with the most downloaded song in America what I think she meant #1 on iTunes currently, not best selling song of all time. Unless she magically turned into Fergie idk.

The best selling digital artist is either Rihanna, Flo Rida or Katy Perry I presume.

How do we know Rihanna is the "best selling digital artist of all time"?
Why wouldn't it be Taylor Swift?

Both Only Girl and S&M have sold at least three million. With the amount of music that Rihanna puts out in comparison to Katy, she is alot more consistent. Plus 3+ million for one week #1s is not a poor showing, in my opinion. It is when the songs all had #1 or top 3 at least placement on the Hot 100 Airplay and Pop chart. They all had a video, hype, huge radio play and promotion. Heck 'S&M' even had a remix with Britney to further that lucky 1 week at #1 it got.

+ Lil Wayne and his million features and Taylor with her million album tracks/countdown singles/etc are definitely up there too.

Probably yes.
Regarding Taylor Swift, I have no idea about her digital sales. She is probably by far the best album seller though.

1. Rihanna (47,571,000) 2. Black Eyed Peas (42,405,000) 3. Eminem (42,290,000) 4. Lady Gaga (42,078,000) 5. Taylor Swift (41,821,000) 6. Katy Perry (37,620,00) 7. Lil Wayne (36,788,000) 8. Beyonce (30,439,000) 9. Kanye West (30,242,000) 10. Britney Spears (28,665,000)
^ First week of January 2012. Taylor is probably closer but Rihanna had a decent chunk of WFL, WHYB, Diamonds, and Take Care since then.

Rihanna is currently sitting "lucky" at #1 again on iTunes. Whatever. Yes, because of the Grammy performance and video release. I believe it was not even top 50 on iTunes despite receiving Pop airplay before that. So? Many people here bitch that their fave artists do not do any promotion for their singles. Rihanna did and it helped. Good for her!

Eminem #1, BEP #2, Britney #3?

The Soundscan 2012 thread(can't seem to find here - wonder if it got deleted?) Anyway....the original report online had no update for 2012 unfortunately

BEP is at only around 5 million less than Rihanna with half the singles/hits in the digital era. Enough said.

Rihanna doesn't have any smash digital sales. Compared to her radio play, her smash hits are definitely underwhelming in the sales department. However, she has many consistent hits, sales-wise, contributing to a huge total. This is spurred on by the fact that she never takes a break, like all the other top artists. She also has a few huge features which I believe count towards her total.
So, like many have said before, she does a consistent job and never stops releasing new material.
I think, if she had taken a break between TTT and Unapologetic, WFL could have seen bigger recurrent play and bigger sales. Same with other past hits. The problem is she never takes any breaks, so her recurrent play keeps getting relegated to the newer songs, so her biggest hits lose out on heavy recurrent/gold play like most other artists. I think that's *part* of why she doesn't have a single huge song digitally, but also just that she doesn't have huge sales overall.

Rihanna doesn't have any smash digital sales. Compared to her radio play, her smash hits are definitely underwhelming in the sales department. This is all that matters. As for the consistency part, there's no excuse for her not selling like Katy or GaGa who both have multiple 5+ million digital sellers from the same album era. So I don't buy it. And both of them also sold more albums than Rihanna in those instances.

Rihanna probably doesn't have a 5 million selling single on her own because she has 20 singles released per year...

BEP is at only around 5 million less than Rihanna with half the singles/hits in the digital era. Enough said. She's the #1 digital seller, how is that not good? She may not have too many huge digital songs, but her hits don't get much recurrent play either due to her releasing a new song literally every month or two since 2005. But they always do well during their chart run, case in point: Stay being #1 right now. Also I'm not sure how much this influences things but Rihanna never does well on HAC. WFL was her first song to go top 10 there, while every TD single went top 2. Katy's singles actually do better in airplay than Rihanna's, WMN for example was only #4 on pop, most of its airplay was from Urban which isn't a big single sales drive.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Katy and Gaga the ONLY two artists to have multiple 5 million sellers (or maybe just the only female solo artists?). Neither has had one since ET and Bad Romance, though.

I believe it was not even top 50 on iTunes despite receiving Pop airplay before that. ??? It was like #30 on pop. Do you expect every song to be top 10 the second a pop station touches it? She performed it, people heard it and liked it so they started buying it. Now it's #1, because it's selling well.

Adele - Rolling In The Deep, Someone Like You BEP - I Gotta Feeling, Boom Boom Pow LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem, Sexy And I Know It Gaga - Just Dance, Poker Face, Bad Romance Flo Rida - Low, Right Round Bruno - JTWYA, Grenade Katy - ET, Firework, Cali Gurls, IKAG(?), Hot N Cold
+ Ke$ha if Right Round counts
Still..

IKAG isn't 5 mill, I'm pretty sure. Around 4.4 I think.

There's just so many 5 mil sellers these days... I've completely lost track. I remember when Low was the first song to ever sell 5 mil and it was such a big deal. Anywho, Love The Way You Lie is a 5 mil seller, so that's effecctively her biggest selling hit...

I wonder if features count in the total I posted. If the don't then that's another 10-15 million at least.
