Although the majority of it is dated as hell, Rainbow remains my favorite Mariah album.

Yesterday was Rainbow's 14th anniversary, Mariah put up this banner on her facebook: I've been loving these. They create this sense of nostalgia around her music that I really like. YAASSSS! Mariah always hooks us up with stuff like this. I love it!

Yesterday I had the random thought that perhaps Mariah's "pip idea" was some sort of tribute to Michael Jackson (thus his picture on the wall behind her) and Whitney Houston. Maybe that's when Stevie was brought in to take part. Someone then reminded me Whitney was initially supposed to sing on "I Just Can't Stop Loving You." It would be pretty cool if they were actually working on a cover of that song.

She's singing a Jayo Felony/Method Man/DMX song there. I wonder if that's just random, or if she samples the song on the new album.

I want to see the receipts for Rainbow's 10 million worldwide. Between the USA, Europe and Japan, it's around 6.5m or so- so, 8.5m-9m more logical. That extra million seems like it was just tacked on. And I'm not questioning it because it's one of my least favorite Mimi albums, jut that the numbers don't add up. Emancipation of Mimi is 9m-10m, after all- no matter that overall album sales were higher in 1999/2000.

The album is under-certified in the U.S. so maybe they were adding in those sales.

^Even accounting for that, too high. It's possible the singles sales were added in- I don't think they were that high outside the USA.

Love Rainbow. "Heartbreaker" is still one of my favorite Mariah songs (both versions). X-Girlfriend is SO underrated!

LOL! Cute.
Anyhow, on Rainbow, "Petals" is a good track. "Heartbreaker" is catchy, but maybe would have been better without those whispery verses. Wasn't too crazy about much of the rest of it.

Ok, she needs to leak like a 30 second clip to build up some hype!

Rainbow comes across really rushed to me, it's not even close to being one of my favorite Mariah albums, but I do enjoy "Petals" "Heartbreaker" (original and remix) and "Bliss."

I know many will disagree, but there was a quality in Mariah's voice during the Rainbow era that really like, particularly in songs like Crybaby. I know many consider it the point where her voice started to deteriorate, but I liked it

^Even accounting for that, too high. It's possible the singles sales were added in- I don't think they were that high outside the USA. Well, if you say it's at 4 million in the U.S. that's nearly halfway there. It was pretty big in Brazil. I think it could be at like 5-6 million total just from the Americas. It's over 1 million in Europe. I think it's over 1 million in Japan, right? That means it could be at 2 million for Asia. That would put it at 9 million total, but you never know if it's, say, 4.4 million in the U.S., 1.3 million in Europe, and then 2.2 million in Asia, etc. By the time it's all added it could be at 10 million total.

It would help if while she was being talked about she released a snippet of the song to get people really talking. Apparently, she is doing a Q&A session at 11AM the day of the release.
The one thing I will give Mariah credit for concerning Rainbow is it was the last time she really put in a concerted effort with her remixes. All of her remixes since then have been very hit or miss. I wanted to beat her @ss for that atrocity of an urban remix for #Beautiful.

Speaking of Rainbow, I just did this track-by-track review for another site so I will post it here:
1. "Heartbreaker" - Yeah, this is basically just a fusion of "Fantasy" (the bassline) and "Dreamlover" (part of the melody) in specific parts and overall feel. That doesn't mean it isn't good, though. Most of us can relate to the lyric, and it's a catchy ass song (particularly the b-section). I also love how Jay'z rap is a [comical] counterpoint to Mariah's parts.
2. "Can't Take That Away" - It's a bit of a "Hero" redux thematically, but it's more passionately sung. I like the strings but wish a true piano had been used. The melody is nice, too. I can't say too much negative about it, but for some reason it just isn't something I love. Maybe I can't separate the song from the terrible video.
3. "Bliss" - My appreciation for this one has grown over the years. It's definitely the type of song I associate with Janet Jackson. I love the way the whistle notes are used; they make sense. I also love the bridge and especially the "Just drinking you in..." section.
4. "How Much" - The production is very of its time, which isn't to say it's bad. The song itself is pretty catchy. I wish it had been a true duet, though.
5. "After Tonight" - This should have been a nice track; Mariah's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" or something. Instead it's just sort of a mess. I think it's partly the Capri studio, partly poor mixing, and partly Mariah's voice not being as strong as it had been. It doesn't help that it's a clear "My All" redux, but if it had been recorded well I don't think we'd care as much.
6. "X-Girlfriend" - This might be the most obvious example of Mariah chasing a trend in her entire catalog. It's still catchy enough, though, and thematically isn't something she had done before (and that you don't hear a ton in song in general).
7. "Heartbreaker Remix" - The use of "Ain't No Fun" was genius, and I love Mariah using that melody. There's a bit too much rap for me, though. One of the two could have been left off (Da Brat for my money).
8. "Vulnerability" - I find this to be a random interlude in that I don't see how going from the "HB" remix to this is any less jarring than if it had gone straight to "AAO," but it's still nice.
9. "Against All Odds" - Something about the production is a little tinny/cheap for me, and Mariah's vocal sounds distant (as in away from the mic) in parts. This is a track that would definitely benefit from a remastering. With that being said, though, this is a really immediate vocal from Mariah; you can tell she was feeling the emotion presented.
10. "Crybaby" - Legit classic. This is like an extended "We Belong Together" before that song existed. I love that it's hip-hop, but it also somehow feels a bit jazzy. Like with Jay-Z on "Heartbreaker," I love that the rap provides a lyrical counterpoint to Mariah; in other words, there is an actual point to having a rap verse. Mariah's lyric here is great, and I am still shocked she recorded a song about being with Luis but thinking about Derek. Do you think Luis asked her about it? The ad-libs will go down in history.
11. "Did I Do That?" - I like the lyrics, and the production is ok overall (especially that menacing keyboard line), but Mystikal's shouting really grates on my nerves to where I can barely listen. I do find it odd she has interludes on the album but didn't see a need to use one in going from this one to...
12. "Petals" - This is easily one of the more moving songs in Mariah's catalog. The lyrics are obviously personal (and very detailed). The line that gets me the most is, "Although that knife was chipping away at me they turned their eyes away and went home to sleep." For the most part the production gets out of the way, but I do think it might be improved with a remastering. I'd love to hear those strings a bit more. In general this reminds of a really good family saga novel; those usually reveal dark secrets in a fairly straight-forward manner.
13. "Rainbow Interlude" - This is one of the best interludes I have heard from any artist. It provides a true transition between two songs, both musically and lyrically. I sometimes wish this was a full song, but it works so perfectly as an interlude that anything else might ruin it.
14. "Thank God I Found You" - The lyric is corny, sure, but I like the rest of it. The production reminds me of Boyz II Men's "On Bended Knee." Speaking of them, the harmonies on this one are better than those on "One Sweet Day." Most of all, though, I love the melody of this song. I'm surprised so many of you prefer the Stargate remix because I think that one is even cheesier than the album version. I wonder if she even remembers they did a remix of the song?
I disagree that this is modeled after previous albums. Well, certain songs are clearly modeled after past ones (like "After Tonight" being like "My All"), but I think the more general concept was making an album that was very of-the-moment. That's why Rainbow hasn't aged as well as Daydream and Butterfly(well, that and the terrible sound quality). To that end I consider this album and E=MC2 sisters.

Mariah to be on Jimmy Fallon 11/12!
Jimmy Fallon will only work in terms of promoting the song if she sings it LIVE. To just go on and talk about her shoulder or kids will do nothing. I remember when she was on Live with Kelly and Michael during after Almost Home was released and she talked about it for one second like she was embarrassed by/avoiding the song itself.
We can really help on 11/11 by sharing the song and updating our statues with pictures. Changing cover photo's and profile pics the night before will help too. If it's a HUGE success then I'm sure they will be discussing it on Fallon. Let's make it happen!

That doesn't mean shit. Look at "Perfume." I'm looking forward to the song, but have zero expectations in terms of its success. If it's really good, maybe the public will give it a chance.

American Idol helped to increase the probability that radio would jump on "#Beautiful," but I don't feel like the general (pop music listening) public or PDs are hyped about a new Mariah Carey single. The song is really going to have to sell itself.
