this list is from 2001-2012 (ie: the decline of overall sales). Heck, three of the top 4 are 2010-2012.
Obviously overall sales are down massively since 2000, but first weeks are not.

Seems like this is very circular. If you listed the top opening weeks, regardless of solo/group, male/female, it'd look different. #1-#7, I believe, would all be 2000-2002.
In 2000, the 5th best sales week was above the 1 million mark. In 2012, the 5th best sales week, I believe, was less than 400,000.
Not even trying to say Taylor > Britney but the top 20 list above cant possibly PROVE anything about the two 'sales climates'.
Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Norah Jones all had extraordinary first week sales, ranging from 2000-2012.

You're completely correct - the list above is ONE way of looking at a situation that, as many have pointed out, cannot be compared. As you indeed put across, changing from female to all artists changes this dramatically. Then again, given both are solo females, whose to say the above list isn't the best way to measure it...there are really endless arguments to it all, but ultimately, too many factors makes it near on impossible to compare. Thus, Taylor has done extremely well. But people cannot claim 'if this was 2000 she'd have beat Britney' as it simply cannot be proved, and there is just as much data against that theory as there is for it.

I know this Is a HITS article but...
How America's Sweetheart and Her Label Sold Over 1.2m Without Sales Gimmicks October 31, 2012
Taylor Swift’s mega-bow for Red has collected hosannas everywhere, and rightly so. But not enough notice has been paid to the fact that the superstar singer-songwriter and her team achieved this milestone without benefit of 99-cent, $2.99 or $3.99 sales, bundles or other gimmicks. Needless to say, we know from gimmicks.
This is a record that’s shattering a lot of records, so let’s get to those first. Red is the biggest first week, period, for an album since 2002 (when The Eminem Show exploded). It’s the #8 week-one seller in chart history and the second-biggest of all time for a female artist (Britney Spears' 2000 monster Oops ... is still #1). Swift is the only female artist and the fourth artist ever to chart back-to-back million-selling first weeks (we vaguely remember the other three, but we're a little baked right now. We'll get back to you.).There are undoubtedly more milestones to be tracked, but let’s get to the sales specifics.Swift’s 1.208 million first week consisted over 38% digital sales (the latter entirely via an iTunes exclusive with no preorders). In fact, Red has set a new worldwide iTunes record for first-week downloads. Four singles (one per week) were released as a countdown in the month leading up to the release--so the Complete My Album program on the Apple e-tail giant worked like layaway, with Swift’s rabid fanbase having plunked down a big chunk of the album price by street date.Target offered two versions of the album, the standard at $9.99 and a deluxe with (three exclusive studio tracks and three exclusive remixes) for $14.99; the deluxe version oustold the standard by a 3-to-1 margin.
This merits mention in part because Lady Gaga’s 1.1m forBorn This Way last year, while certainly nothing to sneeze at, achieved 40% of its total on the strength of a 99-cent blowout at Amazon, and Madonna netted over 50% of her 358k thanks to a Ticketmaster bundle.Republic ruler Monte Lipman, though running on generator power from his home (UMG’s New York offices remain closed in Sandy’s wake), was happy to chime in on this happier kind of storm—and the hyper-efficient Big Machine that helped generate it. “It’s amazing,” he says, “especially since a large majority of sales have been for the deluxe version.”“In addition to the phenomenal album Taylor delivered, Scott Borchetta and his team have been strategizing for a year now,” notes Lipman. “They’ve used innovative methods and what they’ve done is absolutely exceptional. The dynamic is that we support them at Top 40, but they are fiercely independent and competitive. This [sales achievement] is really them. By the way, do you know anyone who might be interested 235 slightly damp 'I Heart NY' T-shirts?”Lipman also emphasizes Big Machine’s superb international campaign, resulting in Swift’s biggest ex-U.S. bow so far. Red debuted at #1 in the U.K. and has seen astronomical sales worldwide; it topped the iTunes charts in the U.K., Canada, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Malaysia, Ireland, Argentina, New Zealand, Ireland and Australia, among other distant lands. In other news, Taylor Swift is real purdy.

I made a comment in another thread (or was it earlier in this thread). Lady Gaga sold 1.1 million albums. Can we stop with the astrisks. Amazon sold the album for 99 cents because they knew it'd be a huge seller and attract many buyers. Enough with the buts and notes about its 'cheating'. I've generally avoided stanning here but it's annoying for every single mention of BTW in the last month (between Babel and Red) to include its Amazon deal. B**** sold more than a million albums in a week.
P.S. this is not directed at specific pulse members. I've generally only seen this in Billboard/HITS/Yahoo articles.

Market share, to me, is the most interesting and impressive fact about this week: Red had a 19.2% share, the new record high.

Er...Papa John's wasn't a gimmick? Not taking away from Taylor by any means but this article is acting like pricing is the only thing that counts as a gimmick or 'trick,' and that is not true. The marketing for this album was insane. That's nothing to be ashamed of so the hyperbole isn't necessary (not directed at you chartfreak, but at the writer of this article). And really they're just doing it to pick at Gaga again. I know that is a 'never live it down' moment for her but the joke's rather old now. Are you aware of the sales totals of Taylor's albums? Speak Now has sold 4.2 million in today's market, and that's without any big pop hits. It's certainly not a given, but it's not by any means out of the question that Red could sell 5+ million in the next few years. Let's not think in the next 2-3 years. I'm thinking of 2012 and 2013 sales. Why do people have to "blow up" numbers? HITS said 1.2 million and people still insisted on 1.3 million-1.5 million. Now I keep reading that Red is going to outsell Speak Now. Let's get to that 4 million mark first before we even discuss that. Only one person here said 1.5 million and when someone else brought it up she said it was just a speculative joke, not to be taken seriously. Few Taylor fans even broached the 1.3 million number, except to maybe mention it would be cool if she did it but they didn't expect it and were quite content to bask in the fact that she opened with a million twice. In fact, I was immensely more annoyed by the NON-Taylor fans who kept needling and saying "okay, cue the 'let's see if Soundscan is different/this would have been so much more than Britney if it were 2000' posts" when almost none (maybe none at all) of the Taylor fans were even doing that! For the most part the Taylor fans just don't feel the need to be extra, except for one record-obsessed person in particular; but he's just one person, not an entire fanbase. Re: what Red will sell overall - again, not everyone is declaring Red WILL outsell Speak Now, but pointing out that it has a good chance to, or to at least match it. And they're basing this on reasonable points of comparison IMO - she has already opened with slightly larger numbers, she has the holidays to buoy her sales for the next two months just like SN did, and this album has viable country and pop hits to give it legs (unlike SN, which had no big pop hits). Of course nothing is guaranteed, but 2010 and 2012 are pretty much the same sales climate, so it is not improbable to think that if she did it once in this market that with a properly handled Red era she could do it again. I'm figuring she will be at or very close to 3 million by the end of the year so selling another 1-1.5 million over the course of 2013 isn't really that much of a stretch.

As far as I can tell, the artist with the best trio of one-weeks is Garth Brooks, whose 3rd-highest album sold 897k in a week. But if you count only studio albums, it'd be Eminem, whose 3rd-highest sold 741k in a week.
So i guess I'm rooting for Taylor to at least sell around 900k in a week next album. Unless, of course, Eminem has 2 smashes upon release, in which case he could be competition.

I love that there are those who are gloating about an album released twelve years ago during perhaps one of the most lucrative times in the music industry maintaining its record against an album released during the most disastrous point for the music industry by a mere 100,000 copies. I love both girls, but do people not realize how silly that looks? lol Yet every artist that released music during that time did not sell 1M+ copies, though. It also looks silly to downplay one's accomplishment and pass it off like they are being diplomatic. I think if someone breaks or maintains a record then people should be able to enjoy it. I mean LOL at all the Tswift fans that were 'gloating' already claiming the record because her last album started out projecting 700k and ended up with 1.1M. Just because Tswift didn't break the record, doesn't mean people are not allowed to celebrate the female artist with the highest debut week sales. It's not easy maintaining a record. Anyways, fanbases for Tswift and Britney should be celebrating this week.
