I wish the U.S. had the notion of the UK's "Christmas #1". I know it has become a gimmick over the years, but it raises the profile of the music charts so dramatically in the public's consciousness over there....

I know it has become a gimmick over the years, but it raises the profile of the music charts so dramatically in the public's consciousness over there.... I agree. It brings such a breath of fresh air in their charts at the end of the year, even though now it's all Simon Cowell and random charity single #4525. I was trying to compile a list of what would be the US Xmas #1's, but I got very confused as to which chart date I should use lol.

I think Billboard is missing the boat not trying to promote a Christmas #1 - it would be terrific PR for their brand, and would give the Hot 100 an image boast over the Mediabase charts (which the public is only exposed to via Ryan Seacrest, correct?) I think that in our age, BB should change their chart dates (the "issue date" is now so passé; BB is hardly on any newsstand) so that the Christmas #1 would be reflected in the chart date that includes Christmas. Date problem = solved.
As it is, the only 'comparable award' the US has would be the #1 song of the year, which has very little public excitement.

A Christmas #1 would be kind of pointless in the US though because the chart is compiled of streaming, airplay and sales. Where as the UK chart is purely sales, so it makes for a much more interesting battle.

Past Christmas #1s for the US: 2011: LMFAO - Sexy and I Know It (Digital/Hot 100) 2010: Bruno Mars - Grenade (Digital/Hot 100) 2009: Ke$ha - TiK ToK (Digital/Hot 100) 2008: Lady Gaga - Just Dance (Digital); Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (Hot 100) 2007: Flo Rida - Low (Digital/Hot 100) 2006: Fergie - Fergalicious (Digital); Beyoncé - Irreplaceable (Hot 100) 2005: D4L - Laffy Taffy (Digital/Hot 100) 2004: Snoop Dogg - Drop It Like It's Hot (Digital); Mario - Let Me Love You (Hot 100)
That's as far back as you can go. Well, sorta. There's a gap between Single Sales and Digital Sales where sales were too low to really matter, so...
If I had to be money, this will be added on for this year: 2012: Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble. (Digital); Bruno Mars - Locked Out of Heaven (Hot 100)

Also, the vast majority of people have no burning desire to know what's #1 on any chart.
If I ever bring up something being #1 with most people, they're like "oh, that's nice" and move on. The typical person probably only thinks of "what songs my favorite station plays a lot" or "what songs I hear at the club a lot" to form their knowledge of what's popular. Oh, maybe "what song my friends on Facebook keep talking about" too.

Are you mentioning charts like the Hot 100, or things like "The artist with the most weeks over 243k on the digital songs chart who also is from a Pennsylvanian town that moved to Tennessee and is dating someone from One Direction?"

I want to say something that would get me a warning, so I'll refrain.
I will pretend that you said something that doesn't infuriate me, and was instead a legitimate non-trollbait question. I say "X is #1 this week," for example. Which is OBVIOUS from what I said from "something being #1."
I haven't recited any arguably obscure stats for over a month. I have however in that period on multiple occasions asked people to stop acting like every single thing I say is an obscure stat with many addenda and clauses. So I'm just going to start to report posts that I feel are made to aggravate me.

Anne Hathaway has a hit on her hands. That song should be released to pop radio.

AIWFICY should see an even bigger gain tomorrow, and hit around 50m BDS audience for the week. It should crack top 20 on the Hot 100. :)

I can't really see I Dreamed A Dream getting much traction on radio outside of AC. Anne Hathaway is a little lot cooler than Susan Boyle but it's kind of far from where contemporary music is right now. I mean, if Skyfall failed to sustain massive airplay then what hope is there for a song from a musical that's 25+ years old?

Last week We Are Never Ever was #39 on Digital Songs, and it stands at #19 on iTunes right now for no discernible reason. I wonder if Xmas is going to be an even bigger week for Taylor than I imagined. Her interview on 60 minutes reaired on Sunday night.

"I Dreamed a Dream" would do absolutely nothing on radio aside from maybe scratching the top 20 on AC due to Oscar buzz. For one, it's a cover from a musical. Secondly, it's absolutely nothing close to what radio plays at the moment. Susan Boyle's version was much bigger than Anne's is at this point, and radio never jumped on it besides for AC, so...
