I think we're going to see a lot of Frank Ocean, Japandroids, Kendrick Lamar, Fiona Apple, The xx, Grizzly Bear and maybe Miguel. I see Frank coming out on top.

I'd rather have Jacques' list from the Prophet blog than that list. :)

I've been told that Melody's Echo Chamber's album is brilliant.

WOW, I've barely heard any of the albums on those lists. Except Frank Ocean, which bored me to tears and Kendrick Lamar, which is one of the best hip-hop albums I've ever heard.

Jack White is getting so overrated these days. jmho. Frank Ocean's Pyramids is one of a few songs on those lists really impressed me.

There are some excellent albums on these lists. It's refreshing to see quality albums top the lists versus trash like Rihanna just for the sake of mainstream appeal. Lists like those can't actually be taken seriously.

Well based on initial reactions Channel Orange was the most acclaimed album of the year. Let's see if the T10s follow suit...

These lists always favor the more obscure, indie-rock/hip-hop/etc. acts, so I'm not unsurprised at all that there's no mention of pop artists like Taylor or Rihanna. Of these artists, I'd recommend Alabama Shakes, Frank Ocean, and Jessie Ware for sure (they should all make my year-end top ten), along with Tame Impala, Beach House, First Aid Kit, Of Monsters And Men, and Miguel. Here's a rather diverse list from Ted Gioia: tedgioia.com/bestalbumsof2012.htmlI haven't listened to (or heard of) hardly any of those, but will endorse Punch Brothers and David Byrne & St. Vincent.

I'm amazed that the NME managed to resist putting an Oasis album at number one.

The only thing I can positively comment on is USA Today's placement of Kaleidoscope Dream. It's so broad in style that I can imagine your standard list-making geek determined months ago that it should narrowly miss the top ten or something. Glad to see mentions of Bobby Womack and the Chromatics, too. Kendrick Lamar's "real rap" leaves a mean impression as he appears to be the only person outside of the annual circle jerk fixture Kanye West to represent his genre. That strikes me as odd. So anyway, SPRΞΞ's right: the music zeitgeist according to the chumps at Paste, MOJO, etc. is dim, it sucks and I want no part of it.

I really like NME's list. Grimes' album is deserving of a top 3 ranking, especially... her album is heaven.

Channel Orange rightfully coming in the Top 5 on all the lists so far. Amazon breaks that record, but it's at #6: kwn.me/amazon12Top ten of that 100 for those too lazy to click through: 1. Of Monsters And Men - My Head Is An Animal2. The Lumineers - The Lumineers3. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist4. Mumford & Sons - Babel5. fun. - Some Nights6. Frank Ocean - Channel Orange7. Michael Kiwanuka - Home Again8. Imagine Dragons - Night Visions9. Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls10. JD McPherson - Signs & SignifiersGood choices here--five of those will be on my year-end chart.

I feel like these lists are mostly just music reviewers/critics' way of trying to prove how much cooler they are than the general public.

The critics' lists often have albums from acts who have not enjoyed a heckuva lot of commercial success. There is music out there beyond what's on the radio or the charts. :)

I know. But there's no need to discount an artist because people buy their records and radio plays their music.

I know. But there's no need to discount an artist because people buy their records and radio plays their music. They aren't (in most cases). Just so happens that a lot of these music journalists/magazines don't simply focus on top 40 music. Even if you look at Pitchfork Year-End Singles lists from the last 10 years, you'll see Beyonce, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Adele, Eminem, OutKast, Britney Spears, etc. do quite well.
