Let's also keep in mind that Mariah Carey is not a pop act which is forgotten due to her history and name. She isn't catering to the biggest radio format with generic pop records or dance crap and well we all know that format is crucial to itune sales. A major reason we go round and round in circles in this thread and all Mariah threads is that her pop fans don't understand how urban artists should be judged in terms of commercial success viability. I also think Black radio/Urban in my opinion has more respect and loyalty to their legends than pop radio and that's where Mariah's only concern should be. I will also say she is far more respected and revered in black homes vs white homes at this stage.

christina perri @christinaperri 24h o holy night by Mariah Carey is quite possibly my #1 favorite vocal performance in any song of all time. I can't argue with that. Mariah's classic take on 'O Holy Night' is a revelation...it's heavenly...a masterpiece...etc.etc. Her version it's simply divine.

I get chills almost every time I listen to her "O Holy Night," especially on the very first "Fall on your knees" and then on the perfectly placed whistle note.
Coco - I see your point in that R&B music doesn't sell downloads as well, but Mariah also needs to recognize that urban radio doesn't exactly support her. It's not like "Triumphant" or "#Beautiful" had great R&B airplay. Even the E=MC2 and Memoirs singles pretty much tanked at urban radio. I actually think she'd do better catering to pop audiences because ultimately people love to hear her on a good pop melody. All of her biggest songs have great melodies.

Mariah would do best catering to Urban AC audiences with her new material, but new material doesn't matter when you're a legend.

Mariah's version of O Holy Night is just simply the best, imo...the low notes, the belting and the whistle notes are just amazing.

Mariah would do best catering to Urban AC audiences with her new material, but new material doesn't matter when you're a legend. Um, you are right but the problem is Mariah seems very into eternal youth and trying to remain relevant on r&b and not urban ac. I just hope she doesn't employ rent a rappers because I really want some true r&b gems from her new era. I hope she ends up catering to r&b and urban AC. Pop didn't do it's job with that last release she had. It's a wrap on that end. Mariah's version of O Holy Night is just simply the best, imo...the low notes, the belting and the whistle notes are just amazing. DIVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE, if you don't get goosebumps at that then you are not human. Mariah singing the word divine makes you feel so divine :'( :'( :'(

I don't think it is a case of radio not wanting to play Mariah. I think they would be more than willing to play her maybe not in a we will give you a smash capacity, but on a decent radio play level. I think the problem is the inconsistent material. The last two albums she had a decent 1st single for radio and then followed it up with a garbage second single when there were better choices for singles. Rather than save face and put out a better song immediately, she kept with the uninteresting Bye, Bye(one of her tackiest and worst songs ever) and I Want To Know What Love Is. Now she is plagued with false album starts. Triumphant was not a good song in the sense that she was marketing as her song and she really was just the hook and bridge ho on that one. Almost Home was a nice song to reintroduce Mariah to people, and she should have put a bit more effort into it as that was a nice song for rebuilding her public image. Beautiful was a great song, but was plagued with terrible live performances, a meh video and horrible remix. I think she could do well again, but she has to be roped in by someone to stop these random momentum killers from happening. You would think that someone from her record company/management team could see the pattern she has developed.

"#Beautiful" did decently, though. If she puts out a single that performs at that level, that would be a win for her at this point.

Oh I agree performing on a Beautiful level is totally doable for her at this point. It would have been interesting to see had she delivered a better video, performances and remix if it could have performed batter than it did, but we will never know. She just has to be very solid in what she puts out. I hope the video she delivers actually has something different to it rather than just staring at her. Throw us a slight plot this time.

The only thing about it is that when you're a legend it gets harder to break new music (even if it's phenomenal) because people are always on your older material. She's in good company though (Stevie, Aretha, Patti, Chaka, etc...)

Nick said Mariah's going to "reveal something else to the world" after the single release. I wonder if he's talking about the album or something else.

Mariah will be appearing on Michael Buble's new holiday special. I have to assume they will do "AIWFCIY" since he covered it for his album.
It's crazy he's getting another special for it. He is really selling that thing. What are the total sales now?

(even before I hear it)

I hope she promotes this album as much as she promotes the holiday of Christmas and AIWFCIY.

She's probably releasing the #Beautiful remix video or something not that exciting. On that note, she fucking trolled us with that clip of the #Beautiful dance remix with resung vocals. Who does that?

Ya'll need to cool it with the subtle shade.
Anyway, now that I thought about it I think it could be a world tour? "Reveal something to the whole world" We'll soon find out I guess.
Also, Mariah looks so pretty n young on those vids she posted on Instagram with Jermaine.

I'll never get over how the entertainment industry gets away with discriminating against those they consider "older". Radio does this blatantly and get away with it. You can get over it easily if you look at it the other way: why should anyone be successful, score hits, airplay and of course money with it until the end of time or as long as s/he keeps recording? If the "people" let that then there weren't new acts breaking new ground. But it doesn't work like that because people get bored of stuff, look for "the new". Of course that can be controlled by the media but they cater to the majority and not to those people who stick by their favs for decades. It's silly to act like this is some kinda conspiracy against 40+ year olds because in the end you're just upset that said artist is no longer making the same amount of money as before. Harsh but true... So it's ok to go up to Bill Gates and make him retire cause he's made billions and he's old... Give me a break.. It's wrong what the entertainment industry allows in terms of ageism and as long as there are complacent people accepting it then it will continue.

We're talking about pop music. Pop music is heavily image based. Mariah's brand is herself.
