I hope you are right, and songs going viral like GS and HS are rare. Based on what I see on YouTube's Top10 videos, teen pop and hip-hip dominate. Sadly, the music I like best, Alternative, is not helped. Thus, "Radioactive" which is doing well on the digital sales and on-demand charts, took a tumble last week. Radioactive only dropped 4 spots to 37, mostly from the Grammy effect. It went as high as 11 on iTunes so it will rebound

Great, just when Alternative was doing well in Pop, just another way to fuck alt/rock out of being played on pop if you ask me :/

Again, not usually a conspiracy theorist, but I just got the latest issue in the mail where the chart changed, and I'm perplexed.
The cover is polybagged, with a special glossy cover, and it is extensively die-cut so that the figure of Baauer is exposed. The copy on the cover reads: "How Baauer and the Harlem Shake went from YouTube sensation to Historic Hot 100 #1." No big deal, usually, but for the fact that the chart was assembled on Wednesday, right? The magazine was mailed out Friday morning. Do you know (from a production standpoint) how long it takes to budget, plan and execute these unusual and expensive enhancements on a magazine cover? Usually weeks, certainly not hours. Its almost as if they had planned to have this be #1.........

Holy shit, I just predicted NEXT week's #1, it's going really viral so it MUST be #1, right?
It's people dubbing part of the chorus in Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" to goats screaming like humans!!
Baaah, Baaaah or eeeeehhhh eeeeehhhhh Trouble, Trouble Trouble.
"I Knew You Were A Goat" awesome. Can't fucking wait.
My prediction for next next week is the new Epic Rap Battles of History (actually, that would be pretty neat..)

LOL so many people still mad at this? I am 100% for this change, even if it means that the chart is going to be dominated by crappy viral songs.

"Harlem Shake" had such a huge lead though that I'm sure they new very early on it would be number one, and started prepping that cover early in the week. It couldn't have been any earlier than that because the "Harlem Shake" was nothing a mere two weeks ago.

So to summarize: (and do we even know this stuff?)
1. What videos actually count toward the hot 100? Official, fan, clips?
2. Just videos watched in the US count for billboard? How do they know?

Disclaimer: Many listings here were at one time sensitive topics to one person or another. The fact they are listed here again does not mean I intend to restart sensitive discussions. This is simply intended to be a fun look back at what the 'hot' topics have been and to point out that the youtube discussion belongs in this category.
For example:
The word "giveaway" in the Madonna listing is not meant to reignite an old discussion. The original discussion was about "giveaways" plain and simple(this is why the thread blew up in the first place). Whether it actually was or it wasn't a 'giveaway' is irrelevant to this post. I was simply trying to describe the thread in as few words as possible.

All of these as long as the song is authorized to be used. 2. I believe it is only the US video streams thar are counted. When I log into YouTube it shows "CA" in superscript beside the YouTube symbol to indicate my computer is in Canada.

But international influence definitely increases because popular videos from everywhere in the world show up on YouTube links, thus more visibility. Also, how do you know if a video is authorized?

Not sure how YouTube polices copyright violations. With the new chart rules music companies may be more willing to let private citizens use popular songs in their videos. Going forward, I can see older songs charting on the HOT100 if a YouTube goes viral leading to digital sales as well as YouTube streaming. "Harlem Shake" entered the chart at #1 without radio support or on-demand streaming.

Thanks for poisting that top 10- but the MDNA reference should be reworded, as there were no giveaways with such high-priced tickets and ticket buyers had to take action to get the album. :)
As we saw with "Harlem Shake," that insane number of streams probably won't be a common thing, as evidenced by the gap between itself and No. 2. Just for those novelty-type acts that introduce a fad of the moment.

Which of the most-commented on threads were the most controversial? the ones with the most comments I can't imagine Whitney Houston dying or Womanizer jumping to #1 were as controversial as some of those other ones (could be wrong, of course).

I chose the word "popular" rather than "controversial"

For some reason, I don't remember the Gaga thread being THAT popular. It caused a ton of discussion, sure, but the Mariah/Barbra/Paramore thread is infamous.
