I am always surprised by Rihanna's single sales. They almost always seem like they should be higher. Before anyone gets defensive yes I realize 2.5 million isn't the end of the world by any means and most would kill for that. Her songs just always seem bigger to me than the actual single numbers.

Right, idk total WFL sales but it's only 4x platinum and TTT (album) only sold barely over 1 million. Not bad or anything, but for the airplay MONSTER that was WFL, that's just way too low.

WFL is at like 4.7, which might seem bad but TTT sold more than the albums of everyone else in the year end top 10 songs, other than 1D I think.

A bit off-topic but is there an updated list of acts who have sold the most digital songs?
Rihanna might not have one big smash but she's very consistent.

Before anyone gets defensive yes I realize 2.5 million isn't the end of the world by any means and most would kill for that. Her songs just always seem bigger to me than the actual single numbers. That's because her songs usually get high due to airplay. She gets huge Top 40 and Rhythmic play, and then she often gets good Urban play. That combination is hard to top in terms of impressions. Her downloads are decent, but almost never as much as you'd think. "Diamonds" has sold less than "Home," "Ho Hey," "We Are Never...," etc. despite more airplay. And you can't use the album sales excuse here either.

Thanks for the nostalgia, ry4n. :) A note: In that Hot 100 Airplay top 5, "My Heart Will Go On"was released as a CD/cassette single- just not for that particular week.

Rihanna might not have one big smash but she's very consistent. Katy Perry has been a lot more consistent than her, and way above the 4 milliion mark at that. Rihanna has never seen a solo single of hers cross 5 million downloads, despite getting huge airplay. None of the #1s from her Loud album even sold 3 million and they all got to #1 by lucky chance. 'Diamonds' too.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. There's no excuse for her to be having that much airplay and not sell 5 million singles when everyone else has.

I'm pretty sure they may barely have now, 3 years later, but not during their initial run. WMN a 2nd single that went to #1 before the lead single, not crossing 3 million is a poor showing. Not to mention 'Rude Boy' still at 2.8 million.

Rihanna is currently sitting "lucky" at #1 again on iTunes. Whatever. Yes, because of the Grammy performance and video release. I believe it was not even top 50 on iTunes despite receiving Pop airplay before that.

Thrfit Shop is still #1 combined on iTunes and ahead of it in airplay now, so no.

Rihanna is currently sitting "lucky" at #1 again on iTunes. Whatever. Yes, because of the Grammy performance and video release. I believe it was not even top 50 on iTunes despite receiving Pop airplay before that. It has just over 20 mil AI as of today with no video, so it's not a surprise it wasn't top 50 on itunes. It regards to "luck". I doubt it was anything to do with that for a couple of reasons; 1. It's Rihanna. When she promotes new songs they tend to do well/see huge boosts. 2. People really like the song. It also helps that it is a different side to Rihanna than what we've seen recently from her. While Rihanna may not have huge digital sellers (with the exception of WFL), she has many 2 million+ sellers and she also shifts a decent amount of albums along with them. She hasn't had an album sell less than 1 million copies in the US since her 2nd album (not including her most recent as it is still early in its chart life).
