Week Ending Jan. 6, 2013: The First Top 10 Hit of 2013

“Scream & Shout” by will.i.am featuring Britney Spears is the first song to enter the top 10 in 2013. It’s the 14th top 10 hit for will.i.am; the 12th for Spears. Spears first cracked the top 10 in December 1998 with “…Baby One More Time.” will.i.am first cracked the top 10 in August 2003 with the Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is The Love?” (featuring Spears’ former beau, Justin Timberlake).
This is will.i.am’s first top 10 hit as a solo artist in the top-billed position. It follows three top 10 hits on which he was the featured artist: Fergie’s “Fergalicious” (#2 in 2007), Flo Rida’s “In The Ayer” (#9 in 2008) and Usher’s “OMG” (#1 in 2010).
It’s the first time that Spears has held the featured spot on a top 10 hit. (I’m not counting Rihanna’s “S&M” toward Spears’ top 10 tally. Spears was featured on a remix that was popular for a time, but that’s not the same as being featured on the original or most popular version of a song.)
“Scream” and “Shout” are both venerable song titles. “Scream” by Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson reached #5 in 1995. Two different songs titled “Shout” have made the top 10. Joey Dee & the Starlighters’ cover of the Isley Brothers’ “Shout—Part 1” hit #6 in 1962. Tears For Fears’ entirely different “Shout” reached #1 in 1985.
“Scream & Shout” tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s from will.i.am’s upcoming fourth solo studio album, #willpower, which is due Feb. 4.
Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out Of Heaven” tops the Hot 100 for the fifth straight week. This is the first time that a hit by a male solo artist (excluding collabos) has had five or more weeks at #1 since Flo Rida’s “Right Round” had six weeks on top in 2009. (Ke$ha sang a background vocal on that smash, but it’s not a formal collabo.)
Rihanna’s “Diamonds” edges back up to #2. The song holds at #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for the 14th week. That’s the longest that any song has held the top spot since Maxwell’s “Pretty Wings” had 14 weeks on top from August to November 2009. It’s the longest run for a hit by a female solo artist since Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You” had 15 weeks on top from January to April 2006.
Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble.” dips from #2 to #3. The song sold 326K digital copies this week. This is its third week with sales north of 300K. Swift is just the second female artist to top 300K in weekly sales three or more times (as a lead artist). She follows Katy Perry, who achieved the feat with two different hits: “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg) and “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West). Those songs both topped 300K in weekly sales four times. Will Swift equal that mark next week? Stay tuned.
“Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz leaps from #10 to #5. The song is a top 20 hit on both the Alternative and Rhythmic charts, which demonstrates its broad appeal.
Phillip Phillips’ “Home” jumps from #9 to #6, which is its highest ranking to date. It’s already the fourth best-selling song ever by an Idol alum. I’m starting to think that it will replace Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” as the leader. “Home” has sold 3,484,000 copies. “Stronger” has sold 4,035,000. “Home” sold 196K copies just this week, so it can close that gap pretty quickly. Next week, “Home” will top Jordin Sparks’ “No Air” (a collabo with Chris Brown, 3,511,000). It may need two weeks to pull ahead of Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” (3,676,000).
The Grammy Angle: “Locked Out Of Heaven” has a good chance at a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year next year. Several other songs in the current top 10 were entered in this year’s Grammy process and thus can’t compete for that top prize next year. Among them: Rihanna’s “Diamonds,” The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey” and Phillip Phillips’ “Home.”

Digital sales rank: #4 (203K)…Maroon 5's “One More Night” dips from #8 to #9 in its 29th week on the chart. This is its 21st week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #15 (111K)…Flo Rida’s “I Cry” rebounds from #11 to #10 in its 15th week on the chart. The song has climbed as high as #6. This is its eighth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (121K).
Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week. PSY’s “Gangnam Style” drops from #6, ending a 12-week in the top 10. Ke$ha's “Die Young” drops from #7, ending an 11-week run in the top 10.
“Don’t You Worry Child” by Swedish House Mafia featuring John Martin tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week.
Nicki Minaj’s “Starships” tops the 4 million mark in digital sales this week. The song took 46 weeks to reach this milestone. That’s a little faster than Minaj’s breakthrough smash, “Super Bass,” which took 48 weeks to sell 4 million.
The Killers’ 2005 hit “Mr. Brightside” tops the 3 million mark this week. It’s the band’s best-selling hit to date. The song reached #10 in June 2005.
Eric Church’s “Springsteen” this week becomes the 30th country song to top the 2 million mark in digital sales. It’s Church’s first 2-million-seller. It’s the biggest selling country song that references a music icon in its title. Runners-up: Taylor Swift’s “Tim McGraw” (1,443,000) and Heidi Newfield’s “Johnny & June” (761K).
Jason Aldean lands his sixth million-seller as “Take A Little Ride” tops the 1 million mark.
