Damn Single Ladies would have ruled for a while with this new calculation. I'm not bothered either way by the change.

As far as I can tell, there is no "official video" for this song on YouTube. This version is official. How would you be able to tell that, though? Are they going to sit there are go through every view and compare IP addresses? I don't know what they're doing. I doubt whoever is tracking the plays is manually doing that, but it strikes me as feasible that there would be a way to program some method of detection that isn't fooled by artificially-boosted views. Like I said, I'm curious to see what information Billboard will be giving us about the way they've implemented this. I imagine they'll be bombarded with questions; hopefully they'll throw us a bone and give us decent answers. EDIT: But isn't pretty much every ClearChannel deal a paid advertisement (it even says the song is brought to you courtesy of [Fill In The Blank] Records) and Billboard has been counting that towards Hot 100 airplay in recent years??? Yes, but that's why they have the disclaimers attached to the songs.

This explains why youtube fixed their viewing system a few weeks back. I definitely think it should've been included but the ratio is crazy high...of course non paid steams are going to generate significantly more interest than streams that people have to finance in one form or another.
So if I put a video on YouTube and a ton of people watch it, I could make the HOT100. LOL!
I'm all for democratization of the charts but this is rediculous.

Lol. 103 million streaming points compared to 10.1 million by Thrift Shop.
Harlem Shake for 52 weeks at number one

So Harlem Shake has 10x the points as the #2 song on the "YouTube views streaming whatever it's called" chart..

So... I guess the tracking system is filtering out only the U.S. views. Going by the numbers for some others (i.e. "Stay"), does that mean a heckuva lot of views on YouTube are coming from outside the USA? I wonder if there's a filter from picking up one computer user who actively refreshes and watches and watches and watches.

Yes, but that's why they have the disclaimers attached to the songs. Disclaimer or not, it's still bought airplay that counts toward the Hot 100 (but somehow isn't payola because...everyone is up front about it? But I digress...). What's so much different/worse about including "artificial" Youtube views in the new Hot 100? Now fangirls/boys can join in manipulating the Hot 100, too, instead of it only being the record labels who get that opportunity.

Now we have to convince each and every one of our friends to shoot a video of their own to the songs and maybe we'll be able to overthrow "Harlem Shake"! :kii:

Heck, if I want Imagine Dragons or whoever I'm into at the moment at number one, I might as well make a video for the song and title it "BIGGEST HARLEM SHAKE 1 MILLION PEOPLE"

However, there is one good thing that could come out of this. A lot of labels will be forcing their artists to step it up and make more viral-worthy videos. I also imagine many labels putting up official lyric videos to an entire album from its release date. (A la The Truth About Love)

I'm waiting for when Billboard adds passively mentioning song titles and/or singing lines from popular songs to your real life friends to the formula.

They'll implant chips in our heads at birth that will track how many times a week we mention a song. I'll be the one laying in bed at night repeating the song title over and over until I fall asleep. Then just to mess with them, one week I'll just start repeating "Not Myself Tonight by Kidz Bop Kidz" 100,000 times daily.

Although it makes sense to include Youtube video streams, I have to wonder about a formula that puts a song at #1 in a country of 300+ million people, that is not #1 in sales, rarely heard on the radio, and has not dented the on-demand streaming chart.
"Thrift Shop" is #1 in sales by a comfortable over a music superstar, is #4 (and soon to be #1) on radio, and is #1 on the on demand streaming chart. It "only" got more than 7 million youtube views, but because it did not go viral, it is relegated to #2. Does not make rational sense.

I love that they're incorporating video views, but their formula is obviously wrong if a song that only a few million people actually know unless they caught onto the viral craze early is #1 over a song that millions of people know and love.
